RIP Hookesy

Having been a scorer in Adelaide club cricket for many years, I will never forget Hookesy grunting at me "what's the score?" whenever we played his side. He had a certain aura about him. His mum also used to singlehandedly organise a great afternoon tea spread.

Who could ever forget his classic knocks for South Australia at the Adelaide Oval? If Hookesy was batting after tea on a Friday afternoon, city workers would flock from their offices to the ground in anticipation of another barnstorming innings. Most famous was his 107 off 34 balls (17 4's, 3 6's) against Victoria in 1982 - he turned a crowd of a few hundred into 4000. I also saw Hookesy and Paul Nobes peel off 67 in 6 overs in a club game with sheer power and timing. One of the hardest hitters of the ball in Australian cricket.

Thanks for the memories.

the thing that is very annoying about this incident is media reports saying "David Hookes has died after being involved in a fight at a melbourne pub".

correction.

"He was bashed to death outside a melbourne pub"

a sad, sad, end.

I only just heard the news then.....absolutely shocked.

my deepest sympathy to the Hookes family and friends.....and anybody he touched in some small way.....

Just after 7.30 p.m tonight on the way home from the gym, in my car with the sun and wind on my face, i heard that David Hookes had lost his fight for life.

A man of 48. To many of you an age that is decades away, or the age of your parents, but from someone closer to Davids age than many of you, it really tends to make me question my own mortality, and absolute good fortune that there by the grace of god go I.

At 20 y.o you are gunna live for ever, at 30, death is something that happens to someone else, at 40, it is something that becomes more prevelant. When a contemporary is killed it becomes almost personal.

Sorry to carry on, but the death of Hookes is something we all should learn from. Our life is so fleeting and fragile, go to work, the footy, a pub, down the shops and you may not come back. Hit your head and you could just end it all in seconds.

Never take your life for granted, never presume that death happens to someone else, and enjoy every second you have on this planet.

And enjoy the sun on your face and wind in your hair while you can.

David Hookes, your death is such a sensless waste.

May you rest in peace.

Just an absolute tragedy. One of Australia's all time greatest cricketers just taken like that.
Deepest sympathy to his family and friends, and lets hope the punishment for the guilty party is a fitting one.

I have a terrible sick feeling in my stomach, a true heaviness in my heart, and tears welling in my eyes.

Why do they always take the good ones before their time?

David William Hookes, Rest In Peace.

The Bushrangers will win the Pura Cup for David, he deserves no less.

He single-handedly turned our state around, but sadly never got to see the result of his hard work.

Victoria Bushrangers - Doing it for Hookesy in 2004

I never thought I'd say it, but I don't mind if Victoria win the Pura Cup this year.

For obvious reasons. :(

I've just had a look at all the front pages of the pages of the major Aussie dailies and Hookesy's name and face is across every one of them.

He has certainly left a mark, especially in the southern states.

cr.

RIP Hooksey.

I was too young to ever enjoy your on field abilities but you were always one of my favourite commentators and you made a lot of people laugh throughout the years with your sense of humour.

God bless you mate.

I'd like to make this suggestion

Seeing as Victoria are scheduled to meet SA at the G from Friday, and that Hookesy would prefer to see the game being played, wouldn't it make sense to have a hearse go around the G on Friday or the weekend, so the fans can pay tribute to him?
1) I can't see the players being up to playing cricket on Friday, particularly those involved - some who may be feeling a bit guilty.
2) I'd be very surprised if the body is released by Friday.
3) The next 3 games for SA and Vic are all against each other and I would think if this week's game was to be rescheduled, Feb 9 is the only possible date I can see if Victoria are still possible ING finalists.

Goodbye Hookesy... Cricket will miss you all over the world, In Australia, in Victoria, and especially South Australia. You provided us with so many memories and proud moments. This is a great loss to cricket.

Condolences to the Hookes family, the South Australian Cricket Association and Victorian Cricket Association.

Its been 8 hours since i heard and i am still stunned its just a surreal feeling at the moment. Ive never even met the guy but i still feel his loss. Such a great character

RIP Hookesy from a Pom

I remember the centenary test and admiring and hating him in equal measure for ripping the game away...
Champion, and now as an adopted VIC I hope we go on and win the shield as a fitting tribute to a great man.
RIP Hookes, the good ones are always taken away to early.

A terrible terrible day not just for Australian sport but International sport in general.

Thankyou Hookesy for being the man that got me enjoying cricket when i was a youngun.

Anybody else see the paper of the bouncer in the paper? Looks like a typical no neck bouncer thug. Enjoy jail scum!

RIP to an Australian Sporting Legend!! :(

Wonderful post. The loss of David Hookes is unbelievably sad news. I understand that feelings are running high but let's use this thread to pay tribute to the man rather than engaging in thoughts of revenge against his alleged assailant. It was a hateful act, but nothing will bring him back. R.I.P David Hookes

RIP David

I'll always remember your first test, someone so fresh and exciting, someone who was our age. It feels like some of my youth has died too.

I'm sure Mr Micevic has no concept of the enormity of what he has done and taken away from our society. And I don't just mean Hookesy, he has robbed us all of some of our security and perhaps even more of our innocence.

If this tragedy had involved the kick boxing champion of some backwater then the assailant might have an understanding of the magnitude of his cowardly act.

David's passing must lead to a major overhaul of the security industry. I fail to see how a 21 year old can have the maturity to handle the situations that they are placed in (or cause).

There must also be some sort of psychological screening of candidates for this "job". Too bad if this is too expensive or time consuming, the position they are placed in makes it essential for everyone's sake.

Until then some advice to people in the security industry.

Get a real job instead of hanging around clubs and pubs hoping for trouble like teenagers.

There are other colours besides black.
