If Steele had Byrnes's game today, we'd be lauding him

23d (4 contested)
6 marks
10 handballs
1 goal and 6 score assists

There are a fair few others to single out before Ronnie

8 Intercept possesions.
IE they had it, Ronnie got it.

Glad we showed some fight and didn't roll over, but that 3rd quarter was a disaster.

Nas is a superstar. Just get that contract signed whatever it takes.

Steele shouldn't have played. Was clearly still struggling with that knee. Hopefully he's better for the run

Concerned about how Marshall was moving. The lack of a preseason is showing.

Not happy not sad.

Ok as someone else said all about how we respond.

We desperately need another KPF and of kings body isn’t up to it I think it has to be Tauru.

Naz has to be top 20 player in the league imo.

Getting close to top 10 imo.

Some of the stuff he’s doing. That run where he took it from the kick in to the 60 , the moves the goals the confidence.

If he goes three first or Butters.

Anyways, the young guys are developing Espescially the mids. Windy and Garcia stood up. Can’t wait for Garcia to get his fitness up. He often seems to start well but can’t carry it through.

The key for me is that these guys are getting reps on the ball. Even Chito and Naz.

Hall is a jet and will keep his spot , Lance for Henry.

He’ll be better for it.

This is what happans when you have young teams. Giants should’ve played in the granny last year.

What a player Nas is!! Win or lose he is an absolute pleasure to watch. Windy played an excellent game - i said the other week he needs a little bit more license and he had the balance right today. Garcia looked very good he has got such good composure in tight spaces for a young player.

Our defence got slaughtered and JWeb looked off his best, but were playing a young group and we had some bad turnovers. Gws kicked very straight as well. 16 goals 8 with 5 rushed.

Steele looked very average tbh and McCrae was tagged out of it. We got killed in the air too which isn't a surprise.

Outclassed but not embarrassed and we didn't give up

GWS are a quality outfit, so all things considered it was a reasonable effort to fight it out and finish within 4 goals. Looked every bit an 80-100 point hiding mid-way through the third. I know Byrnes is shaky with ball in hand, but he has a crack and one of our better players today. Toby and Lance looked way off the pace. Lance survives as Butler not ready, but Toby might need a spell. In the absence of news to the contrary I’ll assume Henry is ok and was just given another week of conditioning so he is the logical replacement. Webster was the obvious matchup for Green but was just completely outclassed and while Mitch padded out his stats in the last, he was unsighted across the first 3 quarters. Our lack of height was really exposed today and we probably erred in not playing Boyd or Keeler. The Bulldogs are the absolute land of the giants so at least one of them must play next week.

GWS will take some stopping his year. Absolutely star-studded team.

(P.S - pay NAS whatever he wants. Generational talent)

Just good to fight it out when we could have easily gotten destroyed.

Pretty frustrating game but really this was one I never saw us taking. 3-2 is a good result.

Umps in the first half were deplorable. One or two free goals to them and a few missed 50m penalties. Probably should expect that.

Garcia's first half was fantastic. Windy also good. Some of their classier guys were the difference I thought, particularly Greene.

Still plenty of good signs today.

Big game next week.

Too many fumbles, too many turn overs.

Having said that, we won't be the last team that lowers their colours to that mob, they have stars across the field.

They must have changed the rules with ruck contests and defending, Marshall constantly getting held in the ruck, or Briggs blocking his run and letting the ball hitting the deck, and our forwards getting ragdolled as the ball is coming in.

We'd be looking classy too if we were gifted 8000 1st round pics

Byrnes wasn't bad until you realise he was playing on Greene for the most part who kicked 5

People will defend Byrnes on that showing..

But getting the ball isn't enough.

I like his heart and endeavour, but he just isn't up to it.

Our senior players all lowered their colours today.

Though still plenty to like, we've become so much more dependable under Ross
andy samberg thumbs down GIF

Wouldn't have changed the result but we clearly missed that extra tall inside 50 with Keeler out.

Needed Boyd in and RoMa forward or give Barratt a debut. Or just leave Keeler in for another week.

Steele looked under done. Think we rushed him back given the level of opposition. If this was Richmond he probably waits one more week.

They also put plenty of work into Cray and it showed up how quickly our mids drop off.

If Zak Butters really is coming home we should be all.over him. Same with Rowell. Any and every mid that's on the move should be spoken to TBH.

I know the Giants have had plenty of gifts over the journey but our lack of midfield talent is still our biggest weakness against top teams.

Ross’s press conference interesting. He reckons there was a lot to like. There has to be an acknowledgement that GWS is a way more settled and accomplished side than us. We have a way to go obviously, but there are things to like for sure.

Our game style was good when we had ascendancy. Great start to the game. Couple of errors and an umpires call going the wrong way and we would have been leading handily.

Ross rattled off that many numbers it was hard to keep up. But in the main we were ok. They took their chances with class and ruthlessness. We didn’t finish off our work. Lack of the right cattle hurt. We still need key position help at either end. And a bit more class and grunt in the middle. Work in progress.

Really pleased with Hugo, Windy, Hall in particular. NAS in another class. If Pou can get into that arena we look a lot better.

Anyway, we move on. Now a few weeks at home.

Whatever they’re paying the GWS trainers we need to double it. They all look like Olympic athletes. Bigger, stronger, faster, how they haven’t won a flag yet is beyond me.
They were literally, 'Giants'..Brown etc., just bigger than their counterparts.

Ok so stood/bbqed in the northern GWS end in the pocket.
General observation: we were a class below. Skills? Hand balling to you team mates ankles will never cut it - thanks Hammer.
Forward set up was poor. Love Mitchi but if we are hoping he’s more than a 3rd tall and crumber then prepare to be disappointed. That aside our entries were atrocious. They set up with 3 key tall/interceptors and we just bombed blindly . Coops tried but he rarely led into space with the exception of the first quarter.
The old blokes were mia. Steele looked rusty, Cray was tagged out of the game. Jones - the less said the better. He’s not the answer. Hill is/was ordinary. Not his day.
Mace Wood marked well and loved his effort (apart from the howler in front of goal).
Nas and Hugo take a bow they saved us from what could have been a massacre.

Tobin T looked like a rookie - easily bundled out of it.

Interestingly the moves in the last brought us back.
Windy to hbf
Mitch to the midfield (not ruck)
NAS to the wing

Overall some good but a sh#t load of work to do.

Thanks V - really interesting- first time I’ve really heard RTB outline the future plan - NAS into the midfield when he gets stronger and the right time in the game plus Wilson a mid. Expect NAS to get more mid time now.

Add in Garcia, Windy & Pou (& hopefully Boxshall) - that’s our future midfield right there.

Marvel stadium will suit the Saints better. I feel a lot more confident for the next couple of weeks and games like today, although it was a reality check, still offer a great learning and teaching tool for the young squad.

Next Sunday night should be a ripper of a match against the dogs. Good to be actually looking forward to footy unlike for large parts of last season.

Agree
Those last quarter changes were fruitful in the context of the game, but probably not a sustainable plan. ???
Mitchi was gettin' done up forward, so i was kind of bummed at first to see him again, as our reserve ruck at the Centre- bounces. Marshall just 70% time on ground. Wanna think we have better reserve ruckman, but we evidently don't.
Anyway, the boys fought it out. And Cray, yep, he was very quite, made quite, at no apparent cost to them.

I think we got a glimpse of the real side today. Few pundits had GWS as top 4, but they are so superior in power. Luck wasn't on our side either. God save the King.
