I think it was Dal who used to cut his socks up, and sew just the top part with the sponsors onto the foot of his socks to make them shorter. Maybe he's spread that a bit at North.

I know in the past, players have cut their socks down to a shorter length. However, this means they've effectively removed the AFL logo, thus rendering them non-uniform socks.

I think it's a great idea. Gives the players a choice and still looks good. I have a few pairs of various player issue socks (Carlton/Nike, WC Syd/Puma, Collingwood/adidas) and the Puma ones are by far the best. They stay up easily but aren't too chunky if you have them down. The Nike ones are massive and bulky, they can easily be stretched to half way up my thigh (and I'm 6'2)...they're more like women's pantihose. However, I also own a pair of generic Nike soccer socks and they're more like Puma.

I remember about 10 years ago a group made ankle socks with AFL logos, Judd was one of many players was using them, once the AFL became aware they outlawed them.

Well, I guess they don't make two different types (retail and PI versions). The socks you can buy from most sports stores are the same as the players wear.

I have a few pairs of Michael Braun's match worn Eagles socks....including an OCHRE pair.

What? How cost ineffective. Clubs basically have like 30 jumpers and then the old firsts ones get used for the ressies. And basically there's a fair portion of changes every week, so why would you have tailored cuts?

Bring back the days of 1-3 being size small, and the next 24 numbers being XXL. And of course the six foot 15-year old gun takes the number 1 because he wants a tight fit...

Most clubs make players buy their own kits (at least in my experience), so having them fitted makes some sense.

Haha my last couple of weeks has gone like this:

Under 19's - Number 5, nice tight fit
Seniors - Number 49, XL covering my shorts

Always special pulling on a footy jumper to represent the club you love.

But seriously, I have fond memories of running around as a 5 year old in a woolen footy jumper which was massive on every Sunday morning.

I mean designing the logo and guernsey is fine, but what oval are you going to use? What league are you going to play in? Where are the players coming from? Who else do you have on board?

It is pretty hard to start a new team. I remember hearing something like only five new clubs have started in the last 10 years across Australia, which sounds incredible, but most of the time it makes sense: country town clubs are dying off or merging, city teams just introduce another grade.

My original league back in WA, a new side started in 2009. Maybe 2008. Anyway for about three years they exclusively had colts teams, then a ressies for a year or two, and I think in their three seasons as a league have only won a single game. It really is hard.

Good luck but ultimately it's a sterrrugle.

I don't mean to be negative here, but forming a football club from scratch is an outrageously ambitious idea.

You need lots and lots of people, thousands of dollars, clubrooms, an oval, council assistance, sponsors. It's massive.

You legitimately need to find ~50 odd players at the absolute bare minimum to have a first team and a reserves. That's 50 players who live locally and are willing to leave their existing club. That's not counting coaches, support staff, your committee etc etc etc.

My cricket club has been around for decades, and had a turnover of more than $60,000 last year, just to run the club for the year. A footy club would be more than that with all the extra people, and the startup costs in your first year would be massive. Where is that money coming from?

Starting your own footy club is really hard unless you already have a lot of this stuff worked out. Maybe you're a former AFL player who can draw on his name and footy connections to get the ball rolling. Maybe you're a member of a poorly run existing club and the discontent is enough that you can form a breakaway club.

But from scratch, without those things? Nope.


On the flip side, if your intention is more to brand a club, which i'm guessing it is given that the first question you asked was about uniforms, then find a club with shit uniforms and logo, play for them for a few seasons, get the club talking about how poor the branding is and propose a change. Getting a wholesale, complete new logo, colours and uniform will be difficult, because even if they are shit, people will be attached to them. That's how footy clubs work.

But that's your best bet.

Fizzler, best advice is go down to a existing local club and speak with the treasurer and see if you can build a relationship with thatclub.
