Autopsy Rd 14 Blues go down by 26 in an ugly game

Dusty is untaggable, trying would've been pointless
This. You can slow him down at the stoppage, but he's a difficult combination of strength, height and speed to have a player who can sit on him.

Chasing after him leaves the defensive player exhausted anyway, if he tries to split the zone with his run then you just have the next guy up the field close him. Our shape was awful on the day because we didn't have enough legs and discipline in our defensive half. Smedts basically unwound our shape.

I'm not sure if it is just me but did anybody else notice that we didn't tag Dusty the same way we tagged Ablett. Against Gold Coast every blues player had to bump into Ablett if they were near him. Yet against the tigers i felt no one was bumping into Dusty.

Maybe because Dusty has tatts !!

More importantly - who would win in a fight between Gazza's old man and Dusty's old man. I'd back the legendary No. 5 !!

Yes.

I was actually speaking with a mate before the game about this.

I mentioned that I doubt we'd go down that path with Dusty - I reckon he's the type to thrive on the back of it rather than let it affect him adversely.

My thoughts were that if we were going down that path with someone it should be Cotchin. The bloke turns to water under pressure.

I think thats crap. Yes Martin is a bull. But making life hard for a match winner like that should never to overlooked. Ed is tough enough to negate him.

If we can stop Ablett we can stop Dusty. Gaz has spent the last 10 years destroying tags.

Well done Kreuze!

MATTHEW KREUZER (Carlton): Continued his stellar form this season with another impressive performance that saw him dominate the ruck with 37 hit-outs and also gather 14 disposals and two goals.

Need to recruit a Pendlebury type, with poise, and who doesn't loose their shit in a frantic game...
Yep.
Line was well and truly put through his name yesterday.
I thought you were a bit harsh on Boeckhorst early in the season, but you where dead right. Did not show any intensity at all.

Negate - sure. But there's negating/tagging and then there's going above and beyond with some who you're confident you can throw off their game mentally.

We went above and beyond a fortnight ago with GAJ. We also went above and beyond last year against Motlop.

I don't see going above and beyond vs Dusty as being advantageous because, as I said, I reckon he's the type who would thrive on it rather than let it affect him.

Cotchin is another story entirely. Strikes me as a lot weaker mentally than Dusty.

We might have been a bit stiff. Think that the game plan was to curb Houli with Lamb and Dusty with Ed. We all know what happened with Lamb and I suspect that Ed picked up an injury early which may have influenced his running ability. Doesn't mean that others couldn't have stepped up and their was clearly nowhere near as much solidarity as there had been in previous weeks.
Richmond have lucked on to the very small forward line model simply because they have no taller options. Hurts us because we it leaves us a bit tall there. Will hurt them if Nankervis gets hurt and probably wont stand up in finals.

Probably won't stand up in finals?

Mate, we've been there and done that. It doesn't stand up in finals.

It didn't work when we had Eddie, Garlett and Yarran. What chance do you give it working with Castagna, Butler, Rioli and Bolton? :)

Don't rate them any chance without a lot of luck however there are some subtle differences from our group back then. Betts, Yarran and Jeffy were more dynamic but their blokes are maybe a bit more disciplined and better at holding the ball in. Jack is better than any key forward we had then (Setanta average and Waite all hit and miss) and Dusty is worth a few goals to them.
We were a kick off a prelim final the year they were all up and running having lost Gibbs and Kreuzer in the first final. Reckon we would have been a huge chance against Geelong in the prelim as well. No point crying over spilt milk and as I said I don't rate them but I have had a gutful of losing to them.

Agreed - the best way to counter Dusty is to bore him out of the game. He doesn't work all that hard defensively, and can go missing for long patches when the ball isn't coming his way. Win the ball and limit his supply and you go a long way to quelling his influence.

Do what the Russian KGB guy did in London! Tiny pellet of Polonium inserted in screw-in stud (can't take a brolly out onto the field unfortunately!) and at first stoppage player brushes sole of boot against Dusty's calf and triggers subdermal injection of Polonium. I know it's a bit severe but sometimes strong measures are required - it's called leadership!:D:eek:
