A few more disjointed thoughts:

Obviously his post football career transcends what he achieved in the game. Nonetheless, his coaching legacy has aged incredibly well. To make finals more often than not when we were a complete rabble in an administrative sense while big, powerful clubs were really professionalising their back offices is a big achievement. I was still in primary school when he was hired and 21 years old when he was let go - it was a bloody long time and he more or less recast and reinvented the team (and his media persona) multiple times.

Yes, there were times when we were disappointing, there were classic bedshits and we never quite achieved the ultimate in his reign but you never had that sense of utter despair that punctuated the Bailey/Neeld era. He took us from a broken club in 1997 to one that felt we had a chance of winning a flag if we punted him a decade later. You’d take that as a legacy - Essendon were stupid not to hire him at the end of 2007.

Got let down by the club's position and our inability to recruit any good key backs really outside of Bizz or any gun mids. Still that forward line phwoar

Young Redleg this is peak 06 dees/daniher

IIRC, the story with this was the media were talking about we had crumbled in the second half of the season and that Daniher will be sacked all week, and there was a Dees fan telling him he was gone all game in front of the box. Thats why he was so fired up and giving it to everyone on the way down.

If you watch he absolutely gives it some bloke right as he comes out of the box lol if that's true that's a pissa

Oh what I would give to see Davey at his peak. I mostly remember him for the defeated and beaten down player he was under Neeld 😔
Young Davey was so cool to watch, fun story for ya we had him rookied and back then you needed to pay like 40k I think it was to upgrade a player and we couldn't afford it so the supporters fundraised it to get him on the list.

He was the first player I reckon to do the big run down tackles, before he pinged his hammy bad he was like a game within a game coming from behind defenders and running them down.
Basically invented forward pressure. After he pinged his hammy he became a really decent distributor off half back because he was our best kick but his best footy was super early as a small forward

Yeah he won a best and fairest playing at half back.

One good memory I have of Davey is a game against Richmond in 2013 where he turned back the clock kicking 3 goals and getting 20 touches. It was nice to see given that I'd only ever really watched highlight reels of his best footy.

RIP to the great man.

I turned 12 in our 1998 season, maybe it was just that age were you just love footy but for mine it is my favourite season for pure enjoyment. After a poor 3 years following the 1994 prelim and all but merging with the Hawks in tat time, Daners was appointed coach and he brought such a great running and higher scoring ethos to the team, with a great mix of senior players and youth (sound familiar).
