(sim development) Qooty - The application, now available

Ok a couple of folks have asked me if I could send them the program that I use to run the fake footy.

I'm glad to see that I have now created a sendable copy (zipped). It doesn't take a lot of room, probably about half a meg when full of leagues and stuff. It also runs ok, though there are some points to make clear.

You need to have QBasic on your computer, and your computer needs to KNOW that QBasic exists. You can download it off the net for nix, though I'm not sure about telling your PC it exists, it was probably in the 'Paths'.

The game is far from faultless. Some things break it, eg pressing enter to play a game when a league has been chosen which doesn't have any teams in it. Try not to make the game do things which make it wonder what the hell you're asking. If the blue screen comes up, hold down Alt while pressing 'F', then let go of alt and press 'E', that quits from the application and starts it again.

About once every 100 goes, a match decides that one of its quarters will be endless. If you see the time go into negative figures, hold down ctrl and press Pause/Break, then quit it as explained above, and try again.

As we've seen, sometimes the stats are a bit hard to comprehend.

There's no real graphics, its a boring text-based spectator-sport.

The 'Voice-com' won't work, it was based on a VERY outdated synthesiser. Even if it did, it slows the game down, as can the 'print-out' option in gameplay (see the setup screen)

Cursor movement is navigated using the numeric keyboard, with NUMLOCK ON!

The game might run too fast or two slow, depending on your computer. If so, get my attention and I'll send a fixed 'game.bas' file, with a changed line to hopefully fix that.

That's most of the faults. Here's the plug for the decent parts :
* You can make and play as many leagues as you want.
* You can swap players, even between leagues.
* The latest played game can be viewed in a graph format, score by score. Game archives can also be graphed, but I'd need to explain a manual thing to do in this case.
* There is a best and fairest count option available.
* All game stats can be saved, also highest scores, and ladders for all rounds. (There is an error in the ladders which can fixed manually, just ask me).
* Every stat can be listed in a 'top 20', 'top 40' or 'top 60' format.
* You can add, change, delete your own commentary, as long as you don't add more than there are available slots.
* Debuts and milestones are highlighted.
* You can see player scores for a match as the game plays (press Spacebar to toggle).

If anyone wants a copy, please let me know your eMail addy, or eMail me to request one.

Just remember, its a bit fiddly to get going for a start, it has a few faults, and it is not by any means a high-quality application.

Mind you, one bloke I sent it to reckoned it was one of the best things he'd ever run across, of course I was chuffed when I heard this!

Cheers,

Kev

PS : Yes, I will be your helpdesk for a while, until you've got it up and running.

I reckon this bloke was me!!! I love the program...altho you dont actually 'play' it, i find it more enjoyable than AFL 98 or AFL 99

A ********ty little virus was found in the game.

If you've received it from me via eMail, please dispose of it (you can just delete it, and then delete it from your recycledbin as well), and download it again from the site.

Alternatively, you can just go into the COMMENTS subfolder, and just delete TRAN.EXE.

TRAN.EXE is an obsolete file that used to offer voice synthesising of the comments, but doesn't work on the new PCs (it worked on old XTs and ATs).

It's the one with the virus. Delete it and the virus is gone.

I'm having a problem too
I press F5 to start the game...then i press something to continue and it says some main menu file is not found...or something

Ok.

I would be interesting to know how far into the game you got when this happened. That line is saying 'go to the menu part of the program'. When did it come up with this error?

For the other error, subscript out of range, I have an idea . it might have been that an attempt was made to play a game, PRIOR to entering any teams. The game is trying to show a list of leagues to choose from, or teams within a league, but none have been entered.
New teams are entered via :

choosing SETUP LEAGUE : MAKE LEAGUE,
(down on numeric keypad, make sure numlock is on),
pressing enter,
following the prompts to add a league.

then ...

choosing SETUP LEAGUE : MAKE LEAGUE, (as before),
choosing SETUP LEAGUE : ADD TEAM,
(right on numeric keypad),
following the prompts to add league.

I didn't know I had to use the numpad. I got into Make Knew league. I named It fully, pressed enter, gave it an abbrieviated name, pressed enter and then it went back into QBasic and highlighted the following saying path not found
60 OPEN "I" , #1, PATHS$ + "\DATA\LEAGUES.DAT"
