I'm still not sold that Johnston will play round 1 next year... I personally think that Rohan is a ready made footballer but being a bit more realistic, put O'Keefe there.

I am really sorry to destroy some hope in this thread,

But there is literally no chance Johnston will line up in our team from round one next year.

Besides the fact he was literally out injured all year,

We are also looking over the fact that key position forwards take allot longer to develop than midfielders (And even then it is rare for a second or first year player to have a huge impact in there first year (There are only one or two players who do this each year))

Lewis Johnston will be a fantastic player for us in the future (Go through last years draft threads I was pretty much praying for us to draft him)

But it will take him another year or two (Maybe even three) before he starts having a huge impact on matches, And it may be better for his confidence and development if he spends most of next year in the reserves.

I doubt we would be looking at drafting Bradshaw if we thought Johnston could make a huge impact next year.

Plus we have several players on our list that deserve opportunitys ahead of him and I doubt we would bring 4 tall forwards into a match (Bradshaw (IF Drafted), White and Goodes would all be ahead of him, And we have the option of resting Seaby, Mumford or ROK up forward.

For the balance of our team I would prefer for us to play an extra midfielder as very few teams if any start off with 6 players up forwards now days, They seem to name midfielders up there who run up to the midfield and congest the stoppages (If fact our team is actually quite well known for this )

Agree with pretty much everything Bonza said, although I do think Johnston could see game time in the 2nd half of the year. He has the advantage of already having a fairly developed body, in contrast to someone like Jack Watts anyway.

Anyway here's the team I would like to see with the list we have at this stage.

B: Smith - C Bolton - Grundy
HB: Malceski - LRT - Mattner
C: Jack - O'Keefe - Shaw
HF: Mcveigh - Goodes - Hannebery
FF: Meredith- White - Veszpremi
R: Seaby - Kirk - J Bolton
Int: Mumford - McGlynn - Kennedy - Bird

Notes:
-Richards very unlucky, but thats the back 6 I wanted. He'll probably be there Rnd 1, but I couldn't fit him into my team.

-Pre-season form will decide if Malceski gets a gig or not, but I'd love to see him there. For reliable kick-outs if nothing else.

-I prefer Vesz and Meredith over Moore and Ablett, but thats just personal preference. Roos will probably go the other 2.

-I've named midfielders on the HFFs as we often push them up on the ball anyway.

-I've gone for a fairly short forward line with Goodes and White the only real talls as i like the idea of having a bit more speed and mobility to help the defensive pressure, something we didn't do well this year IMO.

Bonza you have a point but I think Johnston will be given a fair swag of the pre season with the ones. I dont expect him to walk in as the no 2 forward like some that is asking to much and I have said so. But I can see him getting a gig rotating onto the HFF flank if he performs in the pre season.

Yeah I agree, mentioned it a few pages back. Doubt Johnston will debut Round 1, though I do see him playing extensively in NAB cup, and coming into consideration from about Round 5 onwards.

I think Johnston will make his debut next season (Especially if we don't get Bradshaw)

But if we draft Bradshaw he won't be a walk up start to our team in any stretch of the imagination, I mean we can't play 4 tall forwards that would be incredibly unbalanced, He will either have to bash the door down in the pre-season matches and through the reserves, OR we would have to be out of finals contention, Or have an injury to one of Bradshaw, Goodes or White.

Roo's has said Goodes is going to CHF and I think that's the way we will play it next year.

I can't see Johnston playing in the first half of the season, he is also coming of a serious foot injury.

Some of the expectations of a second year KPF are amazing.

I say let him develop, Don't throw him in for the sake of it and destroy his confidence.

Let him earn his spot in the 22, Once he can push out a key forward in our line up then he may play in our first 22.

I really hope he can do that though... I just wouldn't expect anything from him next year wait until 2011

Smith is primarily a shut down player in the ilk of Crouch. When Crouch was injured, Smith was given the opportunity to play on guys like Dale Thomas, which he did very effectively.

I'd like to see Malceski switch with Barlow and maybe give him some time on gronud as both plays been a touch inconsistent but Barlow has more upside IMO

Barlow is much taller than Malceski and not as fast, he'd play more as a tall midfielder, like Goodes did. Malceski is more a half-back flanker like Shaw and Mattner, and so are very different players. Malceski may not have much more 'upside' - in the sense we've seen his best in 07 - but that best is very good, and a player who is out of form, who just needs to find his feet, is generally preferable to a young player who can't hold down a position.

Agreed, but as he said, the half-forwards would be rotating into the midfield anyway, and McVeigh has shown he has a very good goal sense, with his 6 against the Dogs.

Why's that? Hanneberry is a highly skilled midfielder, Bradshaw is a KPF, why would Bradshaw force Hanners out of the team?

I completely disagree with this. Smith has very good hands in close, and I would love to see him transition into a midfield role. His skills are pretty good too.

Agree that in the long term Smith will be a midfielder but I hope he continues in defence next year. Ratten gave Bryce Gibbs a year and a half in defence and then he moved him into the midfield and it worked well.

Nup. I dont rate him across HF at all.

In 2009, I think roos often tried him across HF in the hope that a change would suit him well and help him get back into form - that maybe a goal here and there would help his confidence. Often he got dropped back to reserves and dominated with 30+ possessions, and a couple of goals, but Im not sure if this was playing across HF in these games. I think he struggles and feels unfamiliar across HF at AFL - watching him 2009 he REALLY struggled in this role.

I would like to see him play HB, and HB only - if anything he could do a lindsay gilbee (very similar players IMO) and push up onto the wing at times, and maybe get the odd long kick for goal on the run or through a handball from someone 50m out who cant make the distance.

I dont think malceski suits HF, and I dont think he will return to his best form if he continues to play there - i think roos needs to stick him on HB, and keep him there. Let him take the kick outs too - let him get a feel for the footy.

Anyways, I love malceski, and i think he has a fantastic pentrating kick and is full of class and can break the lines - something we probably lack in the back half now. Id love to see the swans backs trying to get the footy in his hands at every opportunity when coming out of the back half (almost like melb do with aaron davey - but maybe not that excessive!)

Yeh i understand that he is a far better HB and has a far better track record there. It's just he has the tools to be damaging from HF or wing. But i guess he hasnt done it yet.

But if Kennelly comes back, i'd have him and Mal playing off HB, Rhyce and Marty in the midfield with Marty as a run with player for the bigger athletic midfielders and Smith playing on the small dangerous forwards.
