You should never stop rebuilding... Every year from now on we should be using our picks for the future. No more quick fix players, as Fremantle and the Saints have shown it doesn't work.

West Coast is a very good example as well. Won a GF 18 months ago and are now using the rebuilding word so to speak, even though they have a very young overall squad, and a lot of grand final players still in the team.

The west coast example is a bit different with the cousins situation and loosing Judd in the one year. But they wont be down for too long.

Yeh, and tomorrow never comes as well !!
Ever heard the other little gem 'drawing a line in the sand' ????????

You rebuild to achieve something.....in essence 'the final build'.

So when do we pause for a second and say 'rebuilding' has stopped as an action, and an excuse?......and we are ready to play and win.

It was either David Parkin or Micky Malthouse who said (can't remember the person), that no matter what state the club or playing list is in, you must be ready to win NOW!

Were we ready to win last year???? or the year before that or the year before that.

"Continue building" once you get the list to a high standard. What I dont want to see is quick fix recruiting and topping up the list.

Just keep quality kids coming through from the bottom. Maybe trade a player every now and then for picks.

Agree.

Its west coast strategy. They only ever trade players in who are homesick and when they trade out it is always for draft picks.

id like to see as the older players such as Richo, Kane etc retire in the next 5 years that we pick up some older players (27-30) just to provide leadership and take the pressure off the young kids...only to replace those that have left
if it was just the kids then id be worried...as good as they are an older head amongst them will i reckon let them grow more

AMEN. It's the reason why Hawthorn are where they are now, where we should be. No more quick-fixes, giving away picks. Even though we did have a good draft this year, we still didn't fully capitalize & once again couldn't help ourselves in giving up pick 19 for McMahon. Yes McMahon will be serviceable, but much rather back ourselves and recruit future young guns, not play it safe and go for the band-aid approach that we have a history of doing.

GO TIGES!!!

27-30 is now the age AFL players start thinking about retiring. See Wirrpanda, Rowan Jones etc. By the time Richo and co have retired, Deledio, Foley, Tambling and co will all have over 100 games and Thursty, Moore, Riewoldt and co will be well on their way and will be destroying oppositions.

That's exactly the line of thinking that got us in this mess. The very last thing we should be doing. You fail. :thumbsd:

I think this is a fair comment except I'd change the 27-30 to 24-27 as the game is getting so fast players 28-30 are increasingly under the pump unless they are injury free and super fit freaks.

After Harvey , Richo , Simpson , Everitt and co retire I don't think we'll see to many players over the age of 31 in the comp. These older players don't seem to be as dominant as in previous years.

Dont think he's disagreeing with you... more a sarky way of him saying that you're stating the obvious!

Problem is... our list has been so shit, that we've only now got it into a reasonable position.

:)There is nothing wrong with recycling players from other clubs, it's getting the RIGHT ONES which count.
History will tell us recruiting the likes of Ben Marsh, Knobel, Hudson, Houlihan, Fleming, Morrison, Nicholls, Blumfield etc. were poor moves.
Blind Freddy at the time of drafting thsoe guys could have told you they were going to be poor decisions, yet we did it.
We've had our success stories - Broderick, Michael Gale, Chris Bond and even Mark Graham was serviceable, knowing it was going to be a one year thing.

spot on duster. Its all about balance...keep rebuilding with the youngsters, but when "that" player that you really want and really see as needed in the overall scheme of things comes up, you get him.
Every top team has that component in the mix. The cats went for Cam Mooney, to solve a problem, ie. hard, tough, rough, marking KPP, that they saw as a required ingredient, come the time when they made the run for the flag. Eagles? Stenglein anyone? They needed a hard tag and when he was available they swooped, even though alot would have thought, WTF, he did a job that they wanted him to do and flag in the bag. Dawks? well..how about Croad?...the bulldogs? Welsh? ....at the end of the day, you dont go out and do a Spud.....you only need the one, maybe two, and you dont have to take them, for the sake of taking them. You wait and swoop when the stars align. ;)

I totally agree with the opening thread.

If you continually pick the best youngsters in the land you will eventually have a team of champions. A good coach will turn that into a champion team.

Of course not all your picks will come to fruition, but then again, that allows culling of the bad picks after 3 to 4 years of observation. This culling then makes room (together with retirements) on the list for the next set of gun youngsters. Your recruiting team's ability to pick the best talent is paramount.

Teams now should only trade draft picks for under 22 year old types that are disgruntled at their former club or homesick. Otherwise the club would not let a potentially good player go and so most likely you would end up with a dud.

It seems so easy, but teams continually get ahead of themselves and think they are just one or two players off a premiership. History has shown that to be a lethal way of thinking with very few teams achieving success in that manner (Geelong with Mooney and Ottens is one of those anomalies).

We cannot afford to stray down this path again. Others have quoted Broderick and Gale and Chris Bond as successful examples but I would argue as good as these boys were, none of them brought back a premiership cup back to punt road. And there is the lesson. Even getting one good player isn't going to bring success. Usually this has meant trading multiple draft picks or very high draft picks. Those acquiring the picks are able to collect a group of youngsters and bring them through the system together. North in the 90's, Brisbane and Geelong more recently have shown the power of bringing a group of youngsters through at the same time.

NO MORE SHORT CUTS RICHMOND!!!!! Continue with the current youth policy forever and success WILL come.

Brisbane - Alistair Lych
Geelong - Cam Mooney
North - Wayne Carey

before that - Hawthorn - dunstall

after that Swans - hall
eagles - Lynch

The pattern is there...for all to see.
You are either lucky and pick them up as youngsters or you go out and get what you need...a ____ing goal kicker who wins matches
The end. ;)

Midfields win you flags these days.

naaa they get it to those that do a hell of alot of times and those that do, dont miss a hell of alot of times.
The age old formula still keeps on keeping on dude. Midfields yeah....but when it comes to winning you the flags....the spine is the single most important line on the field. You have that then you dont have to go wide and across and all over the ____ing ground to find a way. You go down the middle because thats where its at. ;)

I can remember how all danced around with joy when we got Blumfield for pick 33ish. Morrison was going to be the Next Jonathan Brown. There must of been a few Blind freddies around then.

Carey and Dunstall??

Ok Cogga, our club is the best example of having a champion up forward and having zero success!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Matthew Richardson has been our " ____ing goal kicker" and where the hell has it got us? And before you jump up and down to say they were better goal kickers than Richo, the great man averages more goals per game than Carey.

Your logic is flawed. You put up cases from the 80's and 90's when the draft was still in its infancy and clubs were regularly trading their best picks. Anyhow, Carey and his team mates came through the under 19s and Hawthorn drafted Dunstall from Queensland, just as I suggested teams should do!

You must continually draft good young players period!!!!

like i suggested...you can pick them or you can get them if you have missed the boat...when you do miss the boat and you have a group of youngsters ready to make the push...then you improvise...if you dont, you miss the boat and are left waiting for something that you are hoping.

You must continually draft good players is a kind of simpletons view of the planet...why? because as the form guide suggests...you simply cant...

You are purely reacting to the shitness of the spud...i.e polarising your thoughts on a shit coach who went out and got shit players. All top sides do what is nessecary to get the the chocolates when they havent got the total mix. If you have a gun that emerges as you make your way to the top...then you are good...if you havent got one that emerges and you are making your way to the top, you look and see at who is available and if they fit the bill, you pounce and fill that hole. Because when that window opens, you have to be ready. ;)
