Still have al his books , fave story was him and his dad playin a final in Tassie ( i think ).
Both agt the crease and needed like 20 off the last ball , Max's dad hit it to the outfield whee it landed on a SNAKE....no one wanted to pick it up so they jut kept running lol

( May not be 100% true but pisser story )

Awesome television when Maxy did the Adelaide celebrity race at the GP and Brocky etc stiched him up by chucking the car heater on.

Enjoy the holiday Bigfella

Never saw him play and was a bit before my time. Remember his books though, always good for a fathers day present. Was always interesting to hear speak about cricket. And a lot like others who have passed (Tony, Richie), the twelfth man is what I remember most (and it wasn't even him). RIP Mike (I mean Max)

Don't want to derail thread but i dreamed about the Phil Walsh murder too.
Couldn't tell you if it was that night or earlier but i know i did because it was so vivid i could actually remember it in detail.

He's not too much older than my father, so it does make me contemplate his mortality.

By all accounts a fine bowler and a great character.

RIP.

Max's autobiography "Tangles" was the first cricket biography my dad bought for me. When I was playing junior cricket in the early 1980s I was fortunate enough to have Max sign it when he came to Bendigo for a special cricket skills session in 1983. Even when the daylight faded, Max stayed on the oval with us to finish the fielding skills he had begun teaching.

I can vaguely remember seeing footage of a sketch from The Naked Vicar Show where they parodied the famous Aerogard commercial. After the "boy" actor asks the "Max" actor whether anything bothers him, "Max" struggles to do up his zipper, thus prompting the well known response "Batsmen...and flies".

Max had an interesting list of "lasts".

In his last Test he smacked 78 not out off 84 balls against the Poms.
His last one day international was the infamous underarm game versus New Zealand.
In his last first class match, his final victim was Trevor Chappell. This was his only wicket in the game and he retired with a total of 499 wickets.
In his last district cricket game he took 6-76 off 32.3 overs for South Melbourne versus St Kilda.
