Just did a bit of Googleing and like what I see.
I know his record of 70-odd goals from 60-odd games doesn't sound that impressive BUT don't forget that most of those would have been scored recently, everyone starts at square one.

" Brett O’Hara played a lone-hand in the ruck for the Eagles with over 30 hit outs, though most were uncontested, while Robert Shirley provided plenty of drive from the backline. Forward Matthew Stokes was pushed into defence and was the only one who put in a relentless effort with over 20 touches and close to ten rebound 50s." (SANFL GF, WW-T got smashed)

"Lively Matthew Stokes booted seven from a forward pocket in one of the great finals efforts of recent times.

His haul included three late in the fourth after he'd been off the ground for much of the quarter following a solid knock to his shin.

Stokes is just one of the many dangers to Central's long-standing finals supremacy over the Eagles and will be an important player when the two flag favourites compete in this Sunday's all-important Second Semi-Final at AAMI Stadium, where a week off and a Grand Final berth beckons for the victor." (QF earlier that year)

"Matthew Stokes continued his impressive game, while Jeffries, Robert Shirley and Vincenzo Rugolo worked hard to keep the Eagles in the hunt."

"Talented Brad Symes, the Gowans brothers and Daniel Healy will be pitted against Eagles’ Matthew Stokes, Gavin Colville and Paul Inkster in an electricfying tussle on the beautiful Adelaide Oval."

"and found a string of willing gatherers in best afield Matthew Stokes..." (rd2 2005)

"On-baller Matthew Stokes relished the hot conditions and dominated the midfield, kicking three goals." (rd.3)

"Late goals by Mark Passador and the exciting Matthew Stokes sealed an interesting last quarter when the crowd came to light on the back of the resurgent 'Legs. Luke Powell, Mathew Stokes, Peter Fiacchi and Chris Knights were the dominant ball movers for the evening, and Josh King a good forward target who finished off good work up the ground kicking three of his own." (rd.9)

"Chris Knights was getting useful second half footy, as was P Fiacchi, Powell came into the game, and Matthew Stokes was a nuisance with his zip." (rd.10)

And on and on it goes. I was wondering why we drafted this bloke. This seems to explain it! Time will tell, but well done boys on a good late pick.
