YOU should not be surprised exciting teenager Isiah Farrell-Nelson dominated a big footy final in the Territory.

He did so for Nightcliff against Darwin on Saturday evening, kicking four of the Tigers 13 goals and dancing his way around the Buffaloes defenders on a number of occasions to dazzle the boisterous TIO Stadium.

He also did it 989km’s down the Stuart Highway for the Janapurlalki Eagles in the Barkly Australian Football League post-season only months ago.

Yes, the NTFL is a sizeable step-up in standard of play and professionalism from the BAFL in Tennant Creek but the kid they call “Lil Jay” has taken to it like a duck to water.

In his five games in Nightcliff colours this season, he has booted 17 goals, including a bag of six, four against Buffaloes on Saturday in the elimination final as well as two games of three.

‘Lil Jay’ took all before him in the Barkly the season just gone, taking out the Patrons Medal for the best and fairest player in the competition as well as finished second in the leading goal-kicker race.

‘Lil Jay’ finished on 17 votes and won by two votes from Kendrick Albert from the Elliott Hawks.

Just wonderful watching the joy football brings.
Nice skills too

A little confused. Is he ours or can another club take him?

Can we match a rookie bid?
Posted this elsewhere after the draft in regards to Farrell-Nelson. We can also sign an AFL nominated player or one not signed by his indigenous club.

The club will need to lodge relevant paperwork immediately after the rookie draft on November 28 to secure the multicultural or indigenous talent.

If the relevant club does not choose to take the player as a category B rookie, or if they are an AFL nomination and are not selected in the rookie or national drafts, then any club can list the player as a category B pick.

However, the player has to give his consent before it is confirmed in that case.

Other clubs can take him in rookie Draft. No bid matching.
If he remains undrafted, then we can list him as Cat B rookie.

So if no club (including ours) thinks he is worthy of being on their list through the AFL Draft AND the Rookie Draft, then we can pick him up at Cat B. Sounds like a steal.

Assume many of these future academy players are deemed high risk (of success) by recruiters, hence under normal circumstances, clubs may pass...not willing to place on main list (they have other/better/safer options, in their eyes).
Therefore the AFL is trying to find a way to encourage clubs to roll the dice on these kids.
The ability to place them on Cat B is the method.
They are off the main list, not included in TPP, one year contracts.
They are not 'taking the spot' of another main list potential player.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Why not?

is this the same situation as Kirby for the Tiges (except we took him)?

I doubt he will be selected tomorrow.
Doesn't appear to on anyone's radar.
Hence we can take him as Cat B after the draft.
The only point I'm not clear on...if he isn't drafted tomorrow, then are we 100% committed to drafting him as Cat B or could we still decide to pass?
The fact that we have nominated him, leads me to believe we have to take him??

Although Richmond nominated 5 players (3 were drafted on Friday).
If the 5 players were not drafted, then they would only have room for 3 Cat B rookies.
Hence couldn't fit all 5 into their list.
Time will tell.

He's a low risk/high reward pick. I saw him earlier in the year for NT against Oakleigh and his highlight reel is big. Very inconsistent, but he has all the tricks. Not going cost us anything other than a Cat B spot, if he becomes anything then we've found a bargain.
