Not saying it was a great pitch, but I am disappointed that the venue's going to be punished for it. For all the complaints it played okay and plenty of wickets fell to pace. Feels like a decision like this will just encourage curators to be conservative and turn out roads.

If they are going to penalise venues for pitches like this, it would be nice if they also gave some more attention to the last dot point.

I thought they may have rated the Indian Cricket Team POOR as well....

Smith showed how to play in the dicey conditions. Pretty disappointing to see India just chuck it away in the 2nd innings, piss poor effort.

Smith played Ashwin diligently and attacked the occasional loose Jadeja delivery.

The pitch wasn't great, but you'd think the team losing 20/212 would the Aussies, not the Indians.

Scoring 540 on that shit heap was a mighty effort.

If a team scores 260 in the first innings, how can a wicket be that poor? This sounds like a political decision.

i don't think the chances take away from what a great innings it was, faf was dropped i think 4 times in his epic adelaide knock but most agree it was still a very special innings.
Of course. Great innings. But somewhat of a stretch to use that innings to say that the pitch was alright if he could have been out 5 times on it.

It wasn't an easy pitch and you don't want every wicket like that but players with a solid defense and sensible plans on how to score were still a big factor in the game, until they got out both renshaw and rahul looked flawless in their 60+ scores.

So how did "poor" Pune compare with, say, passable Trent Bridge? "Balanced contest"? Both matches were dominated by bowlers, but in each, the best batsman in the world found a way to make a hundred. "All the individual skills"? In Pune, much was made of the fact that spinners opened the bowling for both sides, and seamers were marginalised. But seamers did bowl 59 overs, and take nine wickets. At Trent Bridge, spinners bowled a total of 16 overs, for not one wicket.

Danger? Getting out always hurts, but Trent Bridge was more dangerous to health and wellbeing by far.

Not assessed by the ICC, but important surely: was it entertaining? To us, Pune was. So, in a macabre way, was (ahem) Trent Bridge. We can admit that now.

Good article.

Its all good....

I hear that the BCCI have just appointed a Mr. Sepp Blatter as their new head of pitch control....

Genuine question, not trying to needle you or anything.

Forgetting which teams were involved etc, do you believe there is a difference in a raging turner and a green top if one is producing similar scores to the other?

Not surprised, India outsmarted themselves with that wicket

I felt at the start of the test that the pressure they were feeling to make sure they really thumped us 4-0 might have had a bit to do with this track, before the start of the series even one high scoring draw would have been seen as a disappointing result that was just the reality of how lowly we are rated by everybody in these conditions.

With england being rated higher than us on these tracks the series win by any margin was all that mattered so the tracks that really suit india(fairly flat but also low and slow) were the ones they went for.

Quite clearly. Green tops dry out and become lifeless after 1-2 days. Raging turners keep getting worse as the days wear on.

Also as for comparing Trent Bridge.. that wasn't really a green top, that was just shit batting.

??? Except when they don't, and the test is over before they dry out and become roads.

They rated them poorly when South Africa toured there 2 years ago. Means jack shit. Though it's funny when it back fires on a team happened to Australia quite a few times

That was the one example I can find where it was a bit beyond a joke - even Dean Elgar (seriously) was causing problems for batsmen.

Except 90% of the time they do.

And 90 per cent of the time spinning decks don't lead to an average innings score below 200. That's the point, no one is comparing this pitch to one that 'does a bit on day one.' They're comparing it to the green wickets that see matches finish inside 3 days.

Spinning from day one it does.

Rubbish. The pitches in the England series spun from day one. They fostered some big scores.
Spinning like it did in Pune. Happy? You're the only one defending a rubbish pitch. Are you indian?
