Opinion Qualifying Final Changes vs. Sydney

Griffin, Clarke and Sandilands will cripple us in wet conditions. Griffin has to be cover for Sandilands.

Once again Virgins are proving to be disappointing.

Surely there is a late change. I just cannot conceive how we are going to structure up with this line up, and how that possibly improves our chances of a win.

Sydney did it with Seaby in one of their first games with sub rule and it didn't work out well at all iirc.

Sitting through the first derby in 2012 was enough to convince me that the three ruckmen tactic doesn't work.

Griffin really is a surprise. Considering the wet weather I was even expecting Taberner only to stay in in because of Syxdney tall forward line, so we are able to move another a tallish player back...

If it is dry would not be suprised seeing one of the ruckmen as the loose man in defence. Not your usual attacking option but it always fills me with confidence when I see Sandi in particular back there clunking marks. The ground is quite narrow so could work us, especially given that Tippett and Buddy aren't the best set shots thus if they did get a lot of set shots, it would be from the pockets. Can we trust Griff and Zac to do the job in the ruck and up forward? I can only see us going in with all 3 of them if it is dry.

There's a lot of talk about the "Johnson role". Johnno takes one of two roles when the ball's coming in: spare man or third tall defender. When we have the ball he's a key handball or short kick target.

I'd say we're looking for Ibbo and Clarke to play these roles. I'd expect to see Ibbo on Goodes or Reid at different times; Clarke looking to get free in defence; Ibbo working to run & carry out of the backline.

My only problems with this setup are the usual: we've got two ruckmen who are best suited to playing first ruck. I'd expect Sandi and Griff to play close to 50:50 on huge ball and give Mike Pyke no rest.

And let's not forget that Sydney are fairly light on for key defenders after Richards. Sandi forward could give Ballas and Walters silver service.

2 Griffin has been named but will be omitted if Sandi is deemed right to go .
3 We will not play 3 ruckmen wet or dry ,one will be dropped for De Boer or Crozier as the Sub .
4. If its wet we will play De Boer because of his hard body in contests , Crozier if its dry for his Speed and evasion skills as well as his ability to kick goals.

Yep, the boys made a great point on the podcast; if the team was to go in as named who would you have as sub? Griffin? No. Tabbener? No. Ibbotson? No (we're short enough on defenders as it is). Neale or Barlow? No and NO! The only thing that makes sense is Griffin out DeBoer/Croz in as sub.
