That tackle he laid (2nd or 3rd quarter?) was actually one of my favourite moments of the game. I thought he improved from last week. I don’t expect him to be amazing or at the standard of Nathan Murphy, but if he plays his role each week he will be fine, then Howe and Moore will do the rest.

Agree with this except the bit about not becoming as good as murphy. I think with experience and confidence, he could be anything. He has the attributes.

That’s a big call. Murphy was only just hitting top gear when his career came to a premature end. Murphy was just starting to hit that elite level, and we would have one premiership less without him. If Reef gets near to Murphy’s quality that will go someway to easing the pain of losing one of my favourite players.

Same thing as last week, he's not giving away in free kicks from panicking in a contest. He's halving contests and positioning himself well for the most part.

No idea what happened with him and the Willie Rioli goal though I haven't watched the replay yet

And he's still in education mode. The more he plays, the more he'll understand his role and the better he'll become.

That was pure Rioli brilliance.
Pretended to run forward at the ball, Reef was readying for a tackle.
Instead Rioli let the ball run on - bang.

If he can get more games under his belt without being shown up, it can only help his confidence and the stability of our backline. There will be times when Frampton will be the more obvious matchup and so hopefully McInnes has made the role his own, but we’re not wedded to it.

Thats just experience. He'll learn a lot of those kind of moments.

Two big match ups coming up for Reef in the next couple. Will probably get Naughton next week and then McKay against Carlton... Then hopefully gets a little easier with Swans, Lions, Essendon the next three.

He's just gotta compete in the air, spoil against these big blokes. Make them work for it. Wont always be perfect, but he'll have support.

It was a really slick move from Rioli. The actual damage though was a slight misjudgment from Reef - coming out at the footy when he wasn't going to get there rather than running to Rioli to hold him up once the ball got through to him. No big deal and I doubt it would have made a difference.

Did well. Couldn't ask for better tall match ups though. Georgiades and Lukosius are really ordinary in a physical contest. Tougher games to come. Hopefully he continues to hold up. Looks like he's going to get a difficult range of opponents - from slippery smalls to powerful talls. You need a couple like Bruzzy and hopefully Reef who can play small or tall.

He is growing.
He is also a very good ground level player which helps us when the ball is on the deck.
He has that burst too to rebound and run the ball out as part of chains as evident a few times last night.

More tests will come but 2 games into his first stint as a FB effectively, he is fitting in

I feel like for those two games, we need to get Howe to find a way to play a little more as a third man up in support, and even Cameron to play defensively deeper than he usually does to provide his intercept contested marking in the D50.

They played him on a range of players through pre-season. Cox. Mcstay. Membrey. West. Probably for situations where he'll come into opponents bigger, smaller or taller than him, so he knows how to mix up how he plays.

It's been proper smalls too the first fortnight. It's surprised me. I shouldn't be surprised though as we do tend to set our defensive grid and the players they play on changes as the opposition shifts their blokes around.
