In the Adelaide v WC GF qualifier a West Coast player elbowed an Adelaide player in the head before the game started, can someone explain the tactics behind this?
AFL is the only football code in the world where the players fight before the game starts, why? Their discipline levels are extremely low. Why do they constantly push and shove, what can be gained from this stupid play?

Well firstly it was a forearm, secondly if you actually looked at it he meant to push McGregor in the chest but he ducked at the last minute and thirdly its mostly a case of "hey i'm not scared of you" "yeah? well i'm not scared of you either" it's the same reason Boxers go into press conferences saying how much they are going to beat their opponent by, it's all pyschological.

Can anyone explain while during a stoppage in play two RL players would push and shove each other then the captain of Australia grab a young opponent by the jumper a proceed to punch the living suitcase out of him?

What is the point of this stupid play?

There wasn't any, it was stupid and he admitted that. Gee you guys can find reasons to justify everything in AFL. Not an elbow but a forearm so that makes it OK, and why was it before the game STARTED. Admit it, AFL players have no discipline. Why do they have to prove their not scared of each other?? Go for the ball and show it.

They just size each other up with a bit of physical stuff but as said earlier it's as much psychological than anything else.
The game is about to start, they are pumped.

He has a point. All the 'show and bravado' of pre-game push and shove is realistically useless . A show of strength that doesn't really prove anything , show more discipline and keep your mind on the job.

But it looks good.

it would happin in NRL if the players line-up next to each other like in AFL, but you dont and thats why you dont see it happin in NRL.

Crap. They are very diciplined. How else would they become so fit and deadicate their whole life to playing football?

The only reason it does not happen in rubgy is because in your game, the teams line up on opposite ends of the field. If they lined up on each other in rugby, like AFL i garantee it would occur, prob worse than AFL.

There are not too many other physical and contact sports that you line up your opposition prior to beginning of play, hence the reason it does not occur to often in other sports.

You mean as opposed to smashing someone full force in the face multiple times during play?
As happens in Rugby League

Don't wish to comment on the Gordon Tallis incident? (see above)

Where did I say that makes it ok? I was just pointing out that it was a forearm and not an elbow.

Oh BTW, a forearm push to the chest (where it was intended to land use your brain and you can see that) sounds a lot less savage than an elbow to the chest.

AFL players maybe dedicated to fitness but when it comes to self control on the field they always carry on eg Barry Hall incident. As I said you guys can justify anything in AFL. League players are just as pumped up as AFL players but they are extremely disciplined they don't carry on they know they have a goal to reach and are completly focused on it they don't want to let their team mates down by doing stupid things. It's called controlled aggression otherwise they could easily get stuck into each other.

Gee, you make a great point, rugby players always control their aggression by jamming the fingers up the oppsotions ar$e!

Why the hell do people respond to posts like this? It’s obvious the thread starter is trolling.

FFS, its not players who lack discipline and self-control, tis the posters of Big Footy.

They also know they can thump the living daylights out of each other in a tackle as long as they dont lift their opponents legs above their head.

To say that this is unique to the AFL is completely incorrect.

There have been some very nasty incidents in the USA when opposing American football teams, both professional and college, have brawled during pregame warm ups.

Having said that though, the "test of strength" hippo bumpo that some AFL players engage in before the start of games is comical at best, and a complete waste of time and energy.
