Mods feel free to delete or move thread if appropriate. I just noted that the AFL was proposing to change the structure of the draft to one of the following:

  • OPTION 1
    Picks 1-10 in usual order.
    Picks 11-22 alternate between top-eight teams and bottom 10 teams. (pick 11 = 8th place. Pick 12 = 18th)
Picks 23-26 go to teams who finished 12th, 11th, 10th, ninth.
Picks 27-28 go to the grand finalists. This order continues for the rest of the draft.Picks 21-28 go to the finalists. Order remains the same for the remainder of draft.
  • OPTION 2
    Picks 1-10 in usual order.
Picks 11-20 go to non-finalists in reverse ladder order again.
On the one hand it is true that it can be hard to rebuild with only one high pick each year, so if you bugger it up (like St Kilda) you're in trouble. Although this seems too much distinction between draft concessions for teams when there may be very little difference between them. E.g. from option 2 if you finish ninth you get picks 10 and 11 whereas only 1 spot higher gets 21 and that's pretty much it. Similar in option 1 the preliminary finalists get picks 19 and 21, whereas a losing grand finalist (only 1 game better) has to wait until 27. On balance not against looking into some reform though. Thoughts?

Just stop AFL. They’re has to be bad sides deal with it.

Besides blues have had 7 top 20 picks in last 3 drafts, it hasn’t helped

Only a matter of time before they **** the game completely. They genuinely have no idea and it is a complete embarrassment that our countries most recognised sport is being administrated the way that is compared to other countries and the sports they are renowned for. I mean who the **** gets paid to come up with shit concepts like the ones listed in that article.

The problem and solution to the problem is so simple yet they aren't willing to recognise their mistakes and address the issue. That being that Aussie rules isn't big enough in Queensland and NSW to have two teams in either state and by having 18 clubs instead of 16 the talent pool is too stretched out.

Gee I can see Eddie loving these changes with the Pies possibly finishing 2nd/3rd this year. ALF ignores Richmond, they wont ignore Ed, this wont happen

I'd say leave the draft alone as is. Carlton are only poor because they have a lot of young players with little experience. They are poor now but have a lot of upside. Adding another kid without experience isn't going to help. I kind of like the idea of rather than giving additional draft picks as compo, the AFL allows the club to pick up a player they'd like in the state leagues. That way the club would get something to actually help them in the short term and the draft won't be as compromised.

AFL has no idea.
Removing picks for the top eight clubs from the top 20 in the draft will only force them to go harder at free agents instead.

What we will see is the poorer and lesser known clubs developing young talent and the bigger clubs taking them away via free agency several years later.

Seriously when a side gives up pick 2 for a bloke like Weller then they deserve no assistance.
The other side has 20 yes 20 1st rnd draftees in their squad.
While the reigning Premier has 13.
Hocking should look abit deeper than just handing out draft picks willy nilly.

Maybe its coincidental but all these proposed changes to the game seemed to surface following the Tigers getting to the top of the heap....just sayin.
This one won't be implemented until the end of 2020 at the earliest. Who knows how well we are going at that time or soon after. We still may be dominant or we could be struggling as Rance, Riewoldt, Dusty, Cotchin etc will be in the twilight of their careers.

That first option is almost as absurd as the AFL's initial move recently to play a select amount of games under completely different rules this year ! The insanity of that got shut down thankfully, but this sort of thing from the AFL is beginning to repeat itself.

McLachan and Hocking are lunatics. They've gone totally off tap, and as I've said before, are a genuine threat to the future of the game.

That would be too funny. All these changes the afl wants to make just make us the most dominant club in the history of the comp

Agree. I know it's a small thing but that social justice warrior cuck Gil showed his hand when he changed the AFL's logo for a political message "Yes" when the vote was happening for gay marriage. (I voted yes but beside the points). These extreme leftists are dangerous. Every time a governing body tries this crap it ends in genocide/death. It's so arrogant and ignorant of the current administration. We saw exactly what happens when you shame the producers like Richmond to put the parasites like Carlton/Footscray on the Friday night games. Ratings dropped hard and fast...but instead of realising the mistake they had made they pretended it was teams like Richmonds fault for playing pressure football and "congestion".

You know what Gil. Richmond being crap for 37 years was great for the game, and great for us. It doesn't always feel that way but if we prop everyone up and simply rotate through premierships every 18 years and hold hands at our "even" uninteresting sterile comp the game will have been ruined and the game will be meaningless. There's already enough there for clubs. It's enough. Please leave it.
