Think the saints might bring back Riewoldt in two weeks time against the Pies. If so, who do you think might get a start on him? Reid a chance?

Presti easily.

Destroyed Reiwoldt in Round 3 until he went off. I hope Reiwoldt plays. They're FAR more predictable when Reiwoldt is there, as we showed when we were leading for 3 quarters.

I think we're a btter chance if Reiwoldt IS there than if he isn't. Especia considering he'll need match fitness too.

Disagree with the first part, agree with the second.

I think Riewoldt has shown over the last couple of years that he is more than a match for Presti one on one. The advantage the Presti had in round 3 was that Harry O, Maxwell etc were helping double and triple team Roo.

This is what I'm worried about when we play again in 2 weeks. The Pies spent a long time coming up with a plan to kill our forward zone and it was working really well. When Nick went off at half time the Saints took a quater to sort themselves out and then managed to use the unpredictability of our forward entries to our advantage in the last.

With Roo back I'm worried that the Pies will be able to fall back on their original plan of smothering him (and you know the Saints will kick it to him to get him back into the game) and it will work as it did in round 3.

At the same time though, can we really afford to leave our best player out if he is fully fit? It's a tough call and maybe the coaching staff have something up their sleeve. Playing Riewoldt on a wing would be an interesting move I think.

Going to be a massive game either way :thumbsu:

I agree about having Reiwoldt in.
We were doing well enough with him in before he did his hammy. It could be argued that his injury upset the apple cart for us as we had put a lot of work into nullifying him and when the changes were forced on the Saints we had no suitable response.

It could be argued, but I won't as it's moot.

If we are to have any chance to beat the Saints in a final we need to know exactly where we stand against a side with Reiwoldt in it.

You guys will win either way, I just think we'll have a better chance with Roo in since the Saints are more predictable with him there and he wont be match fit.

There's also the mental hurdle of him worrying about teraing it again, so there's the chance he MAY not go as hard as normal?

But yes, Roo is NORMALLY more than a handful for Presti, agreed 110%, but in THAT particular game, watch it again, even in the one on ones Presti had him cold. In THAT game.

it's not always the case.

Hope it's a better game than the last one which was a truly ugly mess of a game.

Good post Alpha Male.

It was a little too early to say Presti "destroyed" him, however prior to the injury i'd say Presti had the chocolates.

And I do agree with you, I think we have a better chance of winning with Roo in the team. We couldn't handle your small forwards last time, with Roo in you know he is going to demand the ball thus making it a little more predictable for our backmen.

Agreed... It works in our favour if Riewoldt plays. Makes them more predictable and makes our 3rd man up or zoning off easier. Presti dominated him last time until he got injured, then we kicked ourselves out of the game.

Look for much of the same.

Presti definitely had Reiwoldt cold in that game up until the injury. But Reiwodlts greatest strength is his gut running and he tends to wear opponents down as the game wears on. It would have been interesting to see how Presti fared towards the end of the game.

I hope they do bring him back against us.

Cause he actually did his hammy against us in round three, and i reckon he will re do it again against us.

Personally i reckon Reiwoldt will not properly recover from that hamstring tear, ask players like buckley about it.

Reiwoldt will not be the same player again.Nick Reiwoldt will not have the same endurance speed he once had, following this injury,so if the saints are waiting gfor him to have the same impact they are dreaming.

His cousin Jack though will be a superstar one day.

Presti gets him and I also hope he plays.

And Presti/backline did destroy him in round 3. He had 4 disposals in a half of which 2 were from free kicks, 1 of which was an off the ball fall:rolleyes: by Reiwoldt, similar to the ones he received in the previous 2 games and the PF against the Dogs.

Presti was single handedly pantsing Riewoldt in the round 3 match. Riewoldt saved face by getting injured when he did, it took the heat of the beating he was copping.

I'm not overly worried about Riewoldt, it's the complete disregard we show to Gilbert, Goddard and Fisher that continually makes me rage . Stopping their dash from defence instantly stiffles the feed to Riewoldt and kills two birds with one stone.

Reid is custon built to play on Riewolt, what better time to try him than now. He won't be match fit and we will know before finals if he suits that match up.

If I'm honest I have to say I'm more worried about this game than I was about the Geelong game. At least against Geelong we weren't really expected to win. Against the Pies, with Roo back, the media will pump it up like it's the Grand Final already.

There are 4 ways the media will run with this (and we know they will milk the game for everything it's worth)

1. Riewoldt comes back and we win - Saints are unstoppable. Riewoldt is the most important player in the comp. Collingwood are pretenders etc.

2. Riewoldt comes back and we lose - Saints too predictable. Reiwoldt not @ 100%. Pies the best placed team to beat Cats.

3. No Riewoldt and we win - Are the Saints better without him? The system is what wins games. Pies pretenders. Saints the only team to trouble the Cats.

4. No Riewoldt and we lose - Collingwood better than the Saints. Saints can't win the flag without Roo. Geelong can't be stopped.

I think that we will see Dawson, Stanley and Pattison out with Roo, Kosi and Gram coming in over the next 2 weeks and that's the other key. We have Brisbane the week before hand which, as we know, is an iffy surface at the best of times. I'm not sure that Ross would risk bringing Gram and Kosi back with their ankle and soft tissue problems.

This then begs the question - Do we make 3 changes for one game?

I really do think that this season is still very wide open. Barlow going down hurts Fremantle who are out of form as it is. Geelong are either playing in third gear or are too cocky for their own good. The Pies are going up and down like a roller coaster depending on their forward line setup. The Saints are chugging along but are now uncertain about their best team (Who plays out of Dawson, Clarke, Baker, Dempter, Peake, Steven, Geary, Armitage and Stanley come finals time?) The Blues, Hawks and Dogs are a step down but still look dangerous on their day.

Going to be a crazy finish to the season.

That game will be one of the classics, i would put presti on to him, he was beating him in round 3 until hes hammy twanged. If i was the selectors i would rest presti this week against the power.
Im not being negative towards reid, hes a fantastic player but why play him on riewoldt, riewoldt is a lot stronger and fiitter u would think, but on the other hand ya never know, he could do the trick.
i hope the saints play like they did yesterday, we would win

Riewoldt and Kosi as their KPF.. yikes !
Harry O must shut down Milne. Always seems to kick a bag on us..

They shouldn't DARE play Reid on Roo.

If Reid can't keep with with Cam Mooney, how in the blue flames of HELL could he keep up with Reiwoldt?

You'd think that he has improved since then but I wouldn't play him on Roo either, even if it is his first game back since round three. Depite Reids improvement ATM I don't see him being ready to take on the number 1 forward yet.

Two very different forwards, overall Presti or N.Brown are better suited to Mooney not Reid. Id gladly see him go onto Roo...his improvement has been massive and his confidence is sky high at the moment.

Reid should play on Roo and Buddy this season and i think he'll do a better job than most supporters believe he can

I think Reid will play on Riewoldt this time around. In the end of the day this game really will have no bearing come finals time. I know the the media will beat it up into the game of the decade especially if Hawthorne beat Geelong. In reality both teams are assured a top four spot and will still be resting and trying players in differant roles.

Just as a matter of interest who will be the first clown from the media to declare Riewoldt finished when he makes his return and produces so so numbers first up? Ox is my tip.:thumbsu:

No one. There is no way a man who tears a muscle, never mind a major one like a hamstring off a bone can come back 10 weeks later. Running full intesity is one thing at training, but under AFL intensity with contact, constant turning, kicking and what not all that is going to happen is he is going to injure it again. So i kinda hopes he plays so he might not par take in september and we have better chances. But at the same time the man is a freak and a joy to watch :P

This is the conundrum the Saints medical staff face.
Sort of a damned if you do & damned if you don't problem with Roo.
Do they bring him back against the Pies or Lions & hope that the hamstring has fully mended? Remember Buckley & Richo got through full training sessions many times, but still re injured the hammy in their first game back to competitive football. Or do they keep him on ice for a few more weeks & hope that extra time will ensure a happy ending? This solution although probably the safest, would give him less time to find form & gain confidence in the leg before the finals. I like to watch the best players playing footy not stuck on the sidelines. Good luck to him, but perhaps not too much luck against us. ;)

Josh Gibson played at Boxhill the last weekend...

And I agree with Shpeshal Ed, we are in some serious trouble if Reid goes to Riewoldt, he is nowhere near that level at the moment. It was only a couple of weeks ago we were trying our best to find a place to hide Reid from the beating J.Brown was dishing out.

He has improved markedly, but his defensive skills still leave a lot too be desired. Our best defender will go to their best forward, why would anyone expect anything different?

And the game absolutely will have a bearing on the finals, Collingwood will aiming to do absolutely everything in their power to win every game left in the year. Which do you think we'd prefer, finishing 1st and getting Fremantle at home in the first round of finals, or finishing 2nd/3rd and coping Geelong or St.Kilda.

We won't be ****ing around and experimenting in this game, we'll be in it to win it let me assure you.

As i said there is no way he can be back playing at AFL intensity.
