Lonie is playing reserves albeit averagely.

Both rocca and rusling are technically chances to play again this season (in finals), but both would be major long shots. Especially rusling who has played half a game since pre season, rocca could maybe play 1st or 2nd week of finals but that is a major gamble too

I was wondering just the other day about Rusling's availability.

When he was operated on the club seemed to write off his year and I haven't heard anything to the contrary - or anything at all for that matter - since, but is there a chance he could sneak back for the finals as he did last year?

Did you go to the game last week? Or are you just commenting on a personal belief from what biased others have seen?

You would be surprised how close lonie is to selection. I reckon he maybe an emergency on the weekend.

He and Dawes were by far our best last weekend.

Rusling has 0% chance of playing this year (heard an interview with the club doctor and he said that if there was a chance of returning Rus would've immediately had the surgery, however it was assessed that he wouldn't have a chance so he went on a holiday overseas for a few weeks prior to having the surgery. Rocca on the other hand does have a chance of returning, thats if all goes to plan.

Saw Lonie on CTV. I think it said he was a No 1 draft pick in 2001. If so, what happened? Has his career foundered because of injury?

Nah he was our best first year player in 2001. He was at his best throughout 02,03. Especially in the 02 final series. He had a lul over 04,05 which most of our players did. 05 was mostly due to injury.

In 2006 Lonie was used as a defender and had some really good games. He smashed Adam Goodes and Daniel Wells.

In 2007 he again was belting Wells in round 1 before he copped a huge hit to the head from Sinclair. He then suffered from OP throughout last year.

He is the sort of player that if he can regain his best form he will be in our best 22. But we haven't seen that form since 2006, however there were signs last week in the reserves that he was finding some touch.

I know he is hated by so many on here, but i reckon at 25 he still has a lot to offer this footy club.

Lonie was selected at no. 34 in the 2000 draft. In the same draft we picked up Didak (pick 3 - priority), Jason Cloke (pick 19 - father/son), Guy Richards (37) and Wakes (49).

lonie used to be a good fast wingman type, who was a lovely long kick, but there is a perception that he lacks the courage needed to tackle hard and bust packs. Might have been scarred from 2003 GF, and also the Lions players back then facetiously nominating him as "the toughest player in the AFL".

He doesn't seem to kick the ball long any more - maybe the impact of OP?

every report ive read lonie has been considered average9in fact harsher words have been used)

The games i went to myself lonie was poor, who doesnt use his greatest weapon anymore whether by injury or choice he doesnt kick long. If he gets it back he will back in the senioors otherwise not.

Please dont lecture me on bias agianst players, it annoys me the way supporters attack individual players (which i didnt do i said average not shit not shit average)

its a shame lonie hasnt had many chances in the last two years as he was one of my favs when he was up and going injury free. soft tag or not, his run and long penetraiting kicking is something a lot of players dont have.

i remember goin to a queens bday one year, one we actually won lol. lonie ran from half back through the middle to kick a long bomb from 50 metres out, was an awesome goal.

as someone pointed out he is still 25, people are calling to delist him. i think its a better bet to keep him for some depth and put pressure on the younger guys for a spot.

He had up around if not over 30 possies on the weekend and if he was average the rest of the team must've been "shit". Average is when you are about the 10th-16th best player on the ground. Lonie was easily in our top two.

But Lonie gets nearly all of his possessions from dinky little handball receives across the half back line then does his own little sideways dinky kick to someone else. He has no impact on the game.

He is also one of the softest players to ever pull on the black and white jumper.

Lets be serious for a moment...Without our black and white glasses!

Are we really a chance to win the flag without Ant?????

Look, i would love to think so but i sincerley doubt it...

Geelong did it with Mooney.

We have a better player in Trav and a more potent forward line than the Cats had.

What we don't have is their midfield - where flags are won. Should have spent more time developing what we had there.

Pure dribble. The guy has hardly been on the park for 2 seasons and has played some outstanding footy in the "black and white".

Let's just write him off though because we have the silky footskills of Johnson and Maxwell to rely on. Kicking is overated anyway, who needs players who can actually kick the ball?

I'm glad some people here recognise Lonie isn't as big a reject as percieved. i've been afraid to bring up his name because of the regular bashings he recieved when i did.
having said that unfortunately i don't think he will get another chance in the collingwood seniors. i would love to be wrong though!

Agree. Lonie was very good on his day and I hope he can recover to play again. You just knew when ever he got the ball on the wing he was going to do something with it. Usually a good pass into 50 but quite often a beautiful goal from outside 50.
He is roundly maligned for being an "outside" player but I would rather see anyone on the wing on their own than under pressure...
Some players are lauded for being able to get out on their own...not Lonie apparently, probably suffers a bit from serial attack from serial knockers.

The good thing i remember about Lonie was back in 02 when the flood was in vogue and during that finals series he was brilliant as he used his left foot to great effect to become the Floodbuster as his kicking back then would go over the top of a cluster of defenders who would plant themselves across the half back line, if only he could recapture that form.

Get this dribble --> I was talking about recent times, in particular his performances in the VFL of which I have seen in person. How many games of VFL have you watched this year?

I might also point out that he hasn't had penetration in his kicking for several years. He is also a poor decision maker with the ball. He doesn't hit targets in dangerous positions and he doesn't kick as many goals as people on here seem to "imagine".

Even in his prime he never kicked that many. It's a myth in these parts.

Well call security at the Lexus Center and tell them to grab Ryan Lonie by the back of the pants and throw him out onto swan st because his playing days are over, he should just give up now, because he can't play footy and never could according to your good self.

Let's just write off a bloke at 25 years of age while we make excuses for 19 year old kids, who just need more time to develop, to get used to the game and other soft rubbish. What was Ryan Lonie doing when he was 19? Did people make excuses for him?

Great observation that he hasn't had penetration in his kicking for several years given that he made his debut in 2001. And don't look at how many goals he has kicked, look at how many behinds he has kicked, the guy is a defender.

Anyway good luck to Ryan Lonie I hope he comes back to senior footy, and shows a whole heap of brain dead parrots the type of footy he can play when he is 100%
