Ryley Dunn (Murray Bushrangers)

Tenacious 184/83 mid-age physical, high-flying right foot (dual-sided) utility. Genuine footballer with very wide range of attributes.

Mid-age 6 footer who gets healthy stats, can play tallish or short, and attacks both man and ball. Extremely versatile. Not always great disposal but is often under pressure from getting own ball, especially hbg. Will be serious AFL player. Worth very early pick. I rank him at 5 on my list. Plug 'n play.

*STYLE LIKE: Archer or a taller Campbell Brown.

*TRADEMARK:

1. Courageously crashing the pack to try for a seriously huge mark, then running on hard.
2. Tackle multiple opponents in succession.

*SUMMARY ASSESSMENT, RECOMMENDATION:

Decision-making and disposal not always great but will be serious AFL player anyway. At AFL, could possibly play any non-key role.
Very tight, disciplined but not afraid to leave opponent.
Plays much taller than his height.
Runs hard. Excellent work rate & intensity. Great on 1%ers.
Courageous, ferocious, tenacious.
Is crash 'n bash but clean, smart. Plays like a leader.
Is a good kid, very coachable.
Good kick for depth, good pace, good smarts, very tenacious. Wins his own ball.

*DISPOSAL, DECISION-MAKING, SMARTS:

- Has genuine smarts. A footballer's footballer.
- Gets his own ball. A specialist hard ball getter who is good in close, good over the ball and can split packs to get the pill.
- Reads both the play and the ball very well and has good poise and awareness.
- Not always great disposal but he is often under pressure from getting own ball.
- Is a thumping kick, capable of 60m. Not a reliable kick for goal but can get a thumping set goal from outside 50m, often off a run up of only 2-3 paces. Kicking accuracy, in general, is not his strong point and needs to improve. Sometimes tends to bang the ball onto his boot, going for depth instead of looking for options, but that is not a major concern. Mainly disposes by foot and usually kicks long, direct.
- Sometimes inclined to bump instead of tackle. Occasionally inclined to let opponent go for it then nail him (I'd rather see him go for the ball himself in most such situations).
- Sometimes tries to do too much and either gets nailed or puts himself under unnecessary pressure.
- Inclined to go for too many low percentage speccies (esp from behind).
- Is a natural leader. Shows leadership at huddles and encourages team mates on the ground.

*HANDS:

- Clean.

*OVERHEAD MARKING:

- Contested marking is one of his best attributes - leap, soft hands, one grab. Attacks his marks with gusto. Doesn't miss marks that he could reasonably be a chance of getting (although he is inclined to go for too many low percentage speccies). Judges flight well.

*ATHLETICISM, INTENSITY, ETHIC, CONSISTENCY:

- Has huge leap, even coming from nowhere and/or out of position or standing vertical jump. Can be virtually half a body length higher than the pack.
- Cat-like recovery and balance.
- Not lightning off the mark but has very good pace over ground and loves a dash, often through traffic. Has another gear. Runs hard, covers ground.
- Draft Camp tests indicate only soso endurance but I suspect he was burnt out as he shows endurance in games. I would expect these tests to yield much better results pre-season or in a season where he is stationed at an AFL club instead of having to travel all the time to part-time training and coming off a gruelling TAC GF in terrible conditions just a few days earlier.
- Magnificent intensity. Very physical. Fierce tackler, blocker. Will charge 25m to a marking contest for a huge leap thumping punchaway over the pack. Attacks both man and ball with great intensity. Takes no prisoners. Does many non-stats things - great workrate in close especially, 1%s, fights v hard under packs, delivers bumps, fierce tackler. Especially big on one percenters. 2nd efforts are almost a trademark - eg will tackle 3 consecutive opponents, hardly breaking stride.
- Is a fearless desperado, a danger to both opponents and himself. Is not intimidated.

*SCI (SCOPE FOR CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT):

- He is physical mature and mid-age. However, a typical Bushies kid has a lot of scope for improvement due to the travel and difficulty of training together often enough in their region. Full-time and handy to AFL resources, this kid will thrive.

*AFL VERSATILITY:

High. Best initial AFL role is probably defender on either a mid or small but he could become a good AFL run-with or an onballer in his own right and can pinch-hit elsewhere. Is almost equal competence in both defence and attacking areas. Is capable of blanketing an opponent or of playing an attacking role. His natural tendency is a blend of both.

*QUERY:

- Kicking accuracy.

*SOME STATS:

- TAC: Averaged 23 disposals in 18 TAC games (24th in comp). 4.6 marks, 5.1 tackles, total 9 goals-16. At least 25 disposals in 10 games. 65% of disposals (similar to last year) are kicks. (Players of his type are usually around 60%). 20% of his possessions are marks. At least 6 marks in 7 games. At least 6 tackles in 6 games. 9 or more tackles in 3 games.

Mid-way trend: Similar pattern to last year - Disposals were down 8% (24 to 22) but tackles were up 22% (4.6 to 5.6), and at least 25 disposals in each of his first 9 games but in only 4 of his last 9 2nd biggest game in his last 5 was only 18d (although biggest was 32 and in a final). (Some Bushies kids tend to fall away late season because they can't get the conditioning into them that city kids can get and they get worn out by travel, especially at finals time travelling to Melbourne every week).

- Stats summary '03 U18 Champs:
3 U18 Champs games 2003 averaging 16 disposals (5 marks) - 12 (3), 18 (6), 19 (6).
Kicks vs feeds: heavily favouring kicks. 34-13. Adding in '02 comes to 54-25. Similar pattern to his TAC.
Tackles: 9
S.P. clearances: 11 incl 4 cbc
Gets own ball?: Definitely. 7/49 TD were HR. 7 HBG
Kicks long vs short: mixed
Kicking accuracy: 5/38 were ineff/clang incl 2 clang
Handball accuracy: 4/15 were ineff.
Marking: 15 (incl 3 contested)

*OTHER STUFF:

- All Australian 2002 U18 Champs as 16yo, despite not even being picked for first Vic Country trial.
- Unplaced in club B&F '03 despite big stats and playing 18 games.
- 9 votes '03 Morrish Medal (polled in 4 games).
- 16 votes Coaches Award (4 games).

Disposal not great, decision making not great, speed of the mark not great....

Actually, I have seen Dunn play a few times on some of his good days, and Archer is the first comparison that sprung to my mind too. He has a fantastic overhead mark and has more courage than is good for him. Dunn would have been comparable to Beau Waters (Pick 11) if he hadn't managed to get injured so much.

Kicking accuracy Iffy ? hell, he'd go well at Essendon then :D

Doesn't seem to be the same fellow we got.
Going back over some of the stuff you keep in the bottom draw and I noticed the draft report that said one of the best over 5M.
Then I saw him play for EF and was amazed by his lack of pace. About as fast as my mom running backwards.
Jeez I hope he comes good. Heaven knows we need someone to improve.
The way our injury list is going he might be a chance to get a game soon.
