I doubt that is set in stone.
Of course it's not set in stone. What seemed set in stone though was he was getttto get a good opportunity to cement his spot this year. That's not set in stone next year.

I don’t think he’s gonna become a better player by spending a year on the sidelines
I mean fitter. stronger. Become the best athlete you can be while on the sidelines. Mcstay made that a focus during his recovery
Either way, he'll have a few players who have been in his positon he can lean on.

It may not be ideal, but he can spend even more time in the gym, doing non-running aerobic work, studying footage, etc without worrying about the usual commitments and recovery requirements that playing players have.

For a young player especially, it’s not impossible that he’s better the next time we see him on an AFL field.

If he’s going to keep his fitness at afl level then he will have the same recovery requirements other players have.

How many players come back better the year after their ACL? Is there a single one? Mentally it takes a long time to get over

Ashcroft?
Ben King kicked 40 in the year after he came back from his ACL
Mcstay too.

His recovery requirements will not be the same because he doesn’t have to get himself to peak readiness each week play a game.

We don’t have to look far. McStay himself looks better, or at least equivalent. Granted, small sample size yada yada.

If he’s not pushing himself to game day intensity then he won’t have the fitness of other players, you can’t have the same fitness without the same recovery.

McStay was very rusty when he came back, and doesn’t rely on lateral movement much like a more agile player

Lots of players come back and play well, I just don’t think we should have expectations on Reef to come back better next year, he’s still a while off finding his feet even without this setback
Of course. But doesn't mean it shouldn't be his mindset. Get stronger, better and fitter. It may stop you from playing, but shouldn't stop you from trying to become a better player at the other side of it.
Hopefully he's okay mentally, its a tough rehab. I'll watch with interest to see how he battles his rehab.

There are plenty who come back to high levels immediately upon return. McStay & Ashcroft in very recent memory

Maybe better prepared mental and physically, (knee aside) will be more palatable for you?
If he spends more time with Murph and Roughy, that will assist him in achieving that.
His knee will take time though.

Shattering
But has shown enough. They’ll give him a new contract so he can focus on his recovery. Especially since they saw this role as his.
I certainly hope so, Jen. The kid deserves it and it would show real class from the club that they look after their people.

Of course they will. ACLs aren't viewed the way they used to be. Players come back from them well these days.
And wade doesn't view them as a traditional way. They don't put ceilings on what they can or can't achieve through their rehab.

I think the important note was from Fly in the post-match presser was him saying that Reef was a part of their future. On that alone, I expect him to receive another contract extention.
I think it was a given the way he had impressed in preseason, was gonna get one. And definitely will now. Hopefully gets it done soon so he doesn't have to stress over it.

It's probably made it more certain that he's on our list next year. If he had've struggled in his new role as the season went on, he would have been in trouble.

If he was stuck in the vfl and did it, then it probably would be a different story. But the fact they saw him in the back 6/7 this year with the pre-season he had, would change things.
