Roast Ratten's Coaching - Negatives and Positives

I have a good plan, when we get to six goals up and have our opposition on toast, why don't we play our full back at full forward. Why don't we also rotate our full forward who has kicked 8 goals.

If it wasn't for Judd's late efforts and their bad kicking, we may have even lost. Ratten is a joke. He WAS outcoached by Jade Rawlings today make NO mistake about that. We won because we have Judd and they don't - simple.

Why does he refuse to play Kreuzer forward? How can he possibly say Hartlett looked like he was moving well?

He was shit house when I made my original thread then and he still is, ive got nothing new to add. Still can't pick a good side. Still can't respond to in-game situations. Still doesn't make any game-changing moves. Still gets out-coached every week...

Probably why we recruited him ... to help us win games and all. He's lucky we have Fev, Murph, Gibbs, Simmo, Waite, Kreuzer, Betts, Thornton, Jamison and Bower too. Fortunately all clubs have a playing list and most have stars that get them over the line.

Whilst I don't think Ratten is an 'absolute joke', you wouldn't want to think he was satisfied with that win, well a win is a win, but if the team is going to make a real charge for the finals, today's game is nothing to measure anything by.

Seriously the boys butchered the ball at nearly every opportunity, whilst Grigg got probably the most possessions he's ever had, so many of them were turnovers and miffed kicks, one of his shots on goal under no pressure was laughable.

Gibbs was unsighted for most of the game, Eddie Betts was quiet, Houlihan was good in the first quarter and *dreadful* after that. The only thing that kept us in the game besides Judd and Fevola was the fact that Richmond are the most unskilled team in the league. It was truly a VFL standard game.

But Ratten really needs to work out a decent forward game-plan. The ball gets bombed-in or speared into Fev, who will mark, or come off his hands. Eddie Betts gets in there, but besides that....nothing. Sure Garlett is a WIP and Setanta wasn't playing, but no-one else did anything in our forward 50 today, just the same crap we have seen against teams like the Bummers (twice), Adelaide and the Swans.

Ratten should be using other players to come down the ground and assist. What exactly is Houlihan's role in the forward line besides the one or two passes to Fev a game? Why aren't guys like Grigg and Joseph and Simmo blocking and putting more pressure to keep the ball deep in our forward 50? And why isn't Ratten figuring out ways to counter this glaring deficiency?

Are we short of players that understand their roles in applying forward defensive pressure? We showed great signs in the beginning of the year and have gone down the toilet ever since.

You would like to think that by next week guys like Gibbs, Thornton, Simpson, Russell and Grigg wake up and Ratten will remind the boys we haven't beaten the Swans since the year 2000 - and they are now officially a 'sh!te team' - otherwise we will get beaten by the Swans again and will have our charge for the finals severely compromised, if not thrown away altogether.

I am pretty sure Fev came off in the last quarter because he gave away an undisciplined free kick and 50 in the back line.

You need to remember that Richmond had nothing to lose today and our backline is missing some pretty important players. Bower and Waite have been two of our best defenders in the early part of the year plus Setanta being out hurt us I think.

I think a few people on here need to remember that Ratten can't dispose of the ball for the players. If you want to criticise who Ratts plays in the team, at least have some plausible alternatives.

We have basically booked our finals spot today after today's win, and the Fev machine kicked 9, and we have some 'negative nellie' thrown some brickbats, instead of bouquets after today's win ..

Shit, I thought I was negative, but I'm bloody on cloud nine right now, knowing we'll be playing finals most likely for the first time since 2001 ...

If anything, the players are to blame, not Ratten, for the Tuggers getting back into the game in the 4th quarater ..
We've still got North Melbourne, Melbourne, Shitney (who are on the skids) to come, and assuming we beat those crap sides, we're in the finals with our percentage.

Besides, I don't want Rodney Eade coaching Carlton, he's an annoying 4-eyed poindexter

Didn't mind the move of Jamo to the forward line - Ratts is still developing the team and giving players time at the other end of the ground can only be good for their development and that of the teams in the long term.

Maybe Ratts isn't strategically the best coach in the competition, but since he's been our coach (a) we're no longer the worst team in the AFL and look likely to play finals this year, and (b) the boys play for him and respect in.

Sure, you can say the Judd trade, Gibbs & Murph's development etc, but you can't say that the coach has not had an impact.

Many players have improved under Ratts including JR, Setanta, Gibbs, Jamo, Bower, Thornton, Kruz, Hammo, and Griggs.

Also, he's willing to learn as a coach.

We played much better against St.Kilda, but we got the 4 points today, hence I'm happier now, then after the result against the Stains ...

Only 3 more wins this year, and we're heading back to september ...

As a club we have shown we can get ahead of ourselves and the last quarter was a prime example.
Really thought that we had our foot on their throat at 3/4 time and after fev's first we all went into party mode. Jammo forward, everyone trying to give fev his 9th.....If Grigg had kicked the 'soda' from 30 out it would have been lights out and a 10 goal + win on the cards. Didn't happen and they capitalised with a few quick ones and suddenly they had the momentum and we were out of shape.
I think that fev went off to try and refocus our delivery.
