what is this 'internal rivalry' we have with north?

just because north melbourne and essendon are nearby?

they mentioned it on the SFS today?

Back in the old days, when Essendon played at East Melbourne Cricket ground, a team called Essendon A's started in the VFA that played locally. When Essendon moved back to windy hill this team was forced to merge with North Melbourne. You would assume that some of the fans of "the townies" would bear a fair grudge with the VFL team, and that their support would have went towards North, who later joined the VFL.

Also, Sheeds has often said he found it funny that he got the job at Essendon as he was a catholic. Apparently back in the day Essendon = Protestant, North = Catholic.

Oh please lets not go down that route . As a child who grew up in the west coast of Scotland bewildered that people wouldn't play with me cos I went to a school that started with "St" the move to Oz has been wonderful as sectarianism has not roared it's ugly head. So go bombers !!!

essendon being more 'upper class' bigger brother to north melb....the two teams are only located down the road from each other.

Who gives a stuff about North?

I think that is part of the reason for the rivalry. An Essendon supporter just rang SEN saying he's sick of losing to North since the comeback game in 2001. He said that North seems to hate Essendon more than the other way, and that North always looks to the Essendon matches as a big game.

I think that is true - Essendon already has great rivalries with Carlton and Collingwood, and we are a bit irrelevant as a major rival.

And Sheedy was very good at promoting the match ups in the 90s - both Essendon and North were very good teams back then, and Sheeds still feels that had Essendon won either of the close prelims in 96 or 99 they would have beaten us in the GF.

The marshmellow match was a great idea - got a massive crowd, and did wonders for marshmellow sales that week too.

Historically the close geography, and Essendon being one of the teams blocking North's entry into the VFL when North was the dominant team (flags in 1910, and a "threepeat" 1914-1918) led to a bit of a rivalry. That's all totally irrelevant now of course.

It does stem from the VFA and VFL days; both teams located close to one another and fighting the supporter base in the north west suburbs; Essendon blocking North Melbourne to join the VFL.

But that's mainly just water under the bridge now.

More recently, it was the Marshmellow game.

Anyway, North only wished they are as big and successful as the Bombers. The Kangawhos?

I dont know where it has originated but North absolutely hate us internally we are their biggest rivals and they definetely get up for our games no matter how they are travelling, my wife is a passionate North fan so I have watched them alot. The first game of footy we went to was the 2001 game, I am still holding onto that game.

I am never confident when we play NM but on Sunday I was, and even after watching that game I am confident that this year we will finish above NM on the ladder. However it was extremely frustrating to watch a game controlled and played on their terms.

If we throw up another effort like that this week against the pies then Didak, Medhurst, Lockyer and Cloke will rip us to shreds along the wings. The only plus is Collingwood do allow the opposition to use the corridor. I will be very interested to see what tactics are employed this week.

Thats funny, I though North went back to the 1860s (as Hotham).

Didn't realize they are actually a merged entity (with our left-overs, no less :D)
