I would hate to know the hours I accumulated playing footy on my own when I was bored as a kid. Roost ball or handball into the air encouraging the ball to spin on or bounce back, then it's play on baby, hit the ball at pace, score a goal in the most elaborate fashion possible.

It was more an after school activity for me than a weekend thing, unless I was staying at the old boys place where he had four perfectly aligned trees in the front yard to be the goal posts.

This is how I self taught my self to play footy when I first moved here. Brought over a cricket kit and the stumps were gradually made into goal posts.

Grew up not far from our local club oval and primary school, had lots of brothers and heaps of cousins in the same area, was always someone to kick with after school on non training night's.

When my youngest sister started "big kid" primary school (there's a decent age gap between us, so I was no longer in primary school), I tried to talk up how good it was, you could borrow sports equipment at lunch time etc, she got so excited and borrowed cricket gear as soon as she could because my dad and I would play cricket with her during summer.

And no one wanted to play with her.

She just sat there all lunch time with a plastic cricket bat, ball and wickets before returning them at the end of lunch.

She never borrowed sports equipment again.

Almost 20 years later and I still get upset thinking about it

With the strides that have been made in women’s sport lately, you’d hope that wouldn’t be the case these days.

When I was in high school we had this girl move to the school who was from the country. Grew up on a farm and was tall and athletic.

For a novelty (that's what it was back then) they did a girls footy comp at the school for each house colour.

She dominated

She grew up playing sport with her brothers, so she would go in the ruck, win the tap, get the clearance and boot it to half forward.

From there she would either win it again and boot it deep, or sometimes roost a goal from 50 out.

Makes me wonder how she would have gone if there was a WAFLW or AFLW setup back then.

She ended up playing for the Western Fury but didn't progress very far as she was a bowler and started developing back issues.

What could have been if there was women's sport more available back then

Kids are still campaigners to other kids, albeit somewhat less campaignery than they used to be.

Don't get depressed when you turn 30. Just remember that that is the youngest you will ever be for the remainder of your life.

Turning 30 for me was definitely a threshold for the commencement of the slow deterioration of physical capability in sports. It started when I noticed I was half a metre slower running between wickets than I used to be.
Don't get me started on what happens post-40.
