Mabior Chol will spend 2018 in the VFL, take a stack of marks and and finish the year kicking 2-3 times as many behinds as goals. Nothing against the kid, but I would have thought it was time to pull the pin on that experiment.
The rookie list is exactly the right vehicle for him to should stay on the list.

Morris, Hunt & Elton would be on minimum wage (or close enough to as to make no difference), so really don't clear up any space, because their replacements will earn just as much. Maric & Yarran were known to be gone some time back so the cap space cleared up might well have been 'spent' already.
Morris wouldnt be as he signed a 3 year deal. More towards ave wage imo.

Could be, but they said they wanted to use a high pick on a quality young tall from the draft, one that would eventually compliment and then replace Jack, but with Elton getting the flick and Griff medically unstable who knows.

Just reckon from everything that I’ve read that talls in this draft are pretty thin on quality by the time our picks roll around. Schache probably being an upgrade on what’s available if we are in fact looking for talls this draft.

I also think that Dan Richo saying what he says publicly and what Balmey is saying publicly has the whole industry guessing what our plans are

If you look at the numbers, while the average might be higher, but the median would be at the bottom end. Giving him a 3rd year was job security, not more each year.

Best guess, 30-35 players would be on min wage or near enough to it.

Only the top 10 would be noticably above it.

Schache reminds me of Travis Cloke. Size, kick, pace etc. Cloke was a very good player who when he slowed down and the game got quicker, was not much use. Has Schache got any toe, if not buyer beware. I'm a Callum Moore fan, so don't feel the urgency for another tall other than through the draft.

Just to gauge the level of salary savings with these delistings / retirements whats peoples views on what the would have been getting ?

Maric - $300,000
Morris - $300,000
Hunt - $200,000
Yarran - $450,000
Elton - $150,000

Thats $1.4 million just on these players imo - WOW
This is unders mate and I think closer to 1.6 mil. This is why Castagna is not going anywhere as I said yesterday.
Pissed off Moore wasn’t elevated.

I think you've overestimated the number of players on close to minimum wage. For a start you can find the guys on average or better/just worse in 2017: Martin, Cotch, JR, Rance, Prestia, Caddy, Titch, Hampson (why I don't know), Lids (we were paying him 400k), Yarran, Houli, BEllis, Grigg, Vlastuin, Nankervis would all be around the mark.

Unknowns for a few others (but probably lower around 150-200k): Grimes, Astbury, Miles, Lloyd, Conca, Griff, Batch, Hunt, Morris.

The kids on min chips: CEllis, Rioli, Bolton, Short, Butler, Menadue, Markov, McIntosh, Towner, Broad, Maric (not a kid in 17 but on min chips), Lennon, anyone I've missed.

So we have just delisted 3, plus the retirements of Maric & Yarran. All as expected.

I am just curious as to whether I am missing something with the 2 rookie elevations reportedly already happened.
Is it true that we can only take as many picks (for points) to the draft as spare list places we have?
Shouldn't the elevations wait until after/during the draft so that we have 5 live picks (for points) rather than just 3 ? Considering we may need as many points as possible for a Naish bid, particularly if bid after pick 17.

I think it means we've already got trades lined up. They know a couple more list spots will be opening up once the trade period gets underway.

I still think he would be 300k per year, not at around 100k per year which is min chips. At the time of his signing he was still a best 22 player.

There isn't really that much to go around.

Next year, the total cap is ~$12M, min wage is $100K+$4400game

So if we had 42 players all on min wage, we'd be paying just over $6.3M regardless.

That remaining $5.7M doesn't go that far, even after deducting the min wage, that leaves us paying around $1M to Dusty (so $1.2M total), over $2M between Cotch, Jack, Rance & Prestia (avg 700K each...probably a bit more)....So after 5 players we have around $2.5M 'extra' left to split between the rest...So a player 15-20 on the list wont be getting much.

Rookie upgrades happen before the draft these days, and no you are not missing something, we can only take in live picks. So we are going to have to free up at least 2 more spots if we want to grab Naish with later picks. You'd assume they already have a plan for that.

Thought Batch was getting the flick for some reason, glad he isn't.
You can do a lot worse than Batch as a depth player. Happy for him to run around again.
Doesn't guarantee he won't be cut, the club might be trying to get a trade for him or waiting until they know how many spots are free before they re-sign or delist him. His VFL form was very good so would be happy to retain him if we don't need the extra spot.

Was that before Brisbane came out today and said they are open to trading him for the right price?

Regardless of what Richmond says in the media, given we need another tall in the forward line, I'd be annoyed if we didn't ask the question again.

Whether we ever know any further in public about that discussion is another matter though.
Eyebrows would have to be raised why Brisbane are shopping him. Hope the club does due diligence of they are interested in signing him. I can't see an advantage of giving up a first rounder on Schache if are able to get another untried forward in the draft anyway and especially if there are question marks on his level of commitment to AFL.

So do we have 3 senior list positions available now?

Retired: Maric, Yarran
Delisted: Elton, Morris, Hunt
Promoted: Castagna, Soldo

So picks 15, 16 and 43?

Obviously, Miles, Lloyd, Lennon and Batch might still get traded/moved on.

3 senior list spots
1 rookie spot
3 cat b rookie spots
Unsigned - Lennon, Bachelor, Towno, Miles, Drummond
Sam Lloyd is contracted for 2018 but his manager is actively looking to get him to another club.

Can elevate a player at the start of the season. We may need the extra spot on the senior list going into the draft. Right call IMO

I like Moore too. Pretty quick. I guess the knock is that he isn't super tall at 193.

Schache is 198 and was actually compared to a young Travis Cloke pre draft but a much better kick. Think he has elite endurance more than elite pace.

Despite what we hear I think there is still a chance.

No surprises, they gave Todd Elton a red hot go earlier this season with 6 games and he never really fired a shot. A solid VFL player unable to make the step up, he is not alone, most have trouble with that final step, he gave us his best.

Hunt gave us solid service, this year with a fully fit side it was hard to break in.

Thanks again to Sheeds for arranging for us to get Steve Morris when he was coach of GWS, a little slight of hand with the draft and we got a super clubman who still bleeds yellow and black. Glad to have him with our VFL side guiding the up and coming youngsters. He is the classic half back like Bourke, Sheedy and Malthouse of the past ... well Bourke anyway, the other 2 blokes would be suspended most of the time with video, damn good players and coaches though.

Good times.

Hmm Lloyd, Rioli, Butler, Lambert, Bolton, Stengle and George. We can not play em all, Lambert as a mid stays. it still leaves 6 sml fwds and as far as pure talent and skill goes id say Bolton, Rioli, Butler and Stengle are the keepers.

I know Castagna is a premiership player and has perfromed a top role for us this yr. but fmd if he stays in the best 22 it will mean we are stagnating.

You can find quick small players in every league who can apply pressure and tackle but finding players like that with good skills and can kick goals out of their arses is the next step.

Have you just woken from your coma? We have just won a Premiership with these exact players.

Agree its great Maric is staying at the club in a development/coaching perspective.

Thanks Steve, Taylor and Todd. Good to see Morris commit to VFL squad.

^^^ Agree.

Morris's contribution to the club has been pretty important, I reckon. Can you imagine what goes through the mind of an 18 year old when they have to compete against Steve in the pre-season?

I was specifically talking about what the players you mentioned are on now hence i said morris on $300k. Even if we are talking about players taking up what the difference in dusty's contract, then we still have the tpp increase. Then also we havent taken in any consideration of front loaded contracts. Either way i still think we do have some lee way. I understand your point, was just pointing out there is still some value dropping off, i guess it just depends on what is promised next year.
