Player Watch Riley Thilthorpe - Signed to End of 2028

How many games did Riley Thilthorpe at 201 cm play in his first two seasons?

What’s the average number of games played in their first two years for all players 197 cm or taller?
What’s your point in all this?
Why are you comparing smaller players to Darcy?

What point are you trying to make exactly
Pretty straight forward.

Some posters have been very critical re the lack of AFL opportunities for a 201 cm Thilthorpe in his first two seasons (only 25 AFL games).

In a similar fashion it has been suggested that 197 cm Curtin should demand a trade if he plays any games in the SANFL this year and his 8 games of AFL in his first year was yet another example of Crow’s mismanagement.

Darcy barely got a game in his first two years but that was good development because he is 7 cm taller than Thilthorpe?

Most 195+ cm players need time to develop in the Twos, you just have to be patient.

Making stuff up to put down imaginary posters is pretty sad.

Darcy was a stringbean

Thilthorpe had already been playing senior football

Thilthorpe didn't get picked because Big Billy dazzled us with a good preseason, nothing to do with a development choice. Or was it Himmelberg? Maybe it was both

Ha ha. Maybe Nicks was trying to send a message to the team that you have to earn your stripes.

TT's development is has been just fine.

I don’t think there were too many complaining about Thilthorpe not getting many games (he played half any way).
A 197cm filled out Curtin is a long way short of a 208cm string bean Darcy, may aswell compare to a 186cm player.
Also the dogs being finalists during his first few years, whereas we have sucked.
Not your best troll thats for sure.

Agree he is trolling badly, but think there is a very relevant point about Curtin.

Bloke was drafted 197cm and 95kg - he is a bit of a unicorn as far as midfielders go. We are seeing the game really change:

Remember when Sandilands came into the league at 211cm. It was comical watching a bloke that size play AFL. Now there are 5 or 6 players on AFL lists between 209 and 211cm. One of the brightest full forwards in the league is 208cm.

Midfielders have also changed.

Remember when 191cm Chad Cornes and 192cm Mathew Pavlich were considered big body midfielders in the mid 2000's? Then that gave way to Bont (194) and Cripps (195) as the new big bodied midfielders in the 2010's. They both weigh kilo's now after being drafted at (83kg for Bont and 88kg for Cripps).

Now we have a kid that was drafted at 18 at 197cm and 95kg. Thats a remarkable difference.

The only player close to him as a midfielder is Connor Nash who was drafted in 2016 as a 195cm, 91 kilo player.

I think one of the most important points is that we have sucked in the last few years whereas the bulldogs have largely made finals.
I know which team has had more opportunities to play.
Anyway I can’t really recall people complaining about Thilthorpe not playing as he’s either been injured or played afl, hasn’t played many games in the SANFL where he could have played AFL instead.
Curtin sure but most of the complaints were because we played him down back and now see him play forward.

I think it was 2023 when Nicks got sucked in by EH good preseason and started him and RT didn’t play the first couple of games. That criticism was warranted.

Jack has obviously held on to that memory in his troll bank and thought last night was a good time.

So what’s happened with Granger Barass? Is he just no good, or no passion to play the game?
My mate is a die hard Hawk and watches all the Box Hill games as well and said he just isn't strong enough. He was never able to bulk up, and was just getting mostered by all the forwards, even at Box Hill.

I would have thought someone would have given him a rookie spot, but maybe he has lost the desire to play.

Your normal response.

Are you suggesting that no one on this Board was critical of the lack of game time in his first two years?

What about Curtin?

To quote Sam Darcy’s pre-draft profile

“Whilst most light on 204 cm draftees resemble Bambi on Ice, the 18 year old is fluent in his movement and showcases wonderful balance in open play.

“His rate of development over the last couple of years has been a sight to behold and will put him in good stead to PLAY EARLY ON IN HIS AFL CAREER”

Certainly wasn’t enough to try and troll with.
Again, bulldogs were a finals team, we have not been.

Thilthorpe has played a grand total of 10 SANFL games in 4 seasons

The only complaints have been about nonsensical decisions like making him the sub or picking Himmelberg over him briefly

Outside of that there have been virtually no complaints about his selection or game time.

There's plenty of examples that could be used where the board has complained about lack of game time for a tall. Like Josh Worrell for example or even Darcy Fogarty. Trying to make that comparison with Thilthorpe just isn't going to fly

I can help here.

Thilthorpe was drafted 2020.

In 2021 he didn’t play round 1 but he never really looked likely to. Frampton was preferred to Himmelberg (who had finished 2020 strongly) in Nicks’ annual bout of pre season amnesia. Thilthorpe debuted in about round 6 and it was kind of out of nowhere and he had a very promising debut season.

In 2022 he played round 1 in the 1 point loss to Freo. He missed an easy set shot in the last quarter then turned the ball over biting off an inboard kick leading to the winning goal. He was scapegoated and played about a month in the SANFL. At one stage there was the curious spectacle of Fog and Thilthorpe running the forward line at Prospect Oval. He seemed to have found touch and be ready for promotion but got injured and ended up finding his way back to the AFL team mid season - and did not really very much for the rest of the year.

In 2023 Himmelberg was preferred in round 1 in Nicks’ annual bout of pre-season amnesia. Thilthorpe came in as sub in round 2 and was activated in the first five minutes when Patrick Parnell got chucked onto his head. Fog got injured that day and Thilthorpe came into the 22 the following week, kicking 5 and was unlucky not to win the showdown medal. He then had another good game against Freo. Then Fog came back, Thilthorpe stayed in the team but was basically in the Dan Curtin “stay out of the way” role for the rest of the year.

In 2024 he was ready to take over the world but then did his knee in the last pre season game.

I’m saying that a troll took a minority of comments and made a post out of it for attention
