Alright the first post match discussion is up for the year. This is the place to shoot the shit!

I think it was a great game until the last quarter. Fast, hard and highly skilled from both sides.

We lacked polish in front of goal and it was telling in the end. You wonder if the game would have taken on a different complexity if we had nailed those.

We got very little out of our debutants and that lack of experience was a big factor in this game. But we shouldn't crucify them for this as I think that would be unfair. Paine did a lot right however. Brought the ball front and centre, put on pressure and competed well.

Jolly was stuffed by the end and Dawes is no ruckman. We need give Jolly more support I think but maybe Dawes needs time in the role?

Sinclair was much better than I was predicting his brain farts in front of goal aside. He tried really hard, won a bit of the ball, his skills were pretty good but he needs greater body strength to make his tackles stick because he makes a lot of them.

Pendles is unbelievably good. So was Blair and Rusty. We should have a few more options in midfield this year.

We were absolutely terrible coming out of defence with our kick ins and ultimately I think this lost us the game. We need to fix this quick. Players didn't work hard to make options. But we just seemed to lack a game plan there.

Franklin and Cyril.... I hate you both :p

They were my quick, poorly articulated first impressions.

Go nuts!

Team aquitted themselves quite well considering they had 3 first gamers and half of the backline missing. Pendlebury is set for a very, very big year. Dawes and O'Brien need to step up their games.

Not happpy at all to be honest. Our 1st gamers looked like they weren't up to AFL level. Our last quarter effort was very poor as we got smashed around the stoppages and just didn't have that intensity.

Theres definitely room for improvement but I must admit the Hawks looked really good and will be the team to beat this year. Bring on next week!!!

Too many young players. Playing them all against the hardened bodies of the Hawks was a big mistake both for the team and for the players themselves. Bucks mentioned playing more young players was part of his agenda - stupid.

Need to work on stopping teams running through the middle so easily. It happened every time the Hawks got the ball out of our back line and they just ran coast to coast.

Not too worried about how we did overall, though, as we have lots of young guys in. If we had converted those 5 points to goals in the first half the game could have been completely different. This pool kicking in front of goal is pretty pathetic at this level.

Very disappointed with the result. Matched it with the Hawks for three quarters, and let it go in the last. Inaccurate kicking cost us, reaks of '09/'10. Some of the young kids didn't look up to scratch, and didn't have the experience to match it with the Hawks at the death.

Looking forward to Collingwood vs. Hawthorn when both teams have their best 22 playing.

As a known glass half empty guy.

NOT A FRIGGEN PROBLEM.

I saw that match as sweet, we are up & about.

Plenty to like.

This would be one of the few times I'm positive, apparently.

We are pacing ourselves & trying to get some more depth.
Exactly what we should be trying to do.

Far to young, and far too much inexperience.

Yagmoor isn't yet ready
Clarke was poor to shithouse
Seedy looked slow and lost, I'll let him go though debut as sub never going to get up to speed in a qtr
Harry was rubbish tonight
Keefe was ok, sinkers and rounds started ok and showed some good glimpses that's all though just glimpses.

Our first month will be difficult but as we get our outs back, we will be fine

Not sure if i'm disappointed or not. I wanted us to win, but i'm not too mad.

We were missing Didak, Beams, Wellingham, Tarrant, Brown, Johnson & Maxwell. That's a heck of a lot of our best 22.

The hawks are premiership favorites and honestly i cannot understand why, we matched them for three quarters and then dropped off with 3 rookies and a couple of players playing below their best. It's funny we were even written off as top 4 by some people if we can match it with the so called 'best'

That is the exact reason why i'm happy with the result, i'm happy to fly under the radar for a bit like we did in 2010. 2011 we were the best and everyone knew it. Geelong hunted us, and they did it. This year we are once again the hunters and we're hungry. But we're going to play it slow and not exhaust all our players like we did last year. I don't expect us to do anything amazing until at least round 16. But then we will be a force to be reckoned with.

We had a new coach, new players, new gameplan, new structure and we STILL matched it with the premiership favourites. That is an acheivement within itself.

We need to focus on getting our injured players back and to full fitness, and then we will be dominant again, but there is no rush.

With our young players Yagmoor & Sinclair were HORRIBLE. You cannot say they were good in any way. Keeffe & Paine showed a slight something.
Harry O didn't look in it & Marty Clarke had a solid game back.

Let's keep it quiet like it has been, slowly get our list fit and fighting. And hit em hard like we did in 2010. Go pies!

Left the middle of the ground a viable option way to easily for them.
Dawes is not a ruckman, said this repeatedly over the last few weeks and it cost us. Should of played wood limited time or ceglar instead of paine (who was ok). Got smashed in clearances when dawes had to ruck.
Kick outs are a huge problem, no leon means big problems this year.
Seedsman plays next week, looks the goods.
Want to see fasolo spend some time on the wing, his penetrating kicks are a massive weapon. Shame he is not a defender with that weapon
Pendles, sidebottom were the clear standouts in my eyes.
Clokes kicking hmm

It's ok. Richmond next week. Pies will make a statement against that rabble and get some form back in the lead up to the Carlton game. Pendles is am absolute superstar, I didn't see much of Thomas through the middle tonight which was a shame for you guys.

Yagmoor isn't yet ready
Agree there, I often wondered in the first half, if he was the sub & the TV commentators had got it wrong. I thought Yags must be the sub.:p

Positives: Pendles, Blair, pretty game, Sidey got a lot of onball time.

Negatives: Swan relatively cruising; Reid and Goldsack both hurt; Harry trying to be both rebounder and last defender at the same time - too conflicted; Clarke, Paine, Sinclair, Yagmoor all ran out of puff; Seedsman has class but lost us two goals; we didn't seem to runwith Mitchell (again) and he, like Geelong, kill us with quick rebound down the corridor (where we ain't).

Ummm.............. didn't have a lot of choice, might have had a few injuries.;)

I think one of the highlights was using Blair in the midfield. Something Malty didn't rate. I thought he was very good.

The hawks spread like no team I've seen before. There were free players all over the place.
There was 1 period of time where we got on top and had the belief... Then Buddy got 1 against the trend and they didn't look back.

My feelings are:

You cant go into a game with 3 debutants and another 4 with less than 10 games under their belt.
Paine impressed me with his work effort and pressure though. Yagmoor got found out.

We really missed our regular defenders. Taz and Maxy obviously the most.
Keefe needs more time.

We need to work out our kick outs. The Hawks seemed to have more numbers than us at the fall of the ball. Whether that was poor decsion making by the kicker I dont know, because you can only see so much on TV.

We need to play Woods as a second ruck. Dawes is not a ruckman,he is a forward.

We bombed the ball into the forward line to often.
If you look at how the Hawks went about it,they hit up their players going into the forward line and they did it too easily and too often.

We ran out of midfield rotations at the end.
This is where Johnson is so under appreciated. He just gets the job done with a minimum of fuss.
Once Johnno, Didak, Beams, Wellingham(you idiot) etc are back we should be fine though.

And last but definately not least.
WE HAVE TO TAKE OUR CHANCES IN FRONT OF GOALS.

Having said that, there are alot of positives to take out of this game.
But thats for another time.

2012 we lost an early game to saints in round 3 if my memory is correct and they won by almost the same margin in a low scoring game and both teams played off in the granny, doesn't matter what happens early on any team can turn it around in they're good enough, for some reason im not pissed at our loss, but rightfully so, we put up a good fight and i knew we weren't capable of beating the likes of hawthorn with buddy and rioli. absolutely destroyed us tonight.

don't take anything away from us, it's round 1, either team was gonna lose, it's footy, these things happens, whether you or i like it or not. we've got Richmond next week, we can rebound against them, use them as a platform and then carlton to set us up the week after. who knows who could come back next week or the week after, but win both of those and we've set ourselves up for a good start. just remember, you don't want the team to peak early. :thumbsu:

Tonight got me thinking, how much will we miss Leon taking the kick outs? doesn't he have some sort of record for accurate kicks, or marks taken from the kick or something like that?
