I think Stats has added a breath of fresh air to the Ch 9 commentary team. It is good to see someone who is willing to disagree with Ian Chappell and take him to task on his BS. He appears well on screen and has clearly moved past Tubby in the pecking order, who is being dragged down by Ian Healy's constant references to being fat and what they did in the old days.

I think Slats is a little under-rated at times. Sure he can be annoying and the sound of his voice makes angels cry, but he doesn't seem to be a sheep and generally forms his own opinion. Since this is a 'Rate a Commentator' thread, I'll give him 7.5/10

I still rate Tubby as the best of those 3, Slats is second, quite funny at times the banter between him and his old opening partner is gold at times. Healy needs to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mark Nichollas is the best by far

being groomed as teh ch9 idiot once tony greig goes.

you need some one to be an ignorant fool so the others look good.

heals makes a few bad calls but is the best of the new lot.

My favourite trio is Mark Nichollas, Richie Benaud and Bill Lawry

Ian Healy annoys the shit out of me. At least with Slats he is good comic relief, and Tubs clearly knows a shitload about the game (he is consistantly picking up on stuff like "i think he'll get a wicket soon" etc and being right). Heals on the other hand tries to be comic relief but i find him ****ing annoying.

1. Never funny

2. Spends all day talking about the wicketkeepers footwork! or making blatantly obvious comments like "ooh that was a good ball"

3. Tells uninteresting stories of the old days!

4. Can't answer a Johnny Walker Trivia question to save his life!!

Slats isn't terrible, at least he is in touch with the modern game. I just dislike how he professes to be best mates with whatever player is flavour of the moment. He gets a pass mark

Far better than Tony, or "You wanna know what i think" Chappelli.

Mark Nicholas is a parrot, who repeats anything the ex cricketers in the box say in order to look knowledgeable. I don't care for him at all.

Love Slater and his bill lawry impersonations.

**** it was gold when Lawry was late for his stint in the com box in the 2006 boxing day test and Slater said that if a wicket fell he'd do the lawry impersonation.

Reminded me of the 12th man.

Slater commentates like he played his cricket. 100 kms an hour and full of passion. He seems like a fairly knowledgable guy who speaks and presents well.

As a bloke in his 30's I tend to enjoy listening to the newer crop of commentators than guys like Lawry, Chappelli and Grieg who have been out of the game for over 30 years.

Although sometimes Ian Healy is a little too parochial for my liking.

And Tony Greig, who responded to the racism accusations from Harbhajan by asking 'what did Symons say first?', well that just sums him up. An old school apologist for racism.

Slats is Brilliant. I think he is better working overseas. Like the 2005 ashes, he was great.

Really enjoy his work.

Heals, Tubs and Greigy can all go. Bring in David Lloyd!

Have to agree there, he was brilliant in India with Athers and Sanjay. Now that's a quality team.

I can not stand Ian Healy, mainly because of point 2. Worst commentator ever, and thats coming from a freo fan.

You gotta admit, its kind of his area of expertise. More credibile him talking about keepers than fast bowlers run ups.

Fair enough, but when the ball gets smashed to the boundary i hate hearing "oh the keeper was in a good position to take that one"

What the hell.

Generally i enjoy Tubs commentary because he knows whats going on (not just because he was a batsman), he picks up what he thinks are bad field placings, negative or positive captaincy, and has ideas on what the captains are probably thinking. Ive lost count of the amount of times hes said "well id expect so & so to come into the attack soon" only for them to be brought on next over. Tubs rules!

Healy offers nothing in those areas.

Very good commentator. As others have said youthful, in touch with the modern game and entertaining, hard not to like him. Easily the best of the more recent former Aus players.

Ian Healy is one of the more knowledgeable commentators on the program.

And someone needs to talk about the keepers, no one says a thing unless we drop one.

Especially when 2 of the best keepers in the world are in this series.

Yes, I would go along with that. I've liked his commentary so far. The trouble with good new talent is, over time, they tend to slip back into the ways of the more senior members. Let's hope Slats can keep his freshness.

I can't believe that champion flog Tony Greig is still stinking up the airwaves.
