Rank the Drafts between 2000-2010

Too early to say anything about 2011 or 2012, and I'm keeping it to the 21st Century.

1. 2001 - 4 Brownlow winners, and countless other guns. Best by a mile. Key players: Ablett, Swan, Mitchell, Bartel, Hodge, Judd.
2. 2008 - not as good as 2001 in quality, but in terms of quantity it is awesome. About 40 players who could craft a solid AFL career. Key players: Naitanui, Beams, Hannebury, Sloane, Sidebottom, Rockliff.
3. 2006 - pretty good draft. Maybe not the best, but there were a lot of good players taken. Notably it seemed to be a sweet spot for KPP's. Key players: Selwood, Kennedy, Hawkins, Reid, Goldstein, Boak.
4. 2007 - another pretty solid draft. Again, probably another mid-ranking draft. Key players: Cotchin, Selwood, Dangerfield, Walker, Kreuzer, McEvoy.
5. 2010 - potentially excellent, despite the loss of several players due to pre-listing. Key players: Liberatore, Darling, Bennell, Prestia, Gaff, Parker.
6. 2000 - fairly solid. Not world-class, but a lot of good players drafted. Key players: Riewoldt, Kerr, Cornes, Burgoyne, Cross, Petrie.
7. 2005 - better draft than 2002-2004. Had some sweet picks, but probably not on the level of the 2001's of the world. Key players: Pendlebury, Murphy, Kennedy, Swallow, Thomas, Jack.
8. 2009 - reasonable I guess. Still only 4 years on so could get interesting within time. Key players: Fyfe, Martin, Carlisle, Talia, Barlow, Gunston.
9. 2004 - not exactly a draft to write home about, unless you're Hawthorn. Key players: Franklin, Roughead, Deledio, Cloke, Griffen, Lewis.
10. 2002 - not great. Not a lot of real success stories here. Still significantly better than those late 80's drafts. Key players: Watson, Goddard, Minson, McVeigh, Wells, Simpson.
11. 2003 - probably the weakest draft since 2000, but it had enough successes if you knew where to look. Key players: Cooney, Stanton, Fisher, Shaw, Tuck, Walker.

i rate 2008 very highly. I think depth wise, it is the best. 2001 is the best in terms of stars.

What a stupid post.

What is stupid about the post.

You get a good guide about the strength of the draft after 5 years, and a definitive guide after 7 years.

The 2009/2010 drafts as an example, are still fairly much unexplored. Impossible to give an accurate rating at this stage.

2009 is under rated, of the top 40, 22 have already shown enough to be very solid AFL level players, only Gysberts has been delisted in the top 20, and jury is still out on a few players due to injuries at this stage.

Future Guns from this draft: Fyfe, L.Jetta, Carlisle, Christensen, D.Martin, Trengrove, Scully, Talia, Duncan, Black, Gunston, Reid,

Other Good players: Morabito, Rohan, Menzel (injuries pending), Melksham, Lucas, Pittard, Bastinac, Colyer, Stevens, Gawn

Rookie/PSD: Barlow, Hardingham, Daw, Silvagni, Howlett, Hams, Crameri, Casboult, Podsiadly, Tuohy, C.Beams

This is not taking into account recycled players.

I think the OP probably needs to put more example players for each year. There's going to be a handful of guns taken in every draft, but once you start going to around the 12-15 best players taken, you get a better feel for how much true quality was there.

I also think it's interesting to note that 2002-04 are widely considered to be three of the weakest drafts of that decade. I wonder if that can be attributed in any way to the strength of the 2001 draft (i.e. if the player was a star, he'd be a star regardless of the year he was drafted, but for a lot of players the difference between being a 40-game player and a 100-game player is often simply the situation that he finds himself in when he is drafted).

How is Rioli not a key player in your 2007 draft. I know he is hated on these boards but he has had a great start to his career despite constant injuries.

I also think more players should be listed so we get a better feel as to how strong the drafts were.
Yep you're right absolute flog and only good for highlights, not elite enough to be concerned.

He is a 2 time premiership player, AA, kicked many goals and has been better then Kreuzer, McEvoy etc listed from that draft

I'm not saying he is the best player, it's just weird he left him out when he has achieved a lot for a player hampered by 4 hamstrings and ankle injuries for many years.

So where do you think 2013 will be in this list? Will it be mid to lower end?

Literally impossible to say, as none of them have played AFL.
