I dont know about you guys... but after the recruiting disasters from 2001 - 2004 and the fact that during those years we also turned over just about every experienced player we had and recruited a lot of duds and spuds... I feel that the club is feeling that it is in a position of strength where we can actually recruit for the future.

Back in the bad old days, with the smattering of older and more experienced players in the side we had to rush through the youngsters and blood them a lot sooner and have them playing more games than was necessary.

We are now in a position where we can recruit talented youngsters and let them develop at a slower pace than we have had to in the past. It doesnt matter if it takes a youngster a couple of years to break into the side now, because we have a group of players ahead of them who they would be fighting against to displace anyway. I'm happy to see the guys we picked up last year and this year start off slower than we had Murphy, Gibbs and Kreuzer start off at.

The best example of this is Yarran. He has been slowly developing over the last 3 years. He played 6 games in his first season and everyone one bagging him as a dud and proclaiming from behind their keyboards like all good internet warriors, that we should have taken Rich. After this last season, all the detractors have disappeared and everyone is proclaiming that the recruiting staff got it right and we have something very special in this young man.

So... for all you armchair recruiters and internet warriors out there who are bagging the guys we picked with #22 and #44... give it a rest. One is our future and the other one is ready made to help us bring home #17 and put us back out on the top of the premiership winners list again.

If you cant handle the thought that the club is making all the right moves NOW so that we can not only bring home #17, but also bring home #18, #19 and #20 then there is something seriously wrong with your thought trains and you need to sit back and look at the future.

Right now... I am about to head off for a nice cold shower because I have just gotten really excited thinking about all those lovely premierships we can win over the next 8-10 years :D

Spot on Dramoth,
Good things take time.
We've had to wait a little longer than most of us would like to have waited, but we have been planning for the future, which is looking extremely bright.
We continue to add pieces to the premiership puzzle which is nearly complete!
The future is bright and I for one cant wait for this successful period for us over the next 10 years!!!

I reckon BigFooty should have a Name and Shame thread listing all those who paid out on Yarran when we quite rightly choose him over Rich. It'd be hilarious. Might be a bit too hot to handle who this internet ad-click website with it's well known Essendon/Collingwood traffic motivated bias.

What I love about our great club is they a) ignore the media and b) ignore popular opinion and c) ignore what non-Carlton clubs think when we make our list management decisions. This is why we're the most successful club in the AFL.

I was somewhat disappointed last night when first hearing who we had selected. Though I didn't rant and rave about it on here.
After a sleep and a good hard think about what eventuated last night, I am pleased with the outcome. After all, if we selected another player in place of bootsma, would they get a game next season anyways???

Most people wanted a hard, in and under midfielder that can free up Judd/Murphy and others. I get that. But I doubt an 18 year old would get a spot in the team atm.

I have looked through another thread on here (best 22 for 2012) and don't recall seeing McLean's name too many times, nor Curnow's name. This inside mid would be to replace one of these, but it wasn't going to happen in 2012.

Our backline stocks are at an all time high. We now have the luxury of letting Yarran, Gibbs, Russell, Tuohy (to name a few) move into the middle. Let Russell and Tuohy do some of the tougher work, while Yaz and Gibbs show there smooth skills and damaging passes. So taking Bootsma now gives us that little more depth

Lucas is another player that wasn't in the team really last year and many don't believe he is in our best 22. I on the other hand believe he will slide in an make 2012 his break out year.

How many more mids do we need???

The drafting of Bootsma (love that name) will allow a gradual apprenticeship over the next few years and hopefully become what we drafted him to be. A stopper with great closing speed, clean disposal on both sides and hopefully an all round good guy that plays a team game.

Rowe, at 24 years of age. Is that something extra that we didn't have this year. He is still young and if he steps up from the level he has been at (maybe like a pods) we have a 6year + forward.

Carlton must believe that the forward line is in pretty good shape really. No need for a youngen right now, when our window is open. We have seen how good Geelong are when Pods plays a half decent game.

Our forward line big men are now Mitchell, Waite, Casboult, Hampson, Henderson, Kreuzer, Warnock, Rowe and who knows McCarthy or Watson might float in from time to time (yes they are backmen) but anything is possible this day and age in football.

I think it was a good draft for us (though many won't). We are all about premierships here at Carlton. We are close. Trust me;)

Let's hope that Rowe can be our J-pod and hit the ground running. I thought we had Mitchell who could've slotted in but maybe its better to let him develop patiently and a guy like Sam can cope with the demands of being an AFL KP in 2012

I hate to intone discordantly into this little pit of sickly sweetness but surely pick 44 proves how bad our recruiting is right now.

I mean, either Sam Rowe is a ready-made CHF (and I might be just a little bit excited by the prospect myself) in which case WTF was he "allowed" to not come to us last year as a rookie. The Blues of old would not have let finishing some crappy apprenticeship stand in the way of getting their man.

Or, alternatively, Sam Rowe is just another rehash of a steady stream of talls that have been recruited and failed. When will WH ever learn?

As far as I can see Sam Rowe gives WH knockers a free hit, however he goes.:)

Weak draft. Rowe is no guarantee and nor would you expect him to be at pick 44. He fills a need and provides depth in an area we had trouble in last season.

I'm not sure that forcing him to come last year would have been the best move to call upon his loyalty in the future if required.

Remember too that we started last year with Henderson as our CHF prospect. Injuries to Jamo, Waite and Bower meant throwing around our team. We also had recruited forward prospect Luke Mitchell but he also got injured again.

We were probably found out for decent key position depth in 2011 so the natural reaction is to shore that up further. We can't have a lack of depth in one position stuffing up our chances when the rest of the team is flying.

At pick 44, who cares how we got there? It is probably a nit picking exercise to try to find fault with Hughes more than anything.

Fair answer ODN. He was "allowed" to come, he chose to finish his apprenticeship. We liked him last year for the depth and structure he provides on our list, we like him this year.

Except that I would say my post was certainly nit-picking (and without a nit to pick) I agree entirely ODN. And also that I want him playing at CHF in round 1 against the tiges.

I don't know what to do when they 'fess up right away. I need some guidance.

The :) was meant to give me away completely, if the whole tenor of my ridiculous swipe at WH had not already reduced my credibility to zero.

Sorry, I usually look for the ;) ... and then it is hard to pick out satire sometimes when serious posts are often more outlandish than the satire. You know how it goes.

Oddly though, for me the best example of us being single minded with our recruiting, was when we selected Duigan last year.
It showed maturity, self-assurance and drafting with a clear objective.
Yes, Geelong got in first with Podsiadly but I loved that move last year, before I had even known who Duigan was.
Two training sessions later and it all became obvious.

We're not drafting in fear of being wrong any more. We're drafting with purpose and faith in our coaching group.

I was talking about recruiting and letting them develop at a slower pace than we did when we recruited Gibbs and Murphy.

Now we have the luxury of being able to recruit a more mature aged player and let our kids develop slowly. We arent trying to get in a bunch of mature aged players to win us a flag next year. We believe that we have all the pieces in the puzzle now and with the recruitment of Rowe, it allows Casboult and Mitchell to spend at least 1 more year in development before they are expected to step up.

I love where the club is now because it bodes well for a very bright future and many more premierships.

I hear what you're saying and that is a great position for us to be in.
We've held onto players O'Keeffe, Casboult and Carter giving them every chance to develop in the full scope of time, yet we got all dirty when Setanta was let go.
We will now recruit another 3 rookies, so next year will be even more difficult when it comes to having to delist.
If Scotland decides to go another year and White, Bower and Thornton have good years, what do we do?

I would suggest trading for players we want (goddard) lol. Or trading to upgrade draft picks. We are in a good position really.

Think most of our "recruiting for the future" was done last draft. We did unbelievably well in that draft and loaded up, probably because we knew this years draft was going to be the weakest of them all, and it was. Looking forward to seeing McInnes debut. Was impressed with his first up effort in the pre-season 1/2 game V Failurewood. He played through the midfield and wing and a bit in defence. Big, skilful and quick with some excellent attack on the footy in that game. Will be interesting to see whether we develop him as a defender or more of a tall utility type. Hoping the latter. Carter's another one to watch this season. He's very quick and is an excellent kick, and showed a few signs. Could be another Curnow-like surprise. Who knows.

:)
