Within the broad category of midfielders weve identified the need to draft for inside midfielders (Monfries) and also outside pacy midfielders (Pearce perhaps at 40).

Do we also need to look at negating types - taggers. Stenglein (who was an average tagger IMO) is gone, Shirley SHOUDLNT be in our best 22 but will probably keep getting a regular gig. There doesnt seem to be alot of other standout options in the Crows team now to step into this important role in todays game.

Do other Crows fans think we should look at this area? From the footy draft site this bloke below could possibl fit our needs - expected to go around pick 30.

Dean Polo
Details:
Club: Wy Yung/Gippsland
DOB: 5 August 1986 Hgt: 187cm Wgt: 78kg
Position: Onballer
Natural Foot: Left

Honours:
Victoria Country 2004
All Australian 2004
Wing in TAC Cup Team of the Year 2004
National Draft Camp 2004

TAC Stats:
2002: 1 game, 0 goals, 3.0 PPG
2003: 15 games, 5 goals, 19.1 PPG
2004: 19 games, 5 goals, 24.6 PPG

Strengths: Polo is an ungainly looking but extremely effective midfielder. He works hard and just keeps finding the football in close. He is very good overhead for his size and is very good at winning the ball at stoppages and kicking it forward.

Dean will put his head over the footy, has good pace and has plenty of improvement left in him. Can do a job on an opposition player when instructed, such as Ryan Griffen in the carnival. Also has very good endurance.

Weaknesses: Polo can tend to lack poise and rush his disposal by foot rather than balancing, and some of his decision-making can be questionable. Like a lot of kids needs to put on some weight. Doesn't kick enough goals.

Footydraft.com comment: I suspect he might go a bit later than we have him, but I think he deserves to go early. Has the runs on the board and has been a big improver this year. If he can get a bit more poise into his game will be a real player.

A hard wingman, eh?

Sounds like a bit of alright though.

A hard winger like Trigger perhaps..........I didnt notice he was a wingman but what about the concept I mentioned. Do you think we need to recruit someone with good defensive capabilites with a view to a tagging role?

I believe we need reinforcements across the board. Take your pick:

Ruckman or two (must be able to take a mark and be useful around the ground)
Inside midfielder or two
Outside midfielder
Tagging/run-with midfielder
A second key defender to assist KMac (potentially Rutten, but I'm not convinced)
A key forward (hopefully Fergus)

As I've said before, any chance we had of a relatively painless transitional period evaporated in the 2002-2003 preseason. Now we need all the help and reinforcements we can get.

It will take more than one good draft to have us in premiership contention.........no doubt about that.

Saturday will be a step in the right direction though. No more trading good draft picks for Schells, Fitzgeralds, Careys, Hewitts etc. etc.

You don't draft taggers. Its a waste of pick. You pick an inside or outside midfielders and you bring them along into AFL footy as a tagger. Josh Carr started out as a tagger but developed into a lot more. Kane Cornes has started off as a tagger and still does some tagging jobs but he will be more attacking in the coming years.

You don't target to draft a tagger.

That's a given, but you can still identify qualities that could see a draftee become one as part of his wider football education.

I think Scott Thompson might well fill this role for the time being, but yeah, in that instance we could well be mugging Pietro to settle accounts with Paolo.

We still have Shirley! :D

I think we can use Monfries as a tagger if he puts on a few kgs.

But you are right, we have Shirley :D

DT Thompson is a naturally attacking footballer who I seriosly doubt will be used as a tagger. In his 4 years with Melbourne was apparently never used in a negating role.

Could it be that Fisher from Melbourne maybe being thought of to fill that kind of role?

Yeah, hence my comment about robbing Peter to pay Paul. I dunno, I just like his inside qualities - seems to suit that role better than what we already have.

You could well be right about Fisher... but, we still have Shirley.

The only problem with Fisher theory is that he is also the attacking type and is not instinctively defensive enough

I don't like the feeling implied when everone says... "but we still have Shirley"

Backup only - a wonderful opportunity for someone, anyone to put his (or her) hand up to be the clubs new negating player - but not Shirley please :o

Yeah Sugar was naturally attacking as well and I think Craig will insist on every player having an attacking edge to their game.

Fisher is not going to run through the lines.
He's not a strong mark apparently.

So what role is he being considered for? - his time trial would suggest he has the stamina to play a run with role.

One of the reasons that Fisher hasn't been drafted in the past is that he has been regarded as lacking early leg speed, which is different to speed over distance - stamina. Whether he has improved this facet of his game would be critical as to whether he is worth drafting, and whether he could play a run with role.

Slow run with players don't run with!! :D

I agree but Stinger wasn't quick and he matched up Ok on Judd?

Its a little like basketball zone off on them and make them play a game their not comfortable with.

Stinger never stood Judd. Shirley is Judd/Camporeale specialist :D
Better example of my slow tagger v speedy classy midfielder then - thanks ;)

Uh uh - not true. Shirley is one of the quicker players in the club over a short journey.
I won't argue the toss on that one. - just the fact you blew my whole argument out the window ;)

By the way how do you view Jared Moore - best afield in the TAC grandfinal, was excellent yet because he is another slowish midfielder is not rated very highly (for this draft)

I asked you about him in one of the other threads and you never came back to me with the answer. I think that "slow" label is a bit of a furfy. He did finish 10th at the draft camp in the 20 meter sprint with 3 seconds ;)

IMHO worth a look. Inside midfielder who gets the footy uses it and is not slow. At 178 cm / 84 kg his body is AFL ready.

Exactly Stiffy. Give a younger player a tagging role to learn the midfield trade. Have the likes of Goody who play a run-with role, whilst getting plenty of it himself. Reckon Dogga may get a tagger role next year (waiting for rebuttals).

Very serious chance if available at 40, I think.

All things being equal - it is ruck and midfielder for our first two picks (Wood/Monfries at first and other at second), probably KPP at 28, and something surprising at 40.

Sorry name didn't ring a bell with me.
Then someone mentioned best afield in the grandfinal and I remembered watching the game and being very impressed.

A clone of Greg Williams in build only - I'll let the AFC recruiting team judge him as it would be a really tough call on the limited game time I've seen.

:) Said this a couple of months ago - didn't get much support - good to have you on board ;)
