Yeah, that's true.. firsts always takes priority, but then you've opened up another question there of whether Garth is match ready for senior level.. he has played just the two games for a return of one goal in the firsts, which in insight has done reasonably well, ranking 7th overall in attack all season in a team that has dropped just four games.. on the other hand the seconds rank 2nd and Ploog has contributed just 13 goals.. the seniors have the ammunition but would you risk putting him in the team to assist the Meach with just 2 games..?

Thought I answered that question too.... No.. I don't think Garth is in the plans for the senior side in 2010.....

THE editor of a regional newspaper has been stood down after allegedly posting insensitive comments about the killing of a young policeman on his Facebook page.

The publishers of the Glen Innes Examiner, a Fairfax-owned newspaper, released a statement today saying editor Matt Nicholls had been stood down following the incident.

Mr Nicholls is alleged to have written on his personal page that the killing of Constable Will Crews, who was born and bred in Glen Innes, would boost circulation of the paper.

He is also alleged to have suggested the Glen Innes Examiner would "make the most" of the tragedy in which the 26-year-old officer was shot dead during a drug raid in southwestern Sydney on Wednesday evening.

The ninemsn website has reported that Mr Nicholls denied making the posts, but today the publisher of the Examiner announced he would be stood down as editor.


"The actions of Matt Nicholls, editor of Glen Innes Examiner newspaper, were totally unacceptable and we deeply regret any hurt caused to the family and friends of Constable Bill Crews and the Glen Innes community," Allan Browne, the CEO and publisher of Australian Regional Publishing, Fairfax Media, said in a statement today.

"Mr Nicholls has been stood down from his position as editor, effective immediately."

It's all true. I've been suspended with full pay until further notice. Got to cop it on the chin. I made those comments on Facebook, despite the The Daily Telegraph claiming I denied it. You live by the sword and you die by the sword.

Staggeringly poor choice of words under the circumstances. Please don't confuse your FaceBook brain fade with actual bravery, journalistic or otherwise.

I for one would love to see the "Train" back in the seniors.. I think Garth is a very good senior footballer and hope he does get another crack at it... As unlikely as I think that is...

Dunno what's bigger news, the Kanga's bombing out in both grades or the fact that Pickles has received 103 comments about his "f**k up".

I actually got a text Friday morning about all this, which I replied "Pickles aint even that silly" . . . . . . seems I can't back a winner anywhere at the minute :(

Well it was certainly a big day at Romsey on the weekend....

Arrived at half time of the Under 18's game and was highly entertained in a second half battle for a Grand Final spot. Both sides threw everything at the contest, Vandenberg looked very dangerous up forward for the Bombers while his direct opponent Douglas provided run and rebound. While the game looked iced when Kilmore drew to within a kick late in the quarter, the Bombers kept digging deep and kept the game in the balance. The second half performance of Snaith for the Blues though was exceptional and Kilmore worked their way through to next week with a solid win.
The two's game was high impact at the start but as the game wore on, the Cats gradually wore the Roos down, they were simply too quick for the Roos to stay with and ran them off their legs. It was an excellent contest though, the Roos still in with a chance deep into the final term before the Cats recorded a 17 point win.

The highly anticipated senior game kicked off with the Burra in complete control early. They had several chances with shots on goal but were just having trouble nailing the shots. Cole Laurie and Steve Ruane in particular looked dangerous early. As the quarter wore on the Roos, who in the early going looked tense had started to settle. Brenton Sutherland looked dangerous around the half forward line, Jake Powell was dominant across the half back line. The pace of the game eventually settled in the opening quarter to what we were going to see for the remainder of the day, much of the play between the two 50's. The sides going in at quarter time locked at 1.4 apiece.
The second quarter followed much the same lines. All of a sudden the one on one contests became the prime viewing. The ruck duel between Fishenden and Marchewka was riveting viewing, while the battle of the running wingmen also was a highlight, the problem continued to be going inside forward 50 though as both sides turned the ball over. The game was a pure arm wrestle in every way, which was suiting the Burra. 3.7 to 3.4 at half time and the game well and truly in the balance.
The third quarter saw the Burra come out and get an early goal on the board, from there they controlled the tempo of the quarter, getting another to kick the only 2 goals of the term, giving them a 15 point lead in a low scoring contest. At that stage it was always going to be tough for the Roos to get back.
The last quarter lifted in intensity. Both sides threw everything at the contest. The Roos worked hard to get back in the game, kicking a goal to reduce the margin to 9 points before a Diggers reply. The arm wrestle continued before a goal to Nathan Hole reduced the margin again. But it was too late. The Roos went forward again before the siren sounded, sending Diggers Rest into next week and the 3rd Riddell Vs Diggers Rest grand final in 6 years.

My Votes

3 - Shaun Sims (DR) - Was at his best, created when his side needed it the most.
2 - Steve Ruane (DR) - All class, in the end, was probably the difference between the two sides with his ability to steady the ship.
1 - Jake Powell (SK) - Provided run and carry all day for the Roos, was outstanding across half back.

A massive week ahead for two sides that have done it all before, this year probably signals the best chance for the Burra out of the three. The Burra are flying, can they continue to lock down their opposition for a result this week against arguably the best one on one side in the competition.

Mind you... Due to the other goings on for the day.. I am willing to concede that at some stages I may have overlooked some things :p
 
Interesting Final Series?

My opinion – these are the most ‘boring’ finals I have seen. I base this comment only on the match days that Kilmore have participated in, but what I have seen has been below expectations. I have stayed around to the end of the senior’s game on each of these days, and whilst the games have been close, in a lot of the cases the atmosphere hasn’t been there. I would be interested to know the RDFL attendance figures in comparison to previous years. You obviously get your normal following of participating ‘Club’ sides but there are two things I have noticed; they are not staying around watching other games, and there are very few ‘non participating’ club members coming to the games.

IMS, I know you have tried to talk it up but the main game on Saturday was just plain boring – the only thing of interest was the closeness of the scores. There were hardly any people there in comparison to previous years and there was zero atmosphere. The game was played in perhaps the best weather conditions of the series and to only have 11 goals kicked makes you wonder where the game is heading. If Diggers think they can hold Riddell to only five goals they might be kidding themselves. Let’s hope we at least get a decent attacking game.

What is the problem? Why the lack of interest? Have the hosting clubs made their expected profits? Have they used the right grounds? Is the RDFL as healthy as people say it is? Will the RDFL come out and say this has been a successful finals series? Maybe Grand Final day might be better, but the numbers worry me. Only 7 of the 12 Clubs have teams (football and netball) playing on the day and only 4 of the 12 Clubs have football teams playing. Last season we had 9 of 12 and in the football 6 of 12.

Once again, my opinion.

you are dead right about no atmosphere especialy the two kilmore finals might have something to do with the venue (nothing against rockbank) but with very limited parking and the travel the crowds were allways going to be small

I tend to agree with both of the above posts, the atmosphere at rockbank was non existant, and saturdays prelim was probably one of the quietest in recent yrs.
The game didnt have that x factor in to get the crowd going, and that is because of the way diggers play, defence, defence ,defence.
There game plan is very much like the sydney swans( patient, suck the life out of the game, and capatlize on any scoring opportunity)

lets hope that this sundays big game can have everyone sitting on the edge of their seats until the very end, and that diggers put in a much much better performance than in previous years .

I know alot of folk who are turned off not only by the entry price ($20 for the grand final i think ), which is alot of money to pay to stand up all day, especially in the rain and now $4 a beer etc. If you get to lancefield before 9am you might get a park but after that Im pretty sure you have to park down the back or out the front somewhere. Last week at Romsey I went to the TAB at half time of the two's and forgot to get a passout, upon entry I was accosted by one of the rdfl gestapo who treated me like a felon, it was only upon showing her my betting slip that she believed I had left the ground, I even offered to show her where my car was parked (on the wing ), still no respite. Lucky the romsey prez walked past and collaborated my story. Very greedy of you RDFL. Good Luck Diggers.

Romsey were pretty happy with the attendance that they got on the weekend, perhaps the same size as the Semi Finals combined but that was to be expected given the horrendous conditions. Lancefield suffered dramatically with that day given the weather that either stopped people going and or kept them in their cars and not going to the canteen.. they would've been lucky to make any profit. Playing on the best grounds? Absolutely.. the debate and change of venues to play on the best surfaces right throughout the finals series has been crucial.. perhaps venues have been decided on the conditions of the ground, not the practicality of the arena which is probably a good thing.. it's been a challenge for John and Scott this year.. not every new team can walk into a league that is in debt, no previous experience or involvement with the league in general and turn things around so well.. it's a near impossible job but they've managed to get the league into a profitable position, REGARDLESS of the figure, increase promotion and work to sustain a great league for the future.. 2011 will be the best year that the RDFL has had in the last few years as things look promising already..
