Loved his game as a starting point for the remainder of the season. If he can find that on a more consistent basis he’s a chance to crack back into the senior team at some point. One criticism though was that handball late to Ginnivan which was dogshit and showed a lack of maturity from both. Definitely a teachable moment, but it’s the type of stuff when you’re hunting flags and the margins are tight when it comes to spots in the 23 that can prove the difference.

Very encouraging game but the reality check is it was against low quality VFL opponents…

… and the kid is still only 20.

No need to rush him given scoring is not a problem for the senior side and with mcstay due to play again soon

Keep him learning the craft and gaining consistency in the VFL

Agree with others… there should be stints on the ball too

But for mine given out ladder position, I wouldn’t be tinkering too much with the line up before finals

Just have the kids come in as sub

He's Elliott cover I think. Lead up forward who tries to get front and centre when it's bombed in.

And that lines up pretty well with the timeframe we'd expect for him to take that role from Elliott in 2 years hopefully also. Elliott has been injury prone and put his body through a lot of damage due to his courage so I wouldn't be relying on him for more than 1 or 2 more years.

Daicos has already taken care of the Pendlebury transition and Ed Allan is the hope for Sidebottom so we have some of the more urgent older players with transition plans.

I'm hoping that Reef is a regular next year rotating inside 50 and higher up the ground with Elliott.

Pretty sure next year is the timeline for regular Reef games. We pushed him early this year and will do so more next year I expect.

Main thing for him is to keep adding strength in the off season

Surely it’s to improve his tank. Can’t even get midfield minutes yet in the VFL!

I love Reef, I think he's supremely talented. He's athletic ability is off the charts. And I think he's shown enough skills to be a high quality player in the afl.

I've been waiting for him to tear apart a game like he did on the weekend. With his abilities, we should see him doing this regularly. I know he's only 20, but I've got pretty high expectations for a kid with his talent even despite his age.

Did he kick any goals from drop punts on Sunday?

I like the package but I just don’t think he’s a forward at AFL level. The sooner he starts getting a run in midfield in the VFL (or even half back) the better.

Agree with this. I'm not convinced he's a natural forward. I feel confident he could play stints up forward at the afl level.
But probably a forward of centre midfield role is more his jam.

For the impatient please consider,
1 he had virtually no TAC (development) in his draft year
2 injury setbacks early days
3 nearly the youngest in his draft (Daicos is only 3 weeks younger)

As for not playing him in the midfield, what’s the vfl for if not to try youngsters out in different position.
Winnings great but vfl focus should be on development and transition to senior footy.

Want to see him start to play predominantly midfield in the VFL.
We need to have midfield replacements for Pendles, Sidey, Mitchell ready to transition into senior side over the next 2 years.

We have our mitchell. Fin. As long as he toughens it out and stays.
Sidey could be Allan.
Pendles, hopefully reef, or Arlo( who does move and have composure like pendles, finds space where there is none)
Think Reef will be mid-forward.

His initial role in the AFL will mostly be forward it seems. Think he has tools enough for that already, but could do with greater strength in the contest. Would also help him in the middle for when he rotates through.

I think he'll probably come into the senior team this week. But next year, what's better, Reef playing seniors up forward or midfield in the VFL. I think it's easily the former, even if the longer term goal is in the midfield.

And he's not getting near the senior midfield next year.

Maybe try Reef as a starting forward, instill the trust and see if he can gain the necessary confidence.
Seems bit nervous as trying to always play for his spot in the team.
The talents there, just needs to bloom.
That's the problem when given the ultimatum of playing well or get dropped. There's just too much pressure on a young kid. You can literally see him trying too hard and it's hampering him. He just needs to relax and play his natural game.

I agree, and in previous versions of our club I could see that being the case. However, under Fly and his cohorts, I am confident that the developing lads won;t have that weight placed upon them. Instead I suspect that they will be given smaller, more manageable KPIs for a game to measure their development and progression.
In Fly we trust.

Endurance is still Miles off.

Get tired very quicky in the Midfield

Great, get him tired in the midfield. A little bit closer to the end product.

I'd say Josh is the Sidebottom equivalent and replacement, at least stylistically. Ed is the likely Mitchell replacement, who tbh I think might not last as long as we might hope, at least in comparison to the likes of Pendles and Sidey. Doesn't have the positional flexibility, and he will at some point within the next year or two find it difficult to maintain the midfield minutes he would require to stay in the team.
