OP waiting to happen, should rest 1 week in 4 for the rest of 08.
Do it Harves.

He has been our best player so far this season and we need him as Des, Foster and Hase are out and we dont have many other midfeild replacments in his quality.

Did he have groin problems prior to being drafted?

I don't think so, but the amount of running he does is phenomenal, and he'd be a text book case of OP, with the step up in intensity he's had this year. We need him firing on all cylinders for next year.

He has had OP before, thats what stopped him getting drafted the first time round.

He had alot of injury problems before the 18's carnival last year inlcuding his groins...

Would like to see him rested this week against the saints... Hinkley and O'brien played blinders on the weekend bring one of them in against a slower midfield like the saints

I'd prefer him playing this weekend and helping us win and still bringing a O'Brien in.

Rest Palmer for the Geelong game

Hmmm... you aren't the sharpest knife.

There have been a lot of articles around saying how Rhys got his work ethic through his recovery from severe OP.

As long as his running technique is sound (looks ok), have people looking after his feet (which I'm sure he does) and has good core strength (which he obviously does) there isn't much risk.

It really doesn't have much to do with amount of running, but the biomechanics. One of the main causes at footy clubs is bad exercise bikes interestingly, not the running. Kicking doesn't help though.

He has the body to be playing, and I don't have a problem with him doing so.

I don't quite get the whole... "rest the rookie" type statements a lot of people make (it's rare to see it on this forum since we haven't played them for a while). The younger you are the quicker you can recover from any tissue damage. The only risk would be getting injuries like chops said doing things badly or getting smacked around on the ground (which is somewhat a risk if the player in question doesn't have enough strength or mass to stop being thrown around which is the case with some rookies).

Palmer seems to have a mature body, so i can't see why you would rest him at the moment.

maybe for the SCG or SS games - we have buckleys chance of winning them.

Well if harvs says he is seeing fatigue start to creep in then i trust he will do the right thing. Heres hoping we dont burn the best thing we have had in years into the ground

Yep, forgot about his history. But saying there isn't much risk of him developing OP is 100% wrong. Have you done a cereal box sports science course or something, Einstein?

No.

Just treat it with frequent occurence, as well as training with and learning from the authority on conditioning in this state. :thumbsu:

I don't know about him being fatigued.

After the game on Saturday, did anyone see him sprint to hand the hat/ball to the kids behind the goal? Then sprint back to the group of players?

The bastard has freak fitness.

Sounds like someone who hasn't worked hard enough during the game to me!!!! ;)

The Freo "attitude" has struck our best young player, he's saving energy for the pub crawl after the game. Delist, delist!!!!!!!!!! :p

Fair enough, and your opinion is they need better exercise bikes. Mine is he needs a rest.

Our record with OP has been very good, touch wood. So whatever they are doing down there in that regard has obviously worked. From memory, they had a physio down there many years ago who specialised in hip and adductor strength balancing. If he is still there, or if he trained up the others there, then that would be a big reason for it.

But what evidence do you have that he is in imminent danger of developing OP? His posture when he runs is very balanced, he is very straight, isn't having any trouble changing speeds or direction. Can kick both feet. There just aren't any warning signs there.

I didn't suggest changing exercise bikes, but it is a fact that when OP burst onto the seen as a fad injury, it coincided with new exercise bike technology being brought out. I may even have overheard that Injunction had taken action against the suppliers of said equipment...

The physio Jeff Boyle is still down there, and he does have a great track record with OP, eg Luke McPharlin. But we aren't immune to these problems, eg Belly had problems 1-2 years back, Hasleby has had ongoing back/groin probs.
OP didn't burst onto the scene, it just wasn't diagnosed well in the past.
I just think we have nothing to gain in pushing our luck with a young bloke in his 1st year.

Hasleby's problems stem from an ill advised back fusion he had when he was 18. There isn't a whole lot you can do from then on.

It's not what I hear. I think it's kind of undeniable the increasing rates of OP at the turn of the century. Harder grounds, greater strength through the legs, moving a lot of fitness work to the bike, and poor running technique are usually what is thought to be the main problems. The only constant there is the poor running technique.

Still haven't presented a case for your argument really. He is a year older than most draftees, he is physically perfectly developed to be playing AFL. It isn't a matter of experience, at his age it is a matter of physical preparedness, and he is fine. He is our number 1 midfielder now, and will be into the future, so I fail to see why he shouldn't play every game if he is right. Still haven't given me a valid reason why he is at increased risk. He spent 2 years specifically getting his body right so it never happens again.

Our medicos are good with managing and preventing this type of injury, so I just don't understand the concern.

Yeah, hopefully you're right, I'm just really looking forward to 09. I might start a "rest Pav" thread now.

I'd give him the Geelong game off too. Let him have a good 2 week break to freshen up both physically and mentally. If he can make it through the rest of the season then great, but if not, give him another break a few weeks later. He's done an enormous amount of work for a first year player and has had a lot of attention from the opposition. Give another one of the young guys a go, or turn the heat on some of the mid-tier guys to step up while he's out.
