I was thinking that this year would be the Year of Phil Read.

Bit of a shock!:confused:

Small Defenders are something that we lack and it looks like we have to turn Adkins, Humm or Munro into that type of player.

There would have been a lot of interest in Nicoski as he had an excellent year and maybe it was decided to take him now rather than risk losing him. Beeck has improved heaps this year and if he can keep improving will be a good KPP.

The Tigers were interested in Read but I don't think they had a decent player to swap and we certainly didn't want a fourth round pick as I doubt if we will use the one we have.

Where would Nicoski have been going? He was on a two year contract.
 
Phil Read

Settle down people. Phil's manager (Jim Tsalagis (Spelling?) was just on 6PR and he said that Read has been in conversation with the club for months. He said Phil was the one who wanted a change but a trade could not be done. The club has elevated Nicoski and Zac to the senior list. Read was also on big money and obviously has not been worth it over the past two years due to injury. I hope he gets picked up by someone else. Much as I like him, I don't really think he will be missed too much.
(Hope the Dorkers pick him up - wouldn't that upset the ferals in purple :D )

Why would you have a Rookie on a two year contract? Rookies are generally taken on a year by year basis.

I'm fairly certain that even rookie listed players have to be given a minimum two year contract.

Not entirely true. Zac Beeck has been on our list for 3 years. The thing is rookies are free to nominate for the draft if they are not elevated and he might have done that.
 
It's all academic now anyway as he has been elevated but I would have thought after such a good year Nicoski would have been picked up by someone if the club hadn't elevated him.

Has Nicoski bulked up this year? His statistics on AwFuL.com have him at 186cm and only 73kg which is 2kg lighter than Munro.

Id say from what ive seen he is a little bigger, but he still has work to do. Still is a bit too light to be a consistent AFL player.
 
He has bulked up. He weighs around 84 at the moment. He has been on a program all year, and West Coast have put him on a specialised weights program during the pre season, so he has definitely bulked up some more.

I'm surprised at Read's delisting

He's one of the guys in the AFL who brought natural aggression onto the field.

You see so many players try to manufacture aggression these days, that when a bloke has it naturally, they tend to stand out.

All the best to the guy, hopefully someone will pick him up, he deserves another go
 
I am astonished. Maybe his Manager was holding out for more $$$$$$ and the Club gave them an ultimatum. Then the deadline came and it was ta ta's.

I think this was not necessary as it just depletes our depth.
 
Well, IMO Read might have been an important player in the team if he could maintain his fitness, and more importantly learn to control his aggression on the field. Too many times his aggression is misdirected and he gives away stupid free kicks.
Reading between the lines based on the info Vicki provided it may well be that he wanted out because he would no longer be receiving the money he was on. And as the club is now moving toward performance based contracts then he was not justified big money on his performances over the last two years. Particularly if his form could not guarantee him a spot in the 22 each week. I note that someone suggested a few weeks back that several eagles players had objected to being dropped during the year. Wonder if they were Haynes and Read?
As for Munro, IMO he is a very talented player who should be retained and who I expect will eventually become a regular player. He has a good long, accurate kick, can take a good mark and has pace......what more do you want?
Incidentally there is a trade off between being fast and elusive and being built like a brick outhouse. The ideal build for modern footy is that of Andrew Embley.......tallish, fast, and athletic with good skills. IMO Munro is not that far away.
 
Disappointed by the news. Obviously there is something more to it but I dont think we will ever find out what happens behind closed doors. Best of luck to him in the future, I thought he deserved one more year to prove himself but Im not in charge am I, hope he finds a home.

Kane Munro

I agree with Hamburger -I think Kane has all the attributes to be an AFL footballer -except for his lack of size. Although one of our greatest Eagles ever was also a little on the skinny side! Dean Kemp!I'm sorry Phil has gone but I would prefer Kane anyway.
 
De-listed Read pins hope on draft

DE-LISTED West Coast midfielder Phil Read is almost certain to nominate for the national draft next month after being told his 74-game career with the Eagles was over.

Read got the bad news from coach John Worsfold yesterday, a day after his 24th birthday.

He admitted last night it had come as a shock, though he had prepared himself after the Eagles offered him as a trade.

"It has been in the back of my mind but all the meetings and talks with the coaches at the end of the season seemed to have been positive," he said.

"I'm only 24 and still pretty keen to play on."

Read has two lifelines, the national draft and the pre-season draft in December.

Worsfold said the decision to de-list Read was difficult but part of the process of turning over the player list.

"I think Phil has done extremely well to fight back after two knee reconstructions," he said.

"But he is out of contract and we need to pick up some young players. We felt we had to move on and that we could cover his loss.

"Having said that, I think Phil can still play some good AFL football.

"He played some pretty good football for us this year and dominated when he went back to the WAFL."

Read made his AFL debut in round one of 1998 and missed only two games that year.

He finished ninth in the club's best and fairest and was named rookie of the year.

He played 23 games in 1999 and 19 in 2000, but suffered a serious knee injury in an Ansett Cup match in 2001.

Worse followed when he did the other knee at training before the start of the 2002 season.

He worked hard to regain his spot in the team in 2003 and played 11 games, including the last seven.

West Coast also announced yesterday that rookies Mark Nicoski, 19, and Zac Beeck, 21, had been elevated to the senior list and emerging star Ashley Sampi had re-signed.

Nicoski, an impressive left-footer, played 21 senior games with Subiaco this year, including the grand final. He is 186cm and plays mainly off a half-back flank or wing.

Beeck, 197cm, is an emerging young ruckman held in high regard by the Eagles. He has been given time to develop at East Perth, where this year he had to step into the shoes of the experienced Ryan Turnbull.

I can see Ready fitting in really well down at Freo. Would love to have him.

Apparently they're after some new punching bags for the gym...
 
I was shocked at the decision. I thought Munro or Morrison would have gone before Read. Still, we trust Woosha to know what he is doing, so I hope he made the right decision.

Bad Luck Phil, hope you get picked for another club.
 
I thought he was very unlucky, I would have thought Josh Wooden was in trouble after falling out of favour. Can anyone tell me what is contract situation is?

had to have been due to a bit of salary cap pressure, otherwise it seems stupid to me.

Maybe not so much salary cap pressure for next season, because from all reports we were doing allright, but maybe it's with the future in mind and the club may be looking to sign a big name in next years trading period and the reason we didn't in this one was because there really wasn't anyone of major interest to us.........just a thought.
