Will Bond go head-to-head vs Charlie Cameron/Cam Rayner? Audition to play on the opposition's most dangerous medium/small forward

Still think there's a niche role there for him although it's more likely that he's just Max's understudy getting some minutes

B Worrell - Murray - Michalanney
HB Hinge - Keane - Nankervis

R O'Brien - Dawson - Rankine
C Cumming - Soligo - Sholl

HF Rachele - Fogarty - Neal-Bullen
F Walker - Thilthorpe - Keays

I Peatling - Draper - Curtin - Bond
S Pedlar

I think that's where I'm sitting for my round 1 side.

Really not sure about the 7th defensive spot. I think Cumming should play wing, and I'm not sure either Laird or Milera deserve a spot - well Laird definitely doesn't, Milera probably not. So maybe Bond?

Agree. But do you think Nicksy has the balls to drop Laird R1?? Would rather Bond as well and Hinge is a far better kick than Laird. Would rather a utility as the sub like Dowling instead of Peds.

Very happy that Nankervis showed his best form tonight
Bond also impressive

Laird a dreadful first half, better second half

Pleased that we gave Pedlar a crack. We're giving him every chance. Not sure he's done enough though.

Curtin pretty quiet and a few poor fumbles. Hopefully we write these teething problems off.

The Draper Lid is off already. Sheesh

Definitely Bond

Predicted Matthew Nicks round 1 side

B Worrell - Murray - Michalanney
HB Hinge - Keane - Laird

R O'Brien - Dawson - Rankine
C Cumming - Crouch - Sholl

HF Rachele - Fogarty - Neal-Bullen
F Walker - Thilthorpe - Keays

I Peatling - Soligo - Curtin - Milera
S Draper

E Nankervis - Pedlar - Bond - Murphy

This seems to be the side Nicks is angling towards

The fact that, outside of tonight's 23, we have:
Rachele
Michalanney
Taylor
Jones
Berry
Butts
Dowling
Schoenberg
Milera
Murphy

Shows that depth is where it hasn't been for a long time.

Didn’t Rankine play?

Nank and Draper have locked themselves in R1. Sid better not be the sub, turned the game in the last quarter
As others have said, I think he turned the game because he was sub, fresh while others were tired. Considering his back management, etc., I think this game has in fact showed that sub would be a very good impact position for him for a while.

Reckon Curtin would benefit from playing at AO and what should be a win. Up against a good defence in Brisbane, muggy conditions not really suited for him.

Yep Dermie referring to last year and lack of depth and assuming it’s the same for this year. We clearly have depth in most positions now.

Predicted Matthew Nicks round 1 side

B Worrell - Murray - Michalanney
HB Hinge - Keane - Laird

R O'Brien - Dawson - Rankine
C Cumming - Crouch - Sholl

HF Rachele - Fogarty - Neal-Bullen
F Walker - Thilthorpe - Keays

I Peatling - Soligo - Curtin - Milera

E Nankervis - Pedlar - Bond - Murphy

If he plays Milera ahead of Nank I’m going to smash his face in.

If Draper is sub I’ll break his legs.

I’m accepting of Laird as I just can’t see him missing.

Of that side I’d have Curtin sub over Draper. You can’t leave him sub after that performance.

I’d now go with…

B: Hinge - Murray - Michalanney
HB: Worrell - Keane - Nankervis
C: Cumming - Peatling - Soligo
HF: Neal-Bullen - Fogarty - Keays
F: Rachele - Thilthorpe - Walker
R: O’Brien - Dawson - Rankine

Int: Draper - Curtin - Taylor - Crouch
Sub: Dowling

Emg: Sholl, Ryan, Berry

Notes:
Laird is this year’s Brodie Smith. How anyone thinks he should be out there in Rd 1 is beyond me. A selfish mess of a player. If he was forbidden from screaming for the ball when in a blatantly worse position than the player with the ball and also forbidden from kicking the ball under any circumstances, maybe I could stomach him being out there. Otherwise, nope.

Nankervis and Draper MUST be rewarded for their performances against Brisbane.

Milera needs to regain confidence and form in the SANFL before being considered.

I understand the desire to have a “stopper” in the side, but Bond is just not for me.

I’m fully aware that Taylor won’t be selected, but having someone like Laird, Milera or even Sholl ahead of him is nonsense to me. He’s too good to not be playing and already proved this in the back end of 2024.

Pedlar is another who I just can’t see a spot for and his skill level is somehow getting worse.

Oscar Ryan should be a lot closer to playing than he is in reality due to us needing another speedy ground level player in defence.

I’d keep Crouch in for now.

Dowling to me is an ideal sub due to his versatility.

What do you think the player would prefer?
I think in your debut game you'd want 4 quarters to prove yourself, particularly if you were a top 5 draft pick. Also if your whole family is invited to watch you want to be out there as much as possible.

Don't disagree but there's just no way Nicks drops both Laird and Milera.

How often we dropping one of the key tall backs?
Could we go with Murray and Worrell agaisnt some sides?
Collingwood are one team that has a fleet of smalls, port even.

I know he’s mobile, but playing as a forward with Fog, Tex and TT in the side isn’t going to be easy. He showed enough last year but I’m not happy with that structure. Not enough ground ball pressure.

So come round 1, you genuinely think Draper would prefer to be playing an SANFL trial game over half a game at Adelaide Oval in front of 50k people? I understand what we’d all prefer, but there’s absolutely no way at all that any debutant isn’t going to choose the debut as sub option.
