Same as the white balls used for ODIs. Those deteriorate so much that they don't even last 50 overs - which is why they use a different ball at either end, meaning each ball is only used for 25 overs.the pink ball is painted instead of being tanned like the red ball is, therefore the paint will come away
In test matches, they're only allowed to use one ball at a time, and they don't get a new ball until the old one is at least 80 overs old (or at the start of a new innings). This has the potential to be an absolute disaster.
