Updated Rankings

  • The more I watch of Farrow and Cumming the more their respective positions improve
  • Josh Lindsay falling, mainly because he is a purely outside player and I don't see him transitioning into the midfield
  • Added a few additional names to the 40+ who have AFL qualities that may see them get drafted

Any reasoning behind Sweid being lower than Al-Akcher?

Defined position.

Sweid is a solid midfielder at Coates League level, but I’m not sure he has an athletic point of different (with his height) to be a genuine mid at AFL level.

Al-Akcher has a defined position and I could see him finding that niche at AFL level.

Been playing on ball the last couple of weeks...
Strange that they play directly against each other on the weekend and Phillipou so so much better than LeRay. Leray has something like 7 kick outs out of his 32 and doesn't his the score board. Phillipou has 23 and 3 goals 2 and people are still not convinced. They have never played a game against each other out of the 5 or so in the last two years where Phillipou hasn't been far superior. Anyway everyone is entitled to their opinion and we are all just speculating. Hopefully they both have good careers but only one of them can be an absolute star of the comp.

They play different roles though and the two of them have different playing styles.

Phillipou is more of a centre-forward midfielder, and often spends time resting forward, so he is far more likely to impact the scoreboard.

LeRay more defensive, keeping his width outside of the content. LeRay covers more of the ground, and spends time across half back too.

I think that's reflective in their under 18 stats too, with LeRay averaging more kicks, marks, inside 50's and rebound 50's, whereas Phillipo avg's more disposals and shots on goal.

I think you made my point in what world would anyone even come close to choosing a loose defender outside player over a centre forward mid gamebreaker who can kick goals from 55 and do something out of nothing. There is nothing LeRay can do that Jev can't there is plenty the other way around

I’d argue there’s a lot that one is better than the other at. Think they’re both around the same draft range and it just depends who’s taking the pick. Better teams would take Phillipou and worse teams would take LeRay

I'm not arguing about the level of talent or who has the higher upside, I think that's pretty obvious, but there are plenty of examples of drafting across the journey where the higher risk players are taken later on in the draft because clubs draft for needs rather than best available or who has the higher ceiling.

As far as Jpou doing everything that LeRay can, I think that's underestimating LeRay's game considerably. Jev doesn't cover the ground anywhere near as well as LeRay, which is why LeRay is so reliable/consistent in that wing role. He understands the role, retains the ball with good decision making/skill and has good balance between his offensive/defensive game.

Outside runners who can play both offensive and defensive roles are so critical in the modern game, which is another reason why I really rate him higher than most.

You have to be in the Jevan camp or related in some way, it's that obvious. Tasmania LOL

This poster seems to have a fair bit of skin in the game hey?

Seems that way....

Book mark it now and remember these words. Jevan Phillipou will be the best player from SA in this draft and it won't be close. He has more raw talent than the next top 3 combined. Wherever he goes in the draft within a couple of years people simply won't believe he was drafted so late. Elite speed, endurance, power, hops, his left and right are so elite its impossible to tell which is his dominant foot. Fantastic contested mark for his size, and great on the ground as well. Most of all he is such a good decision maker and has what the game demands more than ever these days.... he is maximum damage. Almost every time he touches the ball it leads to good things and scores for his team. Had a terrible run with injury this year but no one in SA comes close to him.

I have no doubt this reads like bias and people will assume it is. Wait and I promise you will see.

I am just not big on accumulators or loose outside players when compared to genuine centre forward game breakers. I wish I was involved no luck, but I am passionate about my opinons and watch a fair bit of SA footy. What I am absolutely certain of is if I was lucky enough to have a meaningful involvement with any highly touted draftee I wouldn't try and make my point on big footy in the hope of impacting a players prospects hahaha. Come on guys surely we know this is just fun debate forum that doesn't influence anything ever. Surely surely we all agree on that?

Or do people on bigfooty actually think the people who matter take any serious interest whatsoever of what goes on here. Surely junior footy watchers aren't so self indulgent to think we are ever going to have any impact with our comments on bigfooty. It's so laughable I can't believe I am even making the point.

I think it's a combination including he's NGA St Kilda, I think, and although at school he's a midfielder he's been playing Coates and Vic Metro off half back.
Yet to see him play a bad game. Does everything well but not elite. That probably the knock on him. He will be very good at afl with a proper system around him

How do you compare jnr Phillipou to his brother at the saints ?
Who seems to be a slow burn

That's a good take IMO. Sweid is overweight compared to his peers so some of his upside is tied to getting into an AFL program. I find some of his athletic traits are lacking for a guy his height having said that.

Pretty similar players. Mpou was probably was probably a bit more dynamic and mercurial with his movement and aerial ability. Jpou probably more established as a genuine mid.

Both of them try to do a little bit much and get caught out rushing their disposals.

I had concerns about Mpou developing into a genuine mid in his draft year due to his lack of tank, I’ve heard that the concerns are similar for Jpou too.

What? Matthias ran a 6min 2km. And according to reports his brother might be an even better athlete.

I think Talor Byrne gets drafted a a small pressure forward even though he plays mostly midfield for the GWV Rebels, put it this way he certainly has speed, agility and a take no prisoners attack on the contest and I'd be picking him before teammate Harley Hicks who no doubt has extreme talent but can be a bit flakey with his attack on the contest.
14 Clubs have spoken to him - he’ll go inside 30
