Make no mistake, this was an ill-conceived, politically motivated, vote-grabbing policy made in haste and without proper consultation. It also appears to be working.

"PSOs earn up to $55,000, usually work close to home, finish with the last train and some work 10-hour, four-day shifts. They also receive nine weeks of annual leave."

Nine weeks annual leave, four-day working weeks, patrolling stations near home, asking punks to move along?

I'd almost be tempted to move back to that overgrown (and getting worse) shit-hole of a city for dem kindsa benefits.

I'd be interested to find out whether "privatising" the public transport system has actually cost us more than if we, the people, still owned it. Some kind of calculation looking at increased costs, government spending, subsidised losses etc. Anyone got any idea where we could find that info out?
Fares only count towards ~1/8 of the revenue required to run the public transport system. I believe there has been modelling in many cities that indicates free public transport in metropolitan areas is actually a cheaper option than requiring fares (and the associated fare infrastruture) when total effect on human movement during peak times is considered.

It would be interesting to read a similar study if one was ever completed on such a car-dependant city such a Melbourne

Wow, so many bullshit stories about how people who rarely catch PT, and who just happen to post on bigfooty have had run ins with.

Who would have thought.

Work in Melbourne everyday for the last 13 years and can count on one hand the amount of times I've seen a cop issue a J-Walking fine.

i know 3 blokes that got fined for j walking. that's just the one's that bothered to bring it up in conversation. my old house mate got done for crossing the bourke street tram lines at 3am.

the PSO's are a joke. why the **** have they got guns? a few months training and lets load them up.

You're prepared to hide your corporate whoredom statist bullshit under that crap?

I think the answer to that is pretty obvious

I honestly wish you and your type would just **** off to some penal colony and leave the rest of us alone to continue evolving.

You can picture pottsie at a bbq - 'well i hope this is a council permitted party, and that all the neighbours were appropriately informed and only people who pay taxes were invited'.... sounds like a right laugh

According to BF expecting people to pay of a user pays system is bad.

FIGHT DA POWA.

You would have made an excellent capo at Auschwitz.

Why exactly are they bullshit?

You cannot simply discount the personal experience of others because it does not fit with your preconceived world view. That kind of willful and aggressive self delusion is dangerous.

How many flights on Qantas have you done since Emirates and Qantas tied their services together again?

Anyone has a legit question ask me. Don't make shit up for your own self benefit

No worries
So what position are you coming from in wanting to answer people's 'legit questions'?

Just a frequent user of public transport? I don't quite understand where you are coming from then

it is/they are the questions one asks when jackboot on throat and under yoke of the man - Hard to Beat

Interesting that this thread just got bumped last night -

Only just before I was on the train and I was approached by two actual police officers checking tickets. I was a little surprised that state funded officers would otherwise be doing a private job. I asked them if they were real police - The guy looked a little bemused and pointed to his uniform. I then asked him why the state was paying the wages of someone who was otherwise ensuring the collection of private profits... The woman just said "We're traffic police" and the guy chimed in with "We're just making sure the law isn't being broken"

- I certainly wasn't in the mood for an argument, but what a joke - It's bad enough that my taxes go to their wages, but their wages are being used for ensuring a private company's revenue....
