Purple Army Membership Q 2014

When did the Grand Final upgrade actually come in? I moved to Kalgoorlie for work halfway through 2006 and planned to just jump in the car a drive with my flatmate across if we got through.. But a couple of years later I only then heard a poster say that the club would've made a heap on a GF upgrade thing at the time late in the season, I swear the club never contacted me about it..

Do you believe the same should apply to all members in regards to seating at the ground if there becomes a waiting list for members??

Im not sure what you mean by that.

If you're asking if 'first on the list get seats' then I would say yes but its not the same situation here. Somebody has decided, post event, that people who took the GF upgrade on 2013 get first preference forever more. I don't see a logical argument for this over some of the alternatives. Its terrific for those who picked yes in 2013, no argument there but not so good for other long standing members who didn't happen to say yes that year.

If the decision was to provide to members on a 'length of membership basis' then I could see a better logic behind that system. I could see a better logic behind a ballot system of members who want to apply for it. I see either of those two alternatives as being providing a better and fairer outcome but I'm sure others will have their own opinions about that.

Whatever method is chosen, with the AFL providing insufficient numbers of seats then people will miss out. I don't see any need to boost some clubs coffers by giving them equal seat allocations to the clubs who are actually in the GF so they can sell them as inflated cost package deals but again thats my opinion.

Quick question for those with renewals sitting in their letterboxes about now.

Number two son is a purple army junior member and part of being a purple army member is being able to buy tickets to away games or finals using the barcode right? Problem is the card sent out has no barcode on it unlike mine and No1 son (seated members). Is this a one off mistake or are others in the same boat?

I actually used the barcode this year for the first time to get another ticket for the Sydney Final, never used it before that.

Also as an aside I have not been able to get another GF upgrade added on to Number 2 son membership. Only available if you already had it this year perhaps.

No barcode on mine (Purple Army) but I'm still planning to test the membership out at some away games next year, particularly Sydney/Canberra. Didn't manage it this year. As noted above, the GF upgrade is going to be a vexed issue!

I can see your point but every club has advantages and those who got in first and paid through the past few years deserve to keep their spot, like the people who have paid for their seats over the past few years deserve first right of refusal on the seats they have.

I do agree that the allocation to club members should be increased and the hypocrisy of the AFL talking about integrity and then scalping packages to AFL fans is a disgrace...

Any of you lotharios out there care to pen something to Steve... maybe a petition perhaps? Seppo? Esti?

I'm one of the privileged 6000 so the plight of the commoners doesn't concern me. ;)

But seriously, I only bought the upgrade for the first time last year so I don't have much moral high ground to stand on, but those who've been paying for years would have every right to feel aggrieved if it was taken off them just because other members have suddenly decided they want them now we're looking like being successful.

I empathise with those stuck on the waiting list, but at the end of the day the harsh truth is they've only got themselves to blame. Upgrades were still available halfway through last season when it was already obvious we were going to have a good year.

I'm sure none of us would like it if our memberships were stripped off us to be given to new members, and I don't see much difference between that and stripping a GF upgrade off a long time subscriber to give to someone who has never bothered to pay for it but suddenly thinks they deserve it. Doing that would be more unfair than the alternative imo.

At least there's always the ballot to give everyone else a chance.

Thanks for replies discussion did get sidetracked a bit about GF upgrade though, obviously a bit emotive.

Can any 'Purple Army' non-seated membership people advise me if they have a barcode on their tickets or not. Cannot see how you can get priority access to buy finals tickets without this which is meant to be part of the deal of being a 'Purple Army'member.

Same mine has no barcode. Interesting

Cheers. Given buying the tickets through ticketmaster/Ticketek usually involves use of a barcode I am not sure how this is going to work. Might have to contact the club and see what the deal is.

be curious to see what the club says...I really wish they did away with the barcode system

Email sent. I'll let you know what they say. So so many people missed out on finals tickets that it would not surprise me if they took that option off us !! Would suck but would not surprise me. They will say you didn't buy a seat so why should you get one for the finals.

However I have a GF upgrade, so how will that work if we made the GF with registration.

Interested to see their response.

FreoGirl yours has a barcode right ?

You don't appear to understand how the grand final upgrade works at all. It's an add-on to your membership, and once you choose it, you have the right to keep renewing your membership with the add-on, the same way any other membership is renewed. You saying it's not fair that I get to keep the option is like me suggesting it's not fair then you get to keep the same seat each year.

It's pretty lame though if some bandwagoner that just just joined up in the last year or 2 gets guaranteed to keep it.

Not that it bothers me after giving up my membership a few years after moving away from Perth. I guess if ever come back the only seat I could get is next to a concrete pole or something lol, annoying when I where a member for years, most of which when we were shit.

Got my pack in the mail. I didn't even get a card lol. Email from me will be coming soon Freo!

I have relinquished 3 GF upgrades.

I think quite a few will now that the novelty of witnessing Freo's first GF has passed.

I originally wasn't going to renew either but my brother is dead keen to saddle up again.

How bout the First Premiership?

Dont know if I could handle that in person without acting like a frigging fool after the siren :D

PS Better throw some salt over my shoulder...

Yeah I think I'll continue to buy it now until we either win a flag or I go broke.

Being able to celebrate a premiership after the game out on the town in Melbourne would be the ultimate.

And also because I don't want my only memory of a live Freo GF to be one of heartache. It was a seriously depressing plane ride home with so many sad looking Freo supporters.

Yea, unbelievable, mind you I'd be a emotional wreck in my seat.

Thats not what I said. Perhaps you should read my post.

I said it wasn't logical to suddenly make an arbitrary decision to decide after the event that those who took the upgrade this year will suddenly remain at the top of the queue for the upgrade every year. Clearly you have a different view but I suspect if you had decided not to take the upgrade this for whatever reason you wouldn't be so keen for this choice.

However, its fallen in your favour so enjoy it.

The example you fired off about the seats is absurd though

Was it an arbitrary decision or have renewing upgrade holders always had priority and it's just never been tested before?

I imagine if 10,000 people had tried to buy them as soon as they heard the news of us signing RTB they would have given priority to existing holders.
