Two-year extension for Carlton coach Brett Ratten

402465-brett-ratten.jpg

CARLTON is set to offer Brett Ratten a new contract within days, but the club will stop short of extending his reign by three year Ratten, who has proven his worth beyond doubt with a spirited finals campaign, is almost certain to be rewarded with a two-year deal.

Club president Stephen Kernahan and chief executive Greg Swann yesterday indicated there would be a quick resolution.
Asked if Ratten would definitely be at the club next season, Swann said: "He will, that will happen."

Gotta say I was a little worried about Malthouse coming over.
This is awesome news and a just reward for a great Carlton man.

Well done ratts!

Great news, but not unexpected.

The heat was put on him early on to improve. Winning a final was the pass mark that was mentioned to the media but I don't believe it was that simple.

It would have been a disgrace if his contract was not renewed after a season like that and I am glad it has eventuated.

Well done Ratts - you are doing a fine job. :thumbsu:

CARLTON coach Brett Ratten's contract extension will be discussed at a board meeting this week but he already had clinched it before the agonising three-point semi-final loss to the West Coast at the weekend.

Blues chief executive Greg Swann said the board was united on retaining Ratten, who is expected to win a two -year deal.

"It will be done relatively shortly," he said, with discussions at a board meeting as early as tonight likely. "I cannot see any hiccups."

Swann said the board was not split on Ratten as coach.

"There has been no issue internally," he told SEN. "The board is not split. We said at the start of the year that we needed to improve and we have. And we said we could keep him informed throughout, and we have.

"We will get this done and we march on to next year."

Swann said he had witnessed improvement in Ratten throughout the season.

President Stephen Kernahan was also full of praise for Ratten.

"I've said it before and I'll say it again - we wanted improvement this year and we've got that," Kernahan said. "Our coaching staff have been fantastic. If anyone says we haven't improved from last year, I'd say we have."

Lets put this to rest shall we?

Doesnt get any more explicit than that.

Unless you happen to be St Kilda that is.

the coaches no the group really well and what every one is capable of. It's up to the players to take us to the top now as the caoches are probably doing all they can. A new coach would upset things maybe.

Didn't agree with his appointment - Simply because he wasn't the best available assistant at the time - I was for Mc Kenna for the record, Brett wasn't even a senior assistant at the time.
But the appointment was made and you have to support him and the club. We had a "L" plater on our hands and his inexperience cost us in a few tight games no doubt. He has progressed through to his "P's" with the odd small hiccup and now you'd say he is definitely an AFL standard coach now but he is in the scheme of things a B grade coach with some good assistants.
He deserves an extension and by late next season I think he will be knocking on the door of an A grader coach. He and the team may peak at the same time and the appointment I didn't agree with initially may well be justified. Lets hope.

By what measure Jock?

If you are going to put that out there back it up.

He's one a final and improving quickly but he's not Malthouse standard which most would consider an A grade coach as benchmark - I'm supporting the extension but you're not suggesting Brett is in his bracket are you ?

Largely agree with much of this.

Aside from the McKenna bit.

If I could interrupt a moment. I didn't expect everybody to start putting their two bobs worth in after I posted this news. I expected it to be read but to remain pristine - something pure - a single post thread for all to see and enjoy without the argy-bargy you cerebral graffiti daubers carry on with.

In future please desist from sullying my threads with your uneducated, petulant ramblings. Thanks.

Good news.

I like Ratts. :thumbsu:

Man, I'll admit, I have been torn at times.

I wasnt upset with the 'win a final or else' comment (or non comment) when it was made.

But I honestly cant fault the man for the past 12 months. Progress all over the park, solid recruiting (Duigan, Laidler, Curnow and the talls at the draft), structure changes have worked (Yarran and Hendo as backs, Walker and Thornton as forwards), game plan working to a tee, has adopted a style of play post Fevola that works better than pre Fev. Has had a backlin this year that had Yarran (10 games) Henderson (30 odd), Duigan (0 games) and Laidler (2 games). Has dealt with injuries to Jamision and Waite (our two most structurally important players), and Kruezer and Gibbs (both important players). He's open to the Media, accountable and the players seem to love him.

In fact, I struggle to see how he (or anyone for that matter) could have done a better job.

Personal gripe - I'd love to see him spend more time in the box. But thats just me. If he likes it down there, and the players like it, and it works, then who am I to complain.

I stand to be corrected here, but my understanding is that Ratten is getting feed-back from Richardson who is in the box.
If the respect and rapport is strong between the two, then there is no reason why it shouldn't work.

Would be giving Gavin Brown a gold star as well. Got a back 6 that leaked like a sieve, into a rebounding attacking asset, with a bunch of no-names.

Plus the fact Ratts put Yarran down back. A masterstroke.

Its just a personal gripe man. It just... irritates me a bit for some reason.

It seems to work fine for him though, and I have no logical reason to suggest he move back upstairs aside from it irks me for some reason.

We don't know. Not convinced many, if any, could've done a better job including Malthouse. MM did take 11 years to win a flag with the Pies. May have got into two GFs early on then were promptly 13th & 15th the next 2 years.

If Ratts goes with it next year, then it really must be working.
I just get the feeling though that it will go back to the old way next year.
The objective of the exercise may have been achieved.

Can't see it happening myself. It's evident he loves it down there where he's able to give the players feedback face to face.
