The only ground availability situation currently would be in Tassie with Bellerive, but North are unlikely to be still playing there for much longer. All other states have grounds they’d be able to use; SA - Karen Rolton, WA - the WACA, NSW - Cricket Central, Vic - Junction, QLD - AB field.

Also it’s not like they are competing for crowds or audiences.

The BBL situation actually makes starting earlier and finishing later make more sense.

Bellerieve is used for TSL (I think that's what Tassie's state league is called) matches in winter (Clarence play home games there).

Likewise amateur football is played at Karen Rolton Oval (and occasional junior/reserves SANFL matches)

So they’d just be used for their main tenant for longer and the ammos will be forced to play somewhere else until May. That’s a pretty easy thing to do given it’s not like it’s another professional sport that desperately needs those grounds for April fixtures.

First game Saturday.

Some interesting names in the 13

Hanno Jacobs is the SA U19 quick who headed off the Canberra to study. Ended up representing NSW but now back. A likely type.

Jerssis Wadia a left arm dart spinner (and batter). Assume he's been picked for his white ball bowling though.

Ben Manenti's bro gets a gig. Middle order batsman. Also bowls some very gentle mediums (wicket keeper up)

Hopefully we can do well this year.

Why isnt head playing. He should be our there getting some much needed centre wicket practice for coming season.

Carey always flies the SA flag

Come on Travis get out there and help the boys

The rooster fails to crow again. Unless he can turn it around he will become another who had talent who for one reason or another could not put it together when it mattered eg Tomich etc

Trav plays a lot more cricket than Kez across a year, he needs a break. I'm sure he will play the first 1 or 2 Shield games.

JFM was genuinely looking a lot more composed today and not playing reckless. First ball he mistimes and the WA fielder takes a screamer of a catch running back with the flight.

With Australia A playing and some players rested or because of bereavement or injury our lack of depth has been exposed. We need all players on the park and without Head, Carey, Scott, Sangha (for one match), Doggett, Thornton, McSweeney etc. we look very weak particularly in the batting component.

We don't appear to have any real outstanding young home grown talent coming up through the ranks unlike other states whose Under 19 cricketers from the last few years are beginning to have an impact at this level eg Vidler, Weibgen, Straker, Beardman, Dixon, Anderson, Peake, Kellaway, Oconnor, Whitney etc.

we are reliant on players from other states tryin to get another opportunity and whilst that is working this year we have not obtained too many new faces in this way too.

Yeah largely the issues that were at grade level are largely still there even after the Hussey Report.

Its not really sustainable to keep doing what we're doing IMO.

The two division model has made the grade games in Div 1 stronger. Definitely a better standard. However it seems to have been fuelled mostly by imports from interstate, overseas players and guys poached from Div 2 clubs. Also by consolidating most Redbacks squad players in the one division.

Hasn't yet impacted the quality of local kids coming though.

Not that it necessarily would in these early days of course but surely that's the end goal

If you’re comparing to tennis, he’s already won multiple grand slams.

If they’d been able to successfully reduce the total number of clubs it would have given the grade system the chance to have continued improvement.

Yep, always felt like a bit of a half measure

The junior pathway is so fragmented though. Turf and even Hard Wicket clubs have pretty good junior numbers that the district clubs just don't get to see. There's no real feeder system into the District comp, you're either in it or you're nowhere near it.

Is it?

Pathway seems better than most sports. All district clubs have open trials every season for every age group. Countless entry points.

Those doing well in turf or hard wicket juniors invariably are already playing District cricket. Unless they are actively avoiding it and don't want to play eg if other sports are their priority

Don't think the lack of talent we have is due to guns not getting noticed

Huh? They cant play in more than one comp mate.

In footy, schools and ammo clubs are asked to nominate kids to try out for league development squads. There's far more linkage between the various comps at different levels. There's practically no engagement at primary school level. The early developers will get to the district clubs, but I'd suggest there's a lot of kids getting left on the table due to lack of engagement and coaching. SACA have literally outsourced their community engagement to Elevate.
