No they don't.

They could attempt to detain you, as per the same laws that apply to other private citizens if you commit an offence (e.g. assault, vandalism, causing a public disturbance), however current operating procedure is that they are not to detain passengers, nor pursue fleeing passengers involving disputes over ticketing.

This is coming from someone (not me), who worked for Metro and now a security contractor who does the security at most of the railyards and upgrade sites in Vic.

This. One guy tried to take on four chroming maoris or islanders at Strathmore station when they got on the train by punching back at one of them. Guy just laughed and sprayed the metro officer in the face with his can after punching him. The fact that the thing was on video and would be bought before the court or required to do so if it went to that stage would not have looked good when the metro ao has clearly gone at them in a vigilante/fighting thug way and has had the subsequent reaction to his attack from the maoris.

I've seen some of the male pso's in action, and they come across extremely aggressive, looking at ways to provoke ,rather than trying to remedy the situation, might be time for all female pso's who can be more conciliatory

PSO is for Protective Services Officer....No?

I assume protective service officers is there full title, I could be wrong, but they don't come across as very protective,

Where do you catch the train from/to? What times? How often ?

I've seen none of this behavior.

$3 * how many attempts.

Are they acceptable outcomes ... no, but 100% avoidable by the "victims" in question.

Is it? Have seen metro officers grab and headlock a guy from behind for not listening to them (he had headphones on ffs ) in regards to wanting his concession card which resulted in him flipping the guy because he thought he was getting robbed. How is that avoidable when the dufus uses no common sense in the first place?

Yes, the 2 incidents in question were 100% avoidable by the "victims". I can't speak for your one, but I must be travelling at the wrong times on the wrong lines considering how many incidents you guys have.

stop whining. if it was assault, then their is already a redress for this through the courts.

the security guards are likely to be pretty big and dumb. so mistake will happen.

what is important is they receive better training and supervision.

Welcome to the fine state.

Theyre talking about on the spot fines for kids taking a day off school now

That'll be a revenue raiser within 6 months of starting

Excellent idea!

Not sure what you mean, therell be no point fining the target people, theyll just ignore it anyway

Just end up as another bloated beaurocracy nitpicking and wasting teachers time

It would work for some, and even if it deters just 10% of the waggers, that's a good result.

Anyway, I don't care if it raises revenue alongside being a deterrent. Most of the money goes back into doing good things for society like health, education, transport etc.

Etc = employing beaurocrats and parking inspectors with quotas

I dont know what social paradise you think you are living in, I'm sick of it

You know they have entire departments in government and other areas. Phone companies, banks etc just dreaming up ways to fleece ordinary people living thisr lives quietly

The anti social people we are told the fines are supposed to correct couldnt give two ****es and if they were to pay a finr, they probably rob someone to paythem

Rant over

Just caught public transport in Singapore. Clean, cheap and good. No guards.......but no turkeys either.

May be we, in Australia, just need dress standards, sobriety tests, clean hair, no visible tattoos and compulsory national service.

Don't even get me started about the conservative utopia... I lived there for 10 years and it's a devoid of personal expression, free speech. They (as a collective) have small man syndrome.
