Recruiting Targets Summary

Watching Stanley in yesterday's game has put me off him indefinitely.

Sadly looks like a player not really wanting to play there. I wouldnt completely discount him though, I seem to remember many other 'spud-like' players (Schulz, Ebert, Polec, White) that didnt look flash in their last year before moving to Port.

3rd rounder at best tho'.

Might want to be cautious with Trengove.

Over on the Melbourne board they tend to think his body is shot. I mean, he can't even get a game in the 1's atm.

Top summary Schulzenfest

I can't help but feel that a fit Shaun Higgins is tailor-made for Ken Hinkley football. Elite forward, back or through the midfield he wins his own footy and uses it to great effect. I'm not sure how realistic it is that the Doggies would let him go or that of all the clubs he could chose he'd go to an interstate team. I just reckon he'd look great in the black, white and teal. He plays the way I'd hope Gibbs would if we picked him up.

Speaking of a perfect fit, Adam Tomlinson - Yes please!

On the Melbourne board they seem to think they might let Trengove go. If we could get him without using our first pick that'd be a bigger coup then Polec.

Scott Lycett would be a handy depth ruckman, if he comes cheap (3rd round or less), he's far better than Renouf. I don't rate him up forward whatsoever though, he'll never be able to play in the same side as Lobbe.

Haren seems like a no brainer. If the draft was to be held tomorrow I reckon we'd pick him up for sure. From my limited viewing he just seems to move so well for a big guy, in fact, too well to not be on an AFL list. Where do the regular Magpie watchers see him playing? A KPF who can ruck or a KPD?

Probably better suited to KPF, but the beauty of picking up a guy like Haren as depth is that he's competent at both. If we'd picked up, say, Joel Tippett last year we would only have added depth in one position, but Haren can play anywhere. Reminds me a bit of a poor man's Westhoff (which is no slight on him because Westhoff is a star).

I don't think Gibbs would provide the bang for buck so to speak. We could get an equal player in output for less IMO. His name is driven by draft pick selection.

Tomlinson would clearly be speculative but he could be another swing man type player we could do with. Forward who could run in the midfield.

How long does Butcher get persisted with or do we offer him and our first round pick to GWS for Tomlinson and their first round pick of 13 who was a forward? McCarthy?

I'm happy to persist with Butcher but could see a strategy of using him to upgrade also.

I voted Tomlinson and Haren. IMO our most pressing list need* is a more 'ready to go at AFL level' KPF than Butcher/Shaw/Harvey. After that, having an actually useful ruck backup for Lobbe/Redden ie a bloke who can ruck and contribute to KP depth at both ends of the ground sounds like a very sensible investment to me. It actually sounds like a description of (our!) Trengove.

Like Higgins as a footballer (and for SC), definitely fits the Ken Hinkley gameplan, would be much better value than the Gibbs of the world and give us more on field than the Greenwoods of the world. He's also one of those where his next injury could always be his last and just on the wrong side of the age profile for mine, would be 27 before he got here and if his body holds up this year would have only just managed to get to 130 ish games in that time. So if Ken wants him, Darren Burgess to have the final say.

* roles where we don't have ready candidates in the twos striving for opportunity - rather than 'kids in development'

Rookie list Haren (Ruck) and Raikiwasa (KP Defender)
Get Johansen (small forward) with a 4th round pick (his thumb injury will hurt his draft chances)

If we can get Lycett with a 2nd rounder (3rd if we are lucky) that would cover the extra senior listed ruck and/or fwd that we need.

Then draft best available with our 1st and 3rd rounders.

Lewis Johnston? Didn't know people were thinking about him..

Seriously don't rate the guy (all bar his goal kicking) - his defensive pressure is horrendous and ken would eat him alive. Seems to have a bit of a lazy attitude which is the opposite of what we want. I know the players can change but I really don't think he is one we should be targeting

Raikawasa is yet another 191cm defender which we already have in bucketloads, and at 21 years old he can't even get a game for the Magpies seniors at the moment despite the fact that Clurey is the only proper key defender in the side. People need to let this one go. He'll never be a Power player, and nor should he be.

Tomlinson was a late in for GWS on the weekend, replacing Mumford. The GWS-Bulldogs game kind of overlapped with ours so I didn't see any of it, but according to the reviews on the GWS board he had a pretty ordinary day. Have seen him before and thought there was a bit about him, so one match definitely isn't indicative of his full capabilities, but it's food for thought.

Good good, drop his value a lil more please

5 minutes with Ken and he'll be tackling line a hungry bear.

Tomlinson is everything we need right now. All the other players listed would add to positions we're strong in.

We talked about the prospect of losing a quality player because they can't get a run at AFL level despite being AFL quality.

Packaging someone like Young, Stewart or Heath with our first rounder is probably still short of the mark, but might get us a bit closer to Tomlinson.

Tomlinson is a long shot. He's contracted until 2015 and he's from Victoria, so we'd be competing against Collingwood, St Kilda, the Bulldogs, Carlton, etc. We might be more attractive in terms of success and opportunity but they'd all be able to offer GWS more than us at this stage.

He's like.... the anti-Butcher.
Perfect goal kicking routine and pretty much a dead eye. However no defensive pressure, lacks skill on the ground and can't run out a game.

Butcher does all the pressure acts and is a pretty decent crumber but we all know what his kicking's like.

I guess if you combine the two, you get Jeremy Cameron :P

Great work there Schulzenfest, really appreciate the work you've gone to here and it's a fantastic read.
Of the guys you've mentioned I like Tomlinson the most. For mee, that next KPF is the key followed by another good ruckman which brings Lycett into the frame.
Can't see us landing Tomlinson for the exact reasons you mentioned.
Ben Haren is the interesting one but with a strong KPF draft this year he'd want to make every post a winner.
The best and most possible trade there is Lycett imo.

Tomlinson would the obvious but how much would he cost us?, I like Greenwood as a hard bodied ball getter because how long Cassisi and Cornes have left but the one theory I have is Trengove is just not interested in playing at (and in) Melbourne, He's shown skills and footy smarts but his efforts are so below AFL level that I don't buy his body is not up to it theory. He could be a possible target as he falls more out of favour and we have shown that players get a new lease on life here only prblem the cows could offer more to the Dees if not the player.

I'm not exactly for Lewis Johnston coming to us, but if that's the reason he can't come here then ****.. why did we even consider picking up 'shit attitude' Jared Polec.

im yet to see any proof that polec ever had a shit attitude once in the afl system. maybe its a myth we should put to bed now and forever unless anyone has anything other than hearsay otherwise??

seemed to have trouble staying on the park his first couple of years. seemed to want out of brisbane pretty badly as did an unusual number of other young players.

Polec himself admitted he needed a rocket (Ken).

Polec had a self confessed lack of application while at Brisbane. Some may see that as a 'shit attitude', others won't.

Johnston has had an extra couple of years in the system and has already been at 2 clubs. I think that if he had the capacity to change into a defensively minded player, we would be seeing signs/it would have happened already
