With Adam Simpson a first time senior coach, I thought the BF brains trust should get together and figure out what mandate to give the coach.

Plan for future? Accept that we have major deficiencies and bottom out for a season or two by giving key responsibilities to players who are the future, and pushing out Cox, Glass, Waters, Kerr, Priddis.
Pros: Early draft picks = guaranteed superstars (right?)
Bottoming out is a proven formula for success (see Carlton & Melbourne as undeniable evidence)
Cons: Losing is no fun.
Pointless if we continue making blunders in the draft

Or

Push for flag with the players we have.
Pros: Keep up our winning culture!
Priddis deserves a flag
We have some real talent on the list, we can certainly make finals
Cons: Probably don't have the squad to pull off a top 4 finish
Rely on a lot of players having career best seasons
Waste 2-3 years before we realise we can't do it and bottom out anyway.

Not sure which option I prefer.

Not sure you can do both, not how the AFL is currently structured. You can get lucky and pick up a Fyfe, Shuey or Darling later in the draft, but typically it's a numbers game. Early picks increase chances of picking up a star. Lots of early picks increase chances of building a premiership team.

If Simpson thinks we're a flag chance, he needs to be aggressive at the trade table. Put up pick 6, chase players wanting a move (Savage, Shaw, Thomas), etc.
If he wants to build for the future, he needs to do the opposite. Trade players surplus to needs (Brennan, Wilson, Smith, Rosa) to upgrade picks, maybe even offer something worth a pick inside the top 100 (Hurn back to SA? Schofield back to Vic?).

Free Agency and more open trade tables will allow for teams to do both. BTW Sydney are laughing at you.

How do you explain the success of Geelong, Sydney and Collingwood?

I think Simpson will get a decent look at the list over the season, that's the first step, ultimately then it's his direction.

Soft draw next year, better run with injuries and a new gameplan, surely we make the eight.
I'll be betting on it :thumbsu:

Geelong benefited from the father son rule. Did brilliant to stay at the top for 6-7 years, but one look at their delistings this year shows that they are looking to rebuild.

Pies, if you remember, also bottomed out after playing off in 2 grand finals a decade ago and benefited with some brilliant pick ups (Pendles & Thomas), but their success is built around a brilliant midfield of relatively early picks, FS forward (Cloke) and FS defender (Shaw).

Sydney seems to be the exception to the rule. Don't know what their secret is.
