This is a thread for reports, articles, coaches comments, etc. that may have an affect on our DT selections. Post and discuss anything you find here that may influence DT.

At the forefront of a lot of our minds, Cousins and Raines:

Ben Cousins and Andrew Raines are both expected to be sidelined for at least three weeks following injuries sustained in last night’s loss to Carlton.

Cousins suffered a grade one hamstring strain – considered in the low-end category for hamstring injuries – early in the last quarter.

“His condition today is better than what we expected,” Richmond Football Operations Manager Ross Monaghan said.

“We will take a conservative approach to treating Ben’s injury, and he is expected to be on the sidelines for 3-4 weeks.”

Raines also left the field in the last quarter of last night’s match with a knee injury, which was later revealed as a lateral meniscus tear.

“At this stage he is expected to miss 3-4 weeks, but if the damage is worse than expected, he could be out for a longer period,” Monaghan said.

Updates to Raines’ injury will be posted on richmondfc.com.au in the coming days

Wade Thompson has also apparently been culled from the Port side playing on Sunday:

Power fans will have to wait a little longer to see pint-sized dynamo Wade Thompson play his first game for the club.

Thompson, 20, was elevated to the senior list earlier in the week but was left out of the final 22 to take on the Bombers.

William said the leadership group had been split as to whether to play the exciting forward.

“Right at the moment, Wade’s not going to play, but (SANFL team) North Adelaide aren’t playing this week and we have the opportunity to have a late change if we want,” Williams said.

“He’s done everything possible to get in the side. I just spoke to him and told him there was nothing we could have ever imagined or hoped for that he could have produced as a young player coming from so far back.”

Great idea for a thread Verge (can I type it how I say it?) ;)

Thought this was most relevant:

Hopefully won't be severe. Its gonna put early pressure on all those with Hill in their 22!

What can I say, I'm an ideas man :p.

Looks as if the backline curse of 2008 has found its way into 2009. I'm guessing Raines was one of BigFooty's most popular players, will be interesting to see what strategies people come up with to cover. Those with Hill on the field will probably be feeling the heat soon enough.

An article on Gumbleton, basically stating that he'll miss the whole season. Completely luckless footballer. I gotta admit this isn't great timing for DT, the only reason I didn't pick Hille is because I thought 4 tall forwards would decrease his output:

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sport/afl/story/0,26576,25249851-19742,00.html

LUCKLESS Bomber Scott Gumbleton is to undergo back surgery that will sideline him for most of the 2009 season.

Gumbleton, who has been restricted to just five games in his first two seasons at Windy Hill, will have surgery on a bulging disc in 10 days' time.

Bombers football operations manager Paul Hamilton said the club had consulted with a number of specialists before deciding to book the 20-year-old in for the procedure.

"This sort of injury takes time to heal and he will need to rest for around 12 weeks before resuming training," he said.

"Obviously it is disappointing for Scott and this is a hard thing for him but people have to remember that he is still just 20-years-old and he is a determined young man.

"Jason Winderlich went through a similar procedure last year and he has recovered and will be playing on Sunday so that will provide a good example for Scott to follow."
I don't wanna jinx him, but wasn't Winderlich's career in doubt not too long ago? Not great signs.

Liam Anthony out due to stress fractures:

http://www.kangaroos.com.au/season2008/news/newsarticle/tabid/4912/newsid/73887/default.aspx
THE DEBUT of North Melbourne draftee Liam Anthony has been put on hold after stress fractures were discovered in his foot on Thursday.

Anthony was named on a wing in North's side to play Melbourne at the MCG on Sunday, but soreness after training prompted the club to send him for scans.

Chief of football Donald McDonald said the stress fractures could sideline the 21-year-old for up to six weeks.

Corey cool about back role
ONE OF the most prolific midfielders in the competition last year, Geelong's Joel Corey says he is happy to become a backman to fill the void left by injured teammates Josh Hunt and Tom Harley.

Corey, 27, played most of Friday night’s round one clash against Hawthorn in the back half and had the better of several opponents including grand final dangermen Stuart Dew and Campbell Brown.

His work in the clinches and ability to set up attacks from the defensive 50m arc made him among the most effective Cats on the night.

Corey ended the game with 28 possessions and said he enjoyed being part of one of the league's best defences.

"I went into the midfield a little bit but the team needed me down at half-back so that is where I was," Corey said after Geelong's eight-point win.

"That’s the way it goes. I don’t mind playing back there, they are a solid unit.

"[I'll play] wherever I am needed."

Corey said the side had plenty of improvement in it, especially after it let Hawthorn fight back from 43 points down early in the last term.

"I think we grinded it out and there was a lot of hard work to go into it so in round one I don’t think you’ll see our best football," he said.

"It wasn’t ideal the way we finished off the game but we did get over the line in the end. It was disappointing but you take the points."

Corey said that during the Hawks' comeback, his teammates lost their structure and allowed forwards Lance Franklin and Jarryd Roughead too much space.

"That’s not something you want to see and we really hung Tommy Lonergan and Harry Taylor out to dry a bit," Corey said.

"We lost our heads a little bit but ended up all right.

"We are two good sides and, if you watch AFL, no team dominates for the whole game so when you’ve got two evenly matched sides you get a good match."

Corey said the Cats had moved on from last year’s grand final disappointment.

"We worked really hard on our skills in the pre-season, that is the main area," he said.

"It’s 2009 now, we can’t look back."

I really dont know what to think of corey's back role. I dont see it as positive of negative - i think he will still produce about the same in this role, and he will still have stints in the midfield.

He wasnt really scoring that well until the last quarter when he went into the midfield. He only did that because they were under pressure - ergo, if the Cats blow opponents out he will probably play whole games down back.

I got rid of him because of this job uncertainty, im not sure if he will score at the same levels as last year...

Loving the breach of copyright in this thread :thumbsu:. No but seriously great articles so far.

In regards to Raines does anyone even know what he's done? I mean all I've heard is he got "a knock on the knee" but that doesn't really allude to anything. Right now I'm worried he is going to become one of these famous "indefinites" on the RFC injury list. You know the ones that are on there like that for 8 weeks before being rubbed out for the entire year. Flipside is he could be back next week e.g Cox and Cornes (the second time anyway) last year.

Sam Lonergan injured:

Full article: http://essendonfc.com.au/news/news.asp?nid=6437

Essendon on-baller Sam Lonergan has suffered a spiral fracture to a bone in his hand.

Football operations manager, Paul Hamilton, said the 22-year-old was injured during a routine training drill today.

"It was an innocuous incident and was just one of those unlucky things that can happen at training," he said.

"He had scans today and will see a specialist tonight so we will know more about the injury and exactly what it means, regarding missing any games, tomorrow (Wednesday).

I'm not sure how sever a spiral fracture is, but if he misses games, could we see Zaharakis?

Good possibility we'll see Zaha in our line-up next week against Freo. Dominated the VFL against some hard, seasoned Geelong players; Is raring to go.

Hayden In Doubt Solomon In Broughton Gilmore Possibles.
Roger Hayden remains doubtful for this weekends clash with the Bombers according to Harvey, after injuring a hammy last week. Solomon will come straight back in while Broughton and Gilmore are under consideration.

That is a summary from the following: http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/74205/default.aspx

"DEFENDER Graham Johncock will return to Adelaide's line-up when it hosts St Kilda at AAMI Stadium on Friday night.

Johncock missed the round one win over Collingwood to return to Port Lincoln to mourn the sudden death of his mother.

However, coach Neil Craig confirmed that the 26-year-old appeared at West Lakes on Monday and expressed his readiness to play.

"I had a good, healthy conversation with Graham on Tuesday and he assures me he’s ready to perform," Craig said on Thursday. "I’ll back him in on that."

Johncock's inclusion is likely to be one of two changes to the side that upset the Pies by four points at the MCG last week.

Midfielder Scott Thompson, who missed with hamstring soreness, will also play his first game of the season provided he gets through Thursday’s light training run.

One of inexperienced quintet Taylor Walker, Patrick Dangerfield, Jared Petrenko, Andy Otten and Myke Cook, all impressive against Collingwood, could make way for Thompson or Johncock.

Jon Griffin, Brad Symes, Jarrhan Jacky and tagger Rob Shirley are also putting pressure on the selectors to make more unforced changes."

Rain is forecast, i'd say Walker for sure.

Rain is forecast, i'd say Walker for sure.

Whispers from a VERY reliable source on the Adelaide board have said that Walker was going to initially be left out, but there was an injury at training (believed to be Knights but not yet confirmed) which will bring him back into the team.

Chances are its Thompson & Johncock in, Cook & Knights out.

Ah damn it. Hurley was my smokey back pick, so now it looks like I will have to trade Raines...

If McMahon gets dropped im going to stab someone. :p
