Morrison dodged his responsibilities for unaccompanied minors as the responsible minister, and removed access to assistance from advocates with migration law qualifications. He keeps a model boat on his desk, apparently, to celebrate his achievement. I agree it is a stain, and one this government celebrates.
Yep, they take pride in tragedy. It's been proven time and again that this party is one of moral vacuity, completely devoid of compassion, entirely unwilling to engage with anything outside of the very narrow worldview of the incredibly privileged people that form the fabric of the party.

But I would point out too, like SimpkinByTheDockOfTheBay rightly says, the policy history in this area is a stain on the country as a whole, and by extension, every one of us, its constituents. It's something that has been a rallying cry at election time and something that broad swathes of the country have actively supported by voting for it, and others who have tacitly supported it in their apathy. It's not just a stain on the Liberal Party.

Could not agree more.

There's a reason typewriters are back in vogue with certain types of people.
There’s plenty of options out there, but by nature none of them are out of the box solutions, Coy.im is up there..
Phones by nature have unified customer identifier, they can be cross referenced with other data so if you’re surfing the web they can identify you. Not great choice for encrypted communication.

Off topic but what ever happened to Paul Le Roux?

The cruelty is the point.

Is he related to the South African fast bowler Garth Le Roux?

They should be allowed to stay. They are victims of political posturing as you say. Dutton chose them as the sacrificial victims to make sure the world understands we mean what we say.

All your points are valid on this, except the above IMO. The primary audience for this activity is not "the world", it's an audience much closer to home. They literally couldn't care less about boat people either way - they do care about trying to harness more votes and wedging Labour on border control.

Yes, certainly a domestic audience.

But also international.

To stop people coming here asking for help.
Or prevent:

This is the problem:
The intake and recognition process is incredibly slow, overladen with cold bureaucratic processes and is deliberately stagnated, thereby resulting in crude cost-saving like detention during assessments. Also, people waiting in Indonesia don’t want to wait that long and in the past have jumped on not so safe boats. An additional problem is the temporary protection visa, which should be reviewed sooner rather than later.

It is not known how many people lodged offshore refugee visa applications in 2015 (it was approximately 35,000 in 2013–14) but the average processing time for refugee visas from time of application to the grant of visa in 2014–15 was approximately 14 and a half months (62.7 weeks).

During 2018, 1.56 million people who sought asylum were recognised as refugees, through group recognition of refugees arriving in larger numbers, individual assessment of asylum claims or through granting temporary protection. The nations in which the largest numbers of refugees were newly recognised in 2018 were Turkey (402,550), Sudan (190,290), Uganda (180,660), Germany (105,540) and Cameroon (55,320).

Australia recognised 10,300 refugees in 2018, most of them given temporary protection visas. In global terms, Australia was ranked 29th for recognition of refugees in 2018 – 30th per capita and 60th relative to GDP.

Australia’s contribution through asylum and resettlement processes
The most accurate reflection of Australia’s contribution can be found by combining the numbers of given protection for the first time through an asylum or recognition process or given further protection through resettlement. In 2018, 1.65 million people had their refugee status recognised or were resettled.

By this measure, Australia recognised or resettled 23,002 refugees in 2018 (1.39% of the global total), being ranked 14th overall, 20th per capita and 60th relative to national GDP.

The world includes the people who would otherwise come here asking for our help.
