Geoff Walsh just briefly appeared on SEN this morning stating that Rocca has broken down again after the VFL game on the weekend.

No time frame was given on his return but it's not looking good for him. I have always been a big fan of Ant but I can't see any obvious spots in the team for him to fill if and when he finally does return from injury.

At the time I was happy for him to stay on the list in season 2009. We had room on the list to carry him and it was a "free swing" - if he came good, great, if not we had plenty of other options. Leigh Brown was drafted as insurance and we have collected on that policy. Win some, lose some, we didnt get Rocca back but on the other hand Presti (who had an equally cloudy future this time last year) is looking like he'll get picked in the AA side.

Also happy for him to keep punching away for the rest of this year to get himself right. But if he's out for another 2-3 weeks and needs a minimum 4 VFL games before even being considered, the odds arent good for him to return to the side, especially if the seniors stay injury free and keep winning.

This is probably his last chance.

He'll be out for three weeks, before he tries again in the VFL.

Forget rocca, for now i think they are planning one last ditch effort to have him ready just before the finals.
If he works out great, if not he'll be in the states next year, trying out for the American grid iron league with his brother.

his finshed will never play for collingwood again thank god

He's a club legend and if he can get fit by the end of the year could be the difference between making up the numbers or being a contender

Yes Rocca is a club legend and genearlly has given us good service throughout his career, but the only thing i have not forgiven him for was when he got reported in the prelim in 03 and that cost us the flag, beacuse we were forced to change our entire team structure, and we were beaten by a battered and bruised brisbane side who were ripe for the taking,Rocca i am now convinced would have been the diffrence that year.

That i cannot forgive.

I'm a bit puzzled: I thought he got re-injured before the VFL game on the weekend, hence he didn't play at all, yet Walsh's comments suggest he got hurt during the game. It doesn't make any difference I suppose, but I would like this clarified.

Rocca deserves the utmost respect having given his all for our club.

It pisses me off to hear people taking pot shots at single events.
Rocca won't be asking anyone's forgiveness on this forum.:mad:
Rocca is a champ and if this injury finishes his career it is a bloody shame.

As he will no doubt retire soon enough, will Heater inherit his number 23 in honour of his Dad Ray?

Not a big believer in inheriting numbers, would rather be indentifed for my own deeds and forge my own destiny.

Rocca didnt cost us that 2003 flag, it didnt help, but he wasn't the 7 goals difference in the end, the attitude was the difference.

I wonder if Heater would like it though?

On the subject...I recently saw an interview with Nick Maxwell where he was asked how he felt about getting Buck's number 5.
He said he did not want it at first as he felt he could never live up to it. Bucks had to convince him why he should have it and why he, Bucks, had asked that Maxwell get it.
Very interesting bloke Maxwell.
Just thought I'd add that.

Very sad news, Rocca has always been a favourite of mine. I've defended him in the face of unrelenting criticism from some of my friends.
But, let's be honest now, IF we make it deep into September, and IF Rocca gets his body right and develops some match fitness in the 2's, would you really want him brought back into the side? Won't we have gotten to where we are based on the strength of the team on the park? I think it would be mighty unfair to whomever would be dropped, and the unkown quantity as far as knowing and playing with your teammates for the whole year, upsetting that structure, I don't think we could risk it.

If it was to cover for a major injury, of course you would have to look at him, but that is really the only case under which I would want Rocca back in the side.

Figers crossed he gets himself right before that, and has a chance to prove himself again, before we are competing in a knockout finals game.

It is shades of Buckley 2007.

Pebbles strength was never his speed. He may be getting long in the tooth however he hasn't started shrinking yet and his pure size and strength will always be hard to stop.

Imagine the forward line we used against Fremantle with Cloke, Jack, Medhurst, Dick and Dawes. Now replace Dawes with Rocca and use Cloke more at CHF where I think is where he plays his best. Davis would come back in however should play mostly in the midfield with Didak anyway. Thomas should play on the half back flank.

And lastly, Pebbles is a loved member of the team. Like Buckley in 07, the players will want to send him off like Crawford with the highest accolade.

All I am saying is that IF Rocca can get fit (the last game he played in the AFL he still clearly wasn't fit) and can prove himself at VFL then I see him as a secret weapon come September. And he deserves to be that weapon.

lol
Cloke just played his only good game for the year.
They would be nuts to tell him to do anything different next week/the week after/ever again.

Well luckily for us I don't think Rocca will be back in the AFL side this week;)

Cloke played well against Fremantle however I still don't think he is back to his best.

It seems to me that his form slump has to do with confidence so lets just assume that between now and September he can regain some confidence and that we can take him out of cotton wool.

I'm just trying to put out some scenarios where Rocca would be a positive

I dont think MM will be that sentimental if it came down to a game we had to win to snatch 4th spot or the best ladder position possible. If Rocca wasnt in the best 22, then I wouldnt play him. So far this year, he hasnt shown he is best 22. Its been nearly 40 games since he has given the club what he is paid a lot to do. In the end, you have to weigh all that up.

It might be harsh, but thats AFL footy now, harsh.

I agree with this. If he can't prove he is in our best 22 then he shouldn't come back in for sentimental reasons.

If he can get his body right, gain some fitness and gametime in the VFL though, I think he would still be in our best 22. The odds are against him though.

One of the most pathetic comments i have read on here

Even if he is finished he has a been a club stalwart over the years and has given his best for the pies

I seriously doubt that you are even a Collingwood supporter

FuManchu - I 100% agree. c'mon guys think with the head and not the heart. I would hate to think that we would try and slip Rocca into the curent side just before finals because of what he has done in the past or MAY do again (although doubtful). If he isn't in the best 22 he isn't in the best 22 - geez just this week we were saying Medhurst was struggling to push in and may again this week. No more sentimentality - doesn't matter who you are, what you have done a long time ago or how much longer you have to play - if you don't get a spot because the rest of the team are better then that's a fact. We can't reward somebody for their history - excluding current playing form obviously.

No player should get in the side who is not up to it. Pebs would have to have at least one good hitout at AFL level before he was even considered for a final.
That said the coaching staff will make the decision. I can't see MM choosing out of sentiment.
And yet we constantly get calls for this or that VFL player to get a run because they "deserve it" usually based on a personal like for the player.

It should be bloody hard to break into a winning side.

some people forget how good rocca was and what he has done for the pies
i for one hope he gets a send off game if this is his last year (which looks very likely) because he deserves it

I agree :thumbsu: He deserves it. Don't put him down because he is injured, he was a great player for us.
Good luck Ant, join Sav in the NFL

IMO its good, we don't need a old & slow tall taking up room.
Keep him out of the side until we need him, at seasons end cut him loose and move on.

IMO if you haven't played say 20 games in 3 years you need to be let go.
