I've done three phantom drafts previously that have been met with very positive feedback. I will admit that this year was a lot harder so I'm not all that confident about it but here goes...
It is without a doubt that Whitfield is the most elite midfielder in this year’s draft pool. His endurance is second to none. He just runs all day and runs his opponents into the ground, not to mention that he has a perfect left foot, very dangerous around goals and just simply looks composed whenever he has the ball.
#2 GWS: Jimmy Toumpas (Woodville-West Torrens) Height: 183cm Weight: 77kg D.O.B: 02/01/94
By having a dominant final series last year helping WWT to a flag, Toumpas announced himself as a future star. A versatile midfielder, Toumpas has excellent skills and is efficient both by hand and by foot who also has a combination of explosive speed and agility. I cannot see him dropping out of the top 3 come draft time, especially considering he made All-Australian despite playing with injury.
#3 GWS: Brodie Grundy (Sturt) Height: 202cm Weight: 100kg D.O.B: 15/04/94
Grundy is by far the best ruckman in this draft, and the best junior ruckman since Naitanui. He is a dual U18 All-Australian who possesses elite tap work and virtually becomes another midfielder when the ball hits the ground, not to mention his mobility. I would say he will be the next Dean Cox.
#4 Melbourne: Oliver Wines (Bendigo Pioneers) Height: 185cm Weight: 83kg D.O.B: 07/10/94
It seems that Wines would be a very good fit for Melbourne. A top 10 pick, Wines is a big-bodied inside midfielder who excels at the clearances and will also rack up touches having averaged 24 touches in the TAC Cup.
#5 Western Bulldogs: Jackson Macrae (Oakleigh Chargers) Height: 188cm Weight: 75kg D.O.B: 03/08/94
Macrae’s blistering finish to the year has seen his stocks rise massively and is in line at around this pick. He has all the traits of an elite midfielder full of class. He wins plenty of the ball, his kicking is pinpoint and precise, and his agility and evasiveness is superb. The Dogs would no doubt love to add a potential elite AFL midfielder to their side and Macrae is very capable of becoming one.
#6 Western Bulldogs: Jake Stringer (Bendigo Pioneers) Height: 191cm Weight: 91kg D.O.B: 25/04/94
Despite a leg injury, Stringer is still a top 10, even a top 5 pick due to returning to some great form. To me he looks to be the perfect utility as he can change a game both as a bid-bodied midfielder or as a forward with his strong overhead marking. When he gets his running ability back, he should also be able to slot in defence at times and be used as an outside midfielder. KPF aside, he is what the Dogs need.
#7 Port Adelaide: Sam Mayes (North Adelaide) Height: 187cm Weight: 78kg D.O.B: 20/05/94
Despite playing primarily across half-forward in the champs, he was pushed further up the ground in his senior stints with the Roosters. His probably has the best foot skills in this year’s draft pool and he also has fantastic endurance and leg speed. Mayes should slot straight into the Port's young midfield.
#8 Brisbane: Kristian Jaksch (Oakleigh Chargers) Height: 194cm Weight: 85kg D.O.B: 07/10/94
With Brown nearing the end, the Lions will be looking at developing a key forward and Jaksch is probably the best KPP in this year’s pool behind Daniher. He is capable at playing at both ends of the ground and possesses strong hands and excellent field kicking. He also played a pivotal role in Oakleigh’s charge towards the flag (pun intended) by keeping Daniher quiet one week and kicking four goals the next. His set shots are a bit iffy at times but Brown would be a very ideal mentor. He would also free up Merrett to play in defence.
#9 Richmond: Nick Vlastuin (Northern Knights) Height: 187cm Weight 83kg D.O.B: 19/04/94
The Tigers have a terrific young midfield as it is and Vlastuin would be the icing on the cake. He is a highly competitive inside mid who has a ferocious attack on the ball and has elite decision making. He can also play across half-back as he did for much of the championships.
#10 Essendon: Joe Daniher (Calder Cannons) Height: 201cm Weight: 89kg D.O.B: 04/03/94 (F/S)
As we know, the Bombers have committed to him under the F/S rule and they certainly have a steal here. Elite young KPF’s only come around once every blue moon so to get a top three talent at #10 is a huge bargain. His contested marking is second to none and should become an elite CHF in the years to come.
#11 Carlton: Jonathan O’Rourke (Calder Cannons) Height: 183cm Weight: 75kg D.O.B: 21/04/94
The Blues have stocked up on young KPP’s over the last few years and with the likes of Judd and Carrazzo getting on in age, it’s about time they targeted some young mids. He performed well in the champs coming back from injury but at AFL level his position is unknown. He is very explosive and has elite kicking skills so he could be mouled into a Brett Deledio type that can dominate across half-back and the midfield (if he adds some size). As we know, Malthouse is a great developer so O’Rourke could very well turn out to be a gun mid/HB. I was tempted to go for Plowman at this pick but the Blues have drafted Watson and McCarthy as KPD’s who are still developing.
#12 GWS: Lachlan Plowman (Calder Cannons) Height: 191cm Weight: 86kg D.O.B: 11/11/94
With the loss of Hombsch, the Giants would love to land a quality young KPD. He may not have the height to play as one straight away but he’s very capable of developing into one and becoming a Scarlett type FB who isn’t all that tall but has incredible strength and rebounding ability. I understand he has been linked to pick #3 but I just don’t think he’s quite a top 3 pick.
#13 Gold Coast: Jesse Lonergan (Launceston) Height: 183cm Weight: 86kg D.O.B: 14/04/94
Lonergan is by far the best division two prospect in this year’s pool. To me, he is the complete midfielder who is big-bodied and tough and does superbly as an inside midfielder, but he has the speed and endurance to play as an outside midfielder. On top of that, he is also a proven goal kicker when needed.
#14 GWS: Troy Menzel (Central District) Height: 186cm Weight: 77kg D.O.B: 22/09/94
Menzel was considered a top 5 pick at the start of the year but his knee injury will probably cause him to slide a little. Adding to that, he has also undergone LARS which is very risky. However, I think the Giants will be willing to take a punt on him and pick him up here. There is a reason he was originally touted as a potential top 5 pick. Much like his brother, he is very creative, provides lots of flair, kicks plenty of goals and can have stints in the midfield.
#15 North Melbourne: Ben Kennedy (Glenelg) Height: 174cm Weight: 76kg D.O.B: 03/03/94
With a plethora of inside mids, North would be looking at some more outside options and Kennedy fits the bill perfectly. He has the ability to win plenty of the ball, he has a beautiful left foot kick and has plenty of speed and is a goal-kicker. He is a Boomer Harvey clone so he will straight away take his spot once he retires, but as for next year, he will probably play more as a forward pocket type.
#16 Geelong: Taylor Garner (Dandenong Stingrays) Height: 186cm Weight: 77kg D.O.B: 08/01/94
A versatile forward/midfielder, Garner has sprung into first round contention with an impressive champs, especially his performance against WA. He has an incredible strong overhead mark for his size, he’s a goalkicker and can dominate in the midfield given his versatility. He is very strong in contested situations and is a strong tackler and has been likened to Bartel because of his strong overhead and contested ball winning qualities.
#17 Fremantle: Mason Shaw (South Fremantle) Height: 197cm Weight: 82kg D.O.B: 15/01/94
Shaw is the best available KPF at this pick IMO. He didn’t have a fantastic champs competing with Hogan but his Colts form is too good to ignore. He kicked over 100 goals this year and just simply has such a presence up forward with strong marking and accurate goal kicking. He would be the perfect successor for Pavlich and there is no go-home factor involved.
#18 Collingwood: Tom Clurey (Murray Bushrangers) Height: 193cm Weight: 85kg D.O.B: 23/03/94
One of the best KPD’s in the draft, Clurey would be an excellent addition to most teams. He has elite endurance and also provides rebound from defence as well as doing outstanding shut down jobs on power forwards.
#19 Collingwood: Tim Membrey (Gippsland Power) Height: 188cm Weight: 87kg D.O.B: 26/06/94
Membrey is a big-bodied versatile forward who is very physical due to his crash-bash style of play into packs and has an excellent work rate. He won’t be a KPF at AFL level but he would make an excellent third-tall with his strong marking on lead and accurate goal-kicking. Adding to that, he could play as a midfielder with some endurance. He has been linked to Collingwood so I think they will be very happy to snare him.
#20 Adelaide: Josh Simpson (East Fremantle) Height: 183cm Weight: 72kg D.O.B: 09/02/94
After transferring from SA at the start of the year, Simpson has continued his great form possessing elite kicking skills and a penetrating kick on top of his pace. He will be a great addition to Adelaide's midfield. With Kennedy gone, the Crows would love to land some outside pace and Simpson fits the bill perfectly. O’Brien is the popular choice here but I really think a Daniel Wells-esque midfielder is an area they are deficient in.
#21 Collingwood: Dayle Garlett (Swan Districts) Height: 180cm Weight: 75kg D.O.B: 09/01/94
After being initially touted as a top 10 pick, a few off-field issues has probably scared a few recruiters off but I think Collingwood would be a club willing to take a punt. He is an elite talent after all as he possesses blistering pace, good decision making and is also a very adequate goal sneak. If his off-field issues can be fixed, the Pies would have themselves a gun.
#22 Western Bulldogs: Tim O’Brien (Glenelg) Height: 192cm Weight: 81kg D.O.B: 28/03/94
O’Brien is a very athletic KPF who possesses very strong hands overhead and on the lead, he is quick and is an accurate set shot. The Dogs severely lack KPF quality and depth, and O’Brien will fill that hole perfectly.
#23 Sydney: Sam Colquhon (Central District) Height: 179cm Weight: 72kg D.O.B: 20/12/94
Colquhon is a half-back flanker who has elite skills. His kicking is very precise, he has great efficiency with his disposals and has incredible endurance. With Shaw and Mattner both nearing the end, Colquhon would slot in at half-back as their successor with utter ease.
Wright is an athletic defender who can push up into the midfield. He has explosive speed that enables him to burst away from opponents and also has the ability to play shutdown roles on small/medium forwards which is another one of his assets. Should go around at this pick and will be a quality addition to the young Lions squad.
