More and more it's becoming apparent that injuries were a problem that have exposed deficiencies in our coaching resources. Generally, I don't think we can continue to use injuries as an excuse for how poor our attitude, skills under pressure, problems with leadership and general teamwork has been at times. Injuries definitely affected how well we can play consistent footy as a team with a stable player base, but it's obvious the footy department needs to be beefed up if we're going to be serious about next year.

Hinkley's was a knee done during pre-season.

Not sure about the exact problem as it was never really reported on by the club at the time. Just started the season listed on the injury list as a "knee".

Vast majority are game\impact injuries so largely you can pass the fitness staff.

Our deficiency is in our tactics. Harvs just is not a tactical coach probably been over promoted. An ideal assistant to get players toughened up. Last year with Scott and Wallis they played differently, hunted in packs and pressured the opposition ball carrier continuously. Our tactics appeared more thoughtful and insightful. Different to the way they have played this year. The drop off is probably Wallis and Scott.

That's a fair chunk of our best 22.

I blame Harvey for not coaching the 2011 Freo B side ala Launceston '10, to a top 4 spot.

True story.

I fully agree with this. And yet he has not got the players toughened up, and he didn't really as an assistant here either. he was a good backline coach, but did nothing with the forward line.

I just hope we get some genius tactician alongside him, and some hard as nails assistants to get the players to play aggressive football.

What a cop out, only a few are a result of major impact.

The rest of your points are a good way of trying to change the subject and take the focus off our fitness staff

injuries can explain not winning. No problem with that. Lack of effort, structure and game plan are factors that are in control of FFC

whilst we have had a shocking run with injuries i would say we have had a very very very soft draw to date.

Quite a few of those injuries aren't impact and the kind you'd get from poor conditioning. Hayden broke his leg against Sydney, but his foot problem at the start of the year has been something that has chronically afflicted the club for the past three years.

Scham to give the benefit of the doubt, I gather you are not across the mechanisms of injuries.

Whilst Turf toe is not an impact injury I am not sure what you were hoping the medical staff could possibly do to prevent it.

Without going thru the whole list I did like the bit on Hayden. Are you suggesting that have managed him into a state of low bone density?

Clay, the guys that it appears to be poor managed have been Hill and Mundy (pre-season that is). Maybe we could add Michie to that list but that is based on rumour rather than fact.

With Hayden it is bloody hard to sort out some of the various foot problems and if things do not go right for you early then you can be pushing it up-hill from there on through.

The past three years the following players I can recall have had stress related foot injuries:

Mayne
Ballas
Sandilands
Hayden
Michie

As for preseason shin splints, in the past two seasons I can recall:

De Boer
Mundy
Hill

That's way too many. I think we've had a stroke of bad luck this season with injuries, but in any normal season, they'd probably be manageable. If underlying that, you have stress related injuries (Hayden's feet or Hill and Mundy's shin splints), you're then put further behind.

It's not all down to luck.

How do the fitness staff avoid turf toe, multiple leg breaks, hamstrings in games under game pressures, knee injuries??

They need to assess it sure but alot are game\impact (I didnt say they were all impact) Alot are bad luck and not injuries where its possible to tie blame back to the staff and say the fitness staff ****ed up.

Knee injuries are movement injuries that are occuring in the course of the game under game pressure. Morabito is a training injury but his is not a clear example of the staff miss-training him. Shin splints maybe, ask a sports medic...is it due to fitness malpractice or a yet unknown sports issues.

True story.

When we go into a "must win" game and we come up with a plan that involves taking one of our better forwards out of the forward line and playing him as a tagger on the opposition's best midfielder, and then taking one of our best defenders out of the backline and playing him up forward ... which results in them kicking goals at will and us not being able to find a target inside 50 all day ... well ... don't the fans have a right to question the tactics?

Mundy 8wks (so far)
Barlow 14 wks
Hayden 19wks
Silvani 13wks
Suban 12wks
Mcphee 7wks
Total 104wks of football missed

I'm not really one that is keen to use injuries as excuses but that is almost five entire seasons worth of football missed by 8 of our best 22 this year. Add to that all the other injuries that we have been dealt and the least it has to be said that have been pretty unlucky but it has highlighted that we are lacking any sort of depth.

It is disappointing not to be in the finals this yr but I dont think that the team is in total disrepair. I dont think that we need to do anything too drastic but the strength and conditioning definitely needs to be looked at. In a strange way Grover and Mcpharlin who are usually very injury prone have both escaped uninjured and played possibly the best seasons of their respective careers so possibly the training needs to be targeted more to the individual than just giving the entire team the same weights regime.
