BJ is back in a big way. His last 2 games have been superb even for his standards better and better. The extra space to run in midfield is doing him wonders. He is gonna keep getting better. Dont forget this is his first part season back from reco. lol he hasnt even hit full flight yet.

Whilst I still want to see how Raph goes against the best in the biz this week, thought it interesting to go back into the annuls of time. Garry Lyon is a chronic fence sitter who must get a nasty rash, but did stick the neck out on the following article (excerpts). Maybe that explains why he sits on the fence.

Garry Lyon Tuesday, May 27, 2008

IT is about this time of the year that clubs out of the picture or next address what one football heavyweight described to me as “list clogging”.
That is, identify players sitting on club lists with no great prospect of enhancing their team’s chances of winning a flag.

On pure statistics they may be able to justify playing from one week to the next, but the harsh reality is their time has almost come and all they are effectively doing is tempting the club to continue playing them in the hope they may continue to make the club competitive now. Ultimately, however, it is to the detriment of the club’s future.

And quite often, a list clogger can be drawing a significant salary, compromising the team’s ability to re-sign existing talent worthy of a wage increase, making them vulnerable to offers from other teams.

Ross Lyon will now have to make a decision on Schneider. I think he’s clogging up things at the Saints.

Raphael Clarke, a hefty investment, is a list tease. He could remain for another three years, and he still may be promising, but not delivering. He’s clogging.

It's amazing how things can change in a few months. I see Schneider got a mention here and he has been nothing short of excellent since coming back into the team. I take comfort in the fact that Raph has confronted his epilesy and is having a go, which is all I ever ask from my team.

Isn't it funny, how people judge things though. If we had finished 5th, people would be reluctant to shower praise on us, but now we finish 4th and everyone has jumped on.

It can swing the other way as well though. While there is a good chance that Gwilt , Raph, Chucky, Fiora, Schnieder and McQualter ( group A) will be around next year, once again at the end of 2009 we will be looking for the weakest link.
These will by the guys under pressure from Allen, Armitage, Miles, Steven, Macca and Eddy (Group B), who will be looking for regular spots on the team.
It is hard to guess who will be best 22 in a years time, can the group A players keep improving to keep ahead of the Group B players.

Pretty irritated that Raph has been named in the backline for the upcoming match. Hopefully it's all smoke and mirrors and he'll be in the forward line where he's been playing so well.

Dempster going down does not help, hence why Raph getting named in the backline.

It is a bit of a worry, Ross doesn't tend to play the same games as other coaches (eg: Mal Michael being named at full forward last weekend)

Raph did play the majority of last weekend roaming the half back line though, and was servicable (admittedly not against the strongest opposition)

I agree that it is a bad spot for him , but I think he is better than the alternatives.

I can't see Raph playing anywhere bar defence, given the team which has been named and our clear intention to try and get BJ and Gram upfield.

It's a real shame, as whilst he doesn't lack courage to back into packs the way he plays is much more suited to playing forward.

The little fumbles and getting run down occasionally do not always hurt at CHF, but they kill you in the centre or CHB. Doublely true against the Cats who thrive on a turnover with opponents out of position.

If I see another 'Raph Clarke has arrived post', I'll throw up.

This guy is great against weak sides but today just showed how far away he is from being an AFL football player.

His decision making is crap but more importantly his disposal is at junior football level - he kicked 4 passes that totally missed the target with 2 of them going along the ground..HOW THE FK CAN OUR PLAYERS UP FIELD MARK KICKS THAT GO ALONG THE GROUND ROSS?

Took a good mark - before he kick at goal I tried to get onto Betfair to have a bet that he would miss the goal - this guy is USELESS.

Cardio - how's the heart?

Geez mate, Raph was hardly our worst. Harvs had a shocker.

Thought he was pretty good. When did he get outmarked?

One clanger in greasy conditions - is that a problem?

I have not been Raph's greatest fan, and watch him critically, but he did plenty of off the ball work and spoiled/tackled when required.

Agree SS.

I love X's ability to bring the ball to ground and lay a tackle, but he wasn't quite right.

I actually think he needed a run at AFL level big time. Some will argue he should be dropped. Whilst I can't argue based on that performance, he is a quality player that can play much better as soon as next week.

Raph was quite good, and I'm not sure what I have missed with his game (some have been critical).

Hadn't noticed that - unbelieveable. Do they have the interns writing for them? Every week I read the reports and wonder whether they actually watched the game. I thought the beers were far too expensive at the footy to get sloshed, but maybe they are tax deductible for the press.

if he hasn't arrived yet, he's closing quickly now.

tonight, you really couldn't ask him to do any more. When the game was up for grabs, he was superb.

to do it in a high pressure final. a pretty decent indicator.

An absolutely superb, top quality game from Raph. He looked poised, he looked calm. He took the Collingwood forwards on, and his delivery was top notch. A great game. :thumbsu:

I don't think I've ever seen him so composed and calm with his decision making. And I don't think he had a single turnover. Best game I can remember him playing

Yeap, a few of us (including me) were pretty grumpy with him after last week, but all is totally forgotten with that. He was the best I've ever seen him tonight - best of all to see was his decision-making and disposal, for mine. He just didn't really panic and kick a clanger. Great stuff. Would love to see him and Xavier become strong, and frequently present, contributors next year.

It was a nice game from Raph. His field kicking is so clever now, it must just be a confidence thing.

Game suited him well tonight.

ie: He had no opponent and had alot of support.

Hawks will be the real test.

The Hawks tend to zone, rather than man up - so he may be free to continue his prolific run of good form.

Go Raph :thumbsu:
